WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Santonio ?just wants the ball?
Posted by Mike Florio on March 30, 2012

Jets receiver Santonio Holmes generated plenty of headlines last season. And not for good reasons.

He wasn?t happy with his role. We supplied it, he denied it, plenty of people took his word for it, and in the final analysis it was clear that his desire to catch more passes and his frustration with quarterback Mark Sanchez?s inability to satiate that urge drove a wedge between the two men.

So what does Holmes think about the arrival of Tim Tebow, whose throws at times make the receiver look like an undersized dog chasing a Frisbee that got caught in a gust of wind?

?He didn?t really care [about the trade],? an unnamed player who trains with Holmes in Orlando told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. ??Tone? just wants the ball.?

?Tone? also went on the record with Mehta. ?The media don?t make me and the media don?t break me,? Holmes said. ?I?m Santonio Holmes . . . and that?s it,? he added, as he tapped his chest and extended his arms.

But that?s not it. Santonio Holmes can?t do what he does if he doesn?t get the ball. And if he thought that was a problem with Sanchez taking every snap, it?ll only get worse with Tebow and his catapult accuracy.

Jets' Mark Sanchez, Santonio Holmes getting a jump on offseason work in Orlando
Published: Tuesday, April 10, 201
By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

The Jets assemble for the first time as a team next Monday, but down in Orlando, Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes are taking early steps toward a more successful 2012 season.

At the ESPN Wide World of Sports, where Holmes spends his offseasons with longtime trainer Tom Shaw, the quarterback and the receiver are spending the week training and throwing together along with Jets teammates Dustin Keller and Patrick Turner. Running back Joe McKnight may join the group later in the week.

Holmes extended the invite to Sanchez and his teammates, Shaw said by phone tonight -- a positive step toward rebuilding offensive chemistry after a disappointing 8-8 season marked by locker-room division. Teammates and coaches openly acknowledged a rift between Sanchez and Holmes last season, but the two met earlier this offseason in Florida and are moving forward on a positive note.

"I know for a fact Santonio Holmes and Mark Sanchez are close," Shaw said.

Jets' Santonio Holmes says problems of last season will stay 'down in Miami'

Santonio Holmes has no regrets and no interest in talking about 2011 season.

Santonio Holmes, and the rest of the Jets who arrived for the start of the offseason program today, are looking forward to a fresh start in 2012. And in Holmes' case, that meant not rehashing the tumultuous end to last season.

"It happened down in Miami, and that?s where it?s going to stay, down in Miami," Holmes said today on a conference call with reporters.

Holmes referred to the 2011 season finale in Miami, when the Jets' internal locker-room discord played out on the football field. Holmes was benched by former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer after picking a fight with teammates in the huddle, and afterward some teammates and coaches said he quit. The Jets lost to the Dolphins and missed the playoffs.

"That happened in the 2011-12 season," Holmes said. "That happened in the past. ... We?re worried about the 2012 New York Jets football season, and if you?re not concerned with that, we don?t have anything else to talk about."

Holmes, however, has not addressed reporters since after the game at Miami, so many questions still remained, particularly about his relationship with starting quarterback Mark Sanchez. Holmes said "that was too long ago," and added that he gave his statement after the Dolphins game in January.

When asked if he has any regrets about the way last season ended, Holmes said simply, "Why should I?" He also said he never wondered if he would be back with the team in 2012.

"Nope," he said. "I signed a five-year contract."

As the Jets Regroup, Holmes Has No Regrets
By BEN SHPIGEL
Published: April 16, 2012

The Jets reconvened Monday for the first time since the day after their season ended in dysfunction and despair, a teachable moment that presented an opportunity for introspection and self-improvement.

JETS-articleInline.jpg

Ben Solomon for The New York Times

Santonio Holmes was asked if he had personal regrets about the way the Jets' season ended. ?Why should I?? he said.

Coach Rex Ryan realized that talent is meaningless without cohesion. Nick Mangold learned just how much he missed the playoffs. As for Santonio Holmes, the symbol of the Jets? locker-room turmoil and late-season collapse, the outcome of his self-analysis could best be summarized by three words that, if the 2012 season at all resembles its predecessor, could wind up being the Jets? epitaph. He was asked on a conference call whether he had any personal regrets about last season.

?Why should I?? Holmes said.

As much as the Jets say they want to move beyond one of the more disappointing periods in franchise history ? a message stressed in Ryan?s remarks Monday both to his players and to reporters ? Holmes?s aversion to publicly acknowledging any culpability for their demise last season leaves the impression that not much has changed with him at all.

Santonio Holmes still doesn't get it
Wideout said he has no regrets about 2011; that's not good news for Jets

"Why should I?"

That was Santonio Holmes' answer when asked Monday if he had any regrets over the way he comported himself at the end of last season, when the Jets -- his Jets -- lost their last three games and missed the playoffs.

You remember that stretch. Starting with a 26-point loss to Philadelphia, the Jets disintegrated, in part, because the locker room fractured. Holmes, a supposed captain, was a huge part of the problem. He pouted. He disrespected his quarterback. He got into a fight with teammates in the season finale at Miami. Holmes so dogged it in that last game against the Dolphins -- a game the Jets had to win in order to have a faint hope of reaching the postseason -- that then-offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer benched Holmes for what turned out to be New York's final drive.

