WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Santonio Holmes on PUP list
Updated: July 24, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

ESPN New York's Rich Cimini details the latest on Santonio Holmes' recovery from his surgically repaired foot.Tags: Santonio Holmes, Rich Cimini

As expected, the New York Jets will open training camp Thursday without wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who was placed on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday.

Holmes, who underwent foot surgery in October after a severe Lisfranc injury, can be removed from the PUP list as soon as he's medically cleared to practice. But that might take some time.

The Jets' top playmaker indicated Saturday that he still isn't running at full speed on the field. He's running on a gravity-assisted treadmill without full weight on his foot.

Nevertheless, Holmes remains hopeful that he will be ready for the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"[We] definitely have to take our time, and I'll be ready to go when the bell rings," he said.

NY Jets WR Santonio Holmes remains noncommittal about whether he'll play this season

jets-practice-mini-camp.jpg

Holmes, 29, is clearly the Jets? best offensive threat when healthy, a catch-and-run weapon seemingly tailor-made for Marty Mornhinweg?s West Coast offense. General manager John Idzik?s decision to sign Braylon Edwards on the eve of camp strengthens the notion that Holmes won?t be back anytime soon.

CORTLAND ? Tone Time is working on island time for a team that desperately needs as much offensive help as it can get right now.

Shortly after the Jets? first training camp practice on Friday, Santonio Holmes was noncommittal about whether he?ll be ready to play this season. Rex Ryan repeatedly said this spring that the goal was to prepare Holmes, who is rehabbing from a severe Lisfranc foot injury, for the Sept. 8 opener against the Buccaneers.

That appears to be a pipe dream now.

Holmes may be one of the most peculiar human beings I?ve ever met, but his talent is undeniable, and a prolonged absence will be too much to overcome for the talent-starved Jets.

Ryan desperately needs him back to have some semblance of offensive firepower.

Holmes maintained in Holmesian fashion that he wasn?t frustrated by the lengthy rehab and has resigned himself to taking orders from his most important body part.

?I have to do what the foot says to do,? Holmes said. ?If it?s not ready to roll, it?s not ready to roll.?

There is still no timetable for the Santonio Holmes? return to the field, Ryan said today.

After suffering a Lisfranc injury to his left foot during a game in Week 4 last season, Holmes has had two surgeries. He is rehabbing the injury during training camp and is on the physically unable to perform list. Holmes can be activated once cleared by trainers.

Ryan said it would be premature to rule Holmes out for Week 1 of the regular season. Holmes has been running and Ryan said he is in ?great shape,? but that the Jets trainers will decide his return.

?I just think from a mental standpoint and a conditioning standpoint he?s gonna be ready to play,? Ryan said. ?Whenever the trainers say he?s ready to play that?s a different story. That is not predetermined right now.?

Future is cloudy for Holmes
August, 5, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Jets open the season in 34 days and Santonio Holmes still isn't close to practicing. The chances of him being ready for Week 1 are fading by the day, although the organization still is clinging to faint hope.

On Monday, Rex Ryan was non-committal on Holmes' anticipated return date.

"That's something we'll just leave it up to the trainers," Ryan said. "The trainers feel good about where he's at. They haven?t given me a timetable or anything on Santonio."

Ryan wouldn't rule out Holmes for the opener, but he added, "I think we'll just let it play out." He commended Holmes on his conditioning, noting that the veteran receiver has resumed running. But Ryan wouldn't say if Holmes is running full speed. If he is, it's out of sight from the media.

Holmes suffered a severe LisFranc foot injury last September, requiring surgery and a follow-up procedure to remove surgical screws from his foot. A week ago, Holmes declined to speculate on his return date. Stephen Hill and Clyde Gates have been practicing with the first team, with Jeremy Kerley in the slot.

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/24960/future-is-cloudy-for-holmes

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on NFL Insiders that the Jets are optimistic Santonio Holmes (foot) will not miss the first four games of the season, as Holmes had allegedly told people around him.
"The feeling is he will be back closer to the start of the season than missing four games," Schefter reported. Holmes has finally resumed running, and coach Rex Ryan is now saying he's "confident" the Jets' mercurial No. 1 wideout will be ready for the season opener. Holmes remains a dicey fantasy pick, even in the late rounds of drafts due to the Jets' weak quarterback situation. Aug 6

The mystery of Tone
August, 11, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A mid-summer's look at the Jets:

1. Tone deaf: If you're betting on Santonio Holmes' return, the smart money says he will miss the entire preseason as he continues to rehab his surgically repaired foot. So when will he come back? Holmes is such a mercurial personality that people close to the organization don't know what to believe. Is his Lisfranc injury still healing or is he milking the injury to protect his self interests? Holmes, with a $10.75 million cap number in 2014, knows he will be released after the season. That makes this a contract year for him.

If he re-injures his foot, he'll be damaged goods next offseason or, worse, could be forced to retire. So you can bet he'll take his sweet time, hoping to maximize his value. Some people say they wouldn't be shocked to see him in October at the earliest. The minority opinion is that he's dragging it out to avoid training camp, and that he'll crank it up in a couple of weeks to get ready for the season opener. With him, you never know. The Jets are saying all the right things about Holmes' dedication to rehab, but this will become a vexing issue for the team. The other day, he looked like an old man as he walked across the practice field, seemingly playing to the crowd as fans implored him to get well soon.

NY Jets hopeful Santonio Holmes' foot will respond by Week 1
Holmes? impending return will provide more than simply a jolt to a Jets offense that looked out of sorts at practice on Monday. Tone Time can?t come at a better time for general manager John Idzik and the rest of the board of trustees at Geno, Inc.

Santonio Holmes begins running routes in hopes to be ready by start of season.

Santonio Holmes? foot delivered the news to Santonio Holmes at some point in the recent past, which surely made Santonio Holmes happy.

Three weeks ago, the Jets? mercurial wide receiver admitted that he was under strict orders to listen to his wounded limb.

?I have to do what the foot says to do,? Holmes said at the start of training camp. ?If it?s not ready to roll, it?s not ready to roll.?

Hard to argue.

Nearly a month after his foot waffled, it finally gave Holmes the green light to run around before the Jets? second preseason game on Saturday night. Holmes appeared sharp running routes at three-quarters speed and catching passes from fellow dinged-up teammate Geno Smith.

?Tone is very anxious,? wide receiver Stephen Hill said. ?He?s definitely ready to come back. You can tell . . . Everything I hear from him, everything he talks to me about is, ?Hey, I want to get back on the field.? That?s all he wants.?

Jets receiver Santonio Holmes still feels pain in foot every morning, isn't sure when he'll return
By Darryl Slater/The Star-Ledger
August 21, 2013

Every morning when Santonio Holmes wakes up, he feels the pain in his left foot ? a reminder of the work that remains before he can play football again. No matter what Holmes has done to rehabilitate the Lisfranc (mid-foot) fracture he suffered Sept. 30 against San Francisco, he has yet to experience a pain-free morning since.

?It still feels the same,? he said. ?I think it?s something that I have to learn to tolerate at this point, because the injury itself is going to be a tough one to overcome. And mentally, it?s definitely a big challenge.?

Not until Holmes walks in the morning does the pain dissipate. He still does not know when he will step on the field again for practice or a game. He just knows he cannot expect the aching in his foot to completely disappear at any point soon, as he prepares to ?relearn? all the physical movements required of an elite wide receiver.

Holmes is the Jets? best receiver, a valuable asset to an offense that desperately needs them. He said he feels excited that football season is approaching. But uncertainty abounds about when ? or if ? he will participate, for what very well could be his final season with the Jets, in the third year of a five-year, $45 million contract.

Holmes, who is dealing with a serious injury for the first time in his eight-year NFL career, expressed tempered optimism Wednesday about his chances of playing in 2013.

He said it?s ?not really? looking more and more unlikely that he will be ready for the Sept. 8 opener against Tampa Bay and former Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis.
But Holmes said during training camp in Cortland, N.Y., that he couldn?t say whether he?d even be able to play at all this season. And he said Wednesday that still holds true.

?Up until this point, I don?t know,? he said. ?At any point, I could be ready to play. And if not, I?ll be willing to accept it.?

Santonio Holmes cleared but won't practice for Jets?
By Gregg Rosenthal
Around The League Editor
Published: Aug. 22, 2013

Santonio Holmes has been medically cleared by a foot specialist to begin football activities, according to a report by the New York Post. But Holmes refuses to practice.

Brian Costello reported that many people around the New York Jets believe the wide receiver is just trying to avoid training camp and is healthier than he's letting on. Holmes said Wednesday he can't run routes and still feels pain in his foot every morning.

"I can't pinpoint a day when it will feel better because every day has been the same up until this point," Holmes said. "I feel good some days. I don't the others. This pain won't go away."

The Jets publicly have said that Holmes has not been medically cleared. The team is likely to double down on that approach after Costello's report in order to minimize the drama around Holmes. But there's a real concern within the team, according to Costello, that this is only the beginning.

"There is a theory around the Jets that Holmes will suddenly pronounce himself ready to play when the regular season arrives in two weeks and training camp is through," Costello wrote. "Holmes also missed most of last year's training camp with what was listed as 'general body soreness' and then a rib injury.

"Others inside the Jets think Holmes could wait to see how the team starts the season before deciding when to play. If the team is losing, he may wait a while. If things are going well, he will join the party."

Santonio Holmes comes off PUP list
Updated: August 23, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

Two days after casting doubt on an imminent return, New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes -- 10 months removed from foot surgery -- was added to the active roster Friday after a month on the physically unable to perform list.

Holmes passed the team physical and is eligible to practice. He won't play Saturday night against the New York Giants.

The timing could allow Holmes to be ready for the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Jets have two full practices next week before the final preseason game (he likely won't play), followed by a long week of preparation for the opener.

The mercurial Holmes has kept people guessing about his anticipated return, remarking as recently as Wednesday that he still feels pain in his foot every morning when he wakes up. When told he looked good running sprints before last week's game, he responded: "Looks can be deceiving."

There was suspicion within the organization that Holmes simply wanted to skip training camp. As one source said recently, "He could be milking it and feel fine by Week 1."

This hardly guarantees that he'll play against the Bucs. Holmes noted Wednesday that he has been limited to straight-ahead running, no hard cutting.

But if the Jets didn't expect him to play early in the season, they would've left him on the PUP list to start the year, meaning he'd miss a minimum of six games.

The Jets' brass evidently saw a marked improvement, because general manager John Idzik said Monday that Holmes was "getting close" to a return. Holmes suffered a severe Lisfranc foot injury last season in Week 4, requiring immediate surgery.

Santonio Holmes returns to practice with Jets

After being activated off the physically unable to perform list on Friday, wide receiver Santonio Holmes practiced with the New York Jets Monday for the first time since suffering a Lisfranc injury last September.

According to Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com, Holmes looked “smooth cutting on the field” though he wasn’t running at full speed. Holmes also went through pregame warmups with the Jets prior to their preseason game against the New York Giants but Monday was his first chance to take part since being activated.

Holmes has been somewhat tentative about his status and whether he’ll be ready for the Jets’ season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, returning to practice is a good step toward being able to return to action sooner than later.

Holmes caught 20 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown in just four games last season for the Jets.

Santonio Holmes still putting no timetable on when he’ll be full speed
Posted by Josh Alper on August 28, 2013

AP
At several points this offseason, there have been positive developments regarding Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes‘ recovery from the Lisfranc injury that wiped out his 2012 season.

Most recently, those developments have included Holmes running routes on the field before the Jets faced the Giants last weekend, his activation from the PUP list and his return to practice on Monday. But, like most of the other times there’s been a positive turn, Holmes pulled the reins on Tuesday when he was asked about his progress.

Holmes, who insisted he isn’t downplaying his progress, said he’s feeling better and “hopeful” about Week One, but that there was still no timetable for him to ramp things up to full speed because he has “a lot of steps to continue making” before he’s ready for that. This week has been about gauging what he can do on the field and what he needs to do to keep his foot feeling good enough for him to keep working, and Holmes reiterated that he isn’t going to be rushing back before he’s fully recovered.

“I have a long career ahead of me, so I’m going to take the best risk and the best chances for myself and for the team,” Holmes said in comments distributed by the team.

It’s tempting to say that what’s best for Holmes, who will likely be a free agent after the season, and what’s best for the Jets are at opposition, but the Jets wouldn’t get much benefit from bringing Holmes back quickly only to see him hurt a couple of games later. They need as much Holmes on offense this season as possible, although it remains unlikely they’ll get any until positive reports about Holmes are met with positivity from the man himself.

Santonio Holmes looks good in NY Jets practice, could be ready for Week 1
Santonio Holmes downplayed his progress, saying 'looks can be deceiving,' but teammate Stephen Hill says he looks ready to take the field against the Buccaneers on Sunday.
By Seth Walder / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Santonio Holmes looked good Monday, participating in practice and running routes. Holmes has repeatedly cautioned that “looks can be deceiving,” but at least one of his teammates, Stephen Hill, believes Holmes will be on the field against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

“I think so,” Hill told the Daily News. “Yeah. I mean, he was practicing today, so...”

Jets receiver Santonio Holmes believes he will play this year, but isn't sure about Sunday
By Darryl Slater/The Star-Ledger
September 04, 2013

The Jets’ best wide receiver, Santonio Holmes, said Wednesday he believes he will play at some point this season, but he isn’t sure if he will make his debut in Sunday’s season opener against Tampa Bay and former Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis, who the team traded in the offseason.

“Still don’t know,” Holmes said. “Still haven’t gotten any word from the docs yet on whether I should be playing or not.”

Holmes expects a decision won’t be made about his status for the game until Sunday. He is still limited in practice as he recovers from a Lisfranc (mid-foot) fracture to his left foot, an injury he sustained Sept. 30 against San Francisco. It required two surgeries and a deliberate rehabilitation process that still isn’t over.

Source: Holmes a go in limited role
Updated: September 5, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPN.com
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Barring a setback before Sunday, wide receiver Santonio Holmes is expected to play a limited role in the New York Jets' season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a league source said Thursday.

Holmes, who missed the preseason as he continued to rehab from surgery to repair a severe Lisfranc injury in his left foot, has been working his way back slowly. He didn't practice Thursday, but that was planned ahead of time, according to coach Rex Ryan.

The former Super Bowl MVP has been limited in practice for about a week, but he's running full speed and cutting hard. Ryan said Holmes looks good and expressed optimism that he'll play.

"We'll make sure we have the absolute clearance from our doctors and our trainers before we do that ... but as I've said all along, I certainly hope he plays," Ryan said. "I thought he caught the ball well [Wednesday] and I thought he moved around pretty well."