When the Jets scored to pull within 19-17, Holmes sat emotionless by himself. A captain, a playmaker, a star receiver, alone on the bench, a nonfactor.

But regrets? Nope. Holmes has none. Not only does Holmes not have any regrets, he doesn't have a clue why he should have any regrets. He doesn't get it. He doesn't understand that acting like a churl is harmful to the team's ultimate goal. He doesn't understand that backstabbing and fighting with teammates is counterproductive. He doesn't understand that it isn't all about him.

Holmes is clueless about how to be a captain, a leader and a winner.

Tony Sparano on Santonio Holmes: 'This guy has really special ability.'

BY Manish Mehta

Four months after Santonio Holmes? frustration bubbled to the surface in an ugly season-ending loss in Miami, new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano is excited to have the mercurial wide receiver in his offense.

?I think that Santonio has special ability,? Sparano said on Thursday. ?When you?ve been on the other sideline and in the other (locker) room preparing for players like the Jets have? having to figure out how you?re going to handle Dustin Keller, having to figure out how you?re going to handle Santonio Holmes or the running game?. This guy has really special ability. He can catch it and run with it He makes the hard catches. I?ve seen him make some really acrobatic catches. He works very hard at it. The guy wants the football?. The thing that I?ve noticed about Tone right now in my time being around him is that this guy is a competitive guy. He loves to compete. I like that with skill players. I just love the fact that those guys love to compete.?

Holmes, who had 51 receptions for a career-low 654 yards last season, expressed no regrets for how he handled matters down the stretch when he skipped a meeting organized by Mark Sanchez during the final week and got into multiple shouting matches in the huddle with teammates before getting benched by then-offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Santonio impresses new Jets wide receiver coach
Jets Blog
By BRIAN COSTELLO
Last Updated: May 18, 2012

When Sanjay Lal took the job as Jets wide receivers coach he heard all of the stories about Santonio Holmes.

The Jets season had just ended a few weeks earlier with Holmes sitting on the bench in Miami for the final two minutes after fighting with teammates on the field. Holmes was labeled a ?cancer,? there was speculation the Jets might get rid of him and the relationship between he and quarterback Mark Sanchez had deteriorated.

Lal decided to ignore all of it. The 42-year-old coach, who spent the last five years with the Raiders, wanted to make his own evaluation.

NEW MAN: New Jets wide receiver coach Sanjay Lal has ignored Santonio Holmes? past antics, and said he has been eager to get better since starting the team?s offseason program.

?A lot of things I had read or been told occur every day on every NFL sideline,? Lal said. ?They?re just not shown. I can honestly say I?ve had to manage receivers between plays, between series, very similar things. It truly is because the good ones are so competitive they just want the ball. What makes them good is that quality, so there is frustration attached to it at times.?

Bill Cowher: Jets WR Santonio Holmes is 'ready to move on'
Published: Friday, May 18, 2012
By Conor Orr/The Star-Ledger

Santonio Holmes has already gotten a head start on rebuilding his chemistry with quarterback Mark Sanchez and has managed to make amends with some players involved in the final-game blowup that led to his benching.

Some who know him well, like the man who drafted him, Bill Cowher, don't think this is smoke and mirrors, either. Although 2011 ended in disastrous fashion, Cowher thinks the wideout can rebuild is reputation this season.

"I think emotions run high, you get to the sideline and people do things that, in hindsight, they wish they hadn't done," the former Steelers coach said in support of "Melanoma Exposed," a partnership designed to create awareness and promote prevention surrounding the disease. "It's a very emotional game and at times it lends yourself to doing things that, you know, that may not be the appropriate thing to do at those times.

"Santonio, he'd be the first one to tell you that he'd have liked to handle that a little differently, but he's a guy that's going to but it beside him, he's a very good football player, I think he's very committed. He likes to work at it and he's ready to move on to this year."

Cowher, who lost his wife Kaye to melanoma in 2010, spoke while working to get people tested and understand risk factors related to skin cancer. The organization will be hosting free screening events at MetLife Stadium on June 24 and Sun Life Stadium on June 16.

"I became much more understanding about it and educated about it and what melanoma is. The biggest thing right now is getting people to get screened," he said. "Screening is the most important thing to do in terms of doing it on a regular basis and also understanding your body to be able to look for certain things on your body."

Holmes returns to OTAs
June, 4, 2012
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

After missing four straight voluntary practices while out of the country, WR Santonio Holmes returned to the Jets' OTAs on Monday, according to a source.

Holmes didn't participate in last week's sessions because he was on a goodwill trip to Germany, where he visited U.S. troops. He tweeted photos of himself on the trip.

The Jets still have three remaining OTA practices, followed by a mandatory minicamp next week. People close to the team are curious to see if Holmes attends Mark Sanchez's upcoming "Jets West" passing camp in Southern California.

Holmes was invited, as was every skill-position player on offense, but he hadn't responded as of Monday. He and Sanchez, of course, had a well-documented rift toward the end of last season. Since then, they've both indicated that everything is fine between them.

Santonio will be at 'Jets West'
June, 6, 2012
By Mike Mazzeo | ESPNNewYork.com

With their well-documented feud seemingly behind them, Jets receiver Santonio Holmes will be attending quarterback Mark Sanchez's "Jets West" passing camp in the next few weeks, Holmes announced Thursday on his Twitter account.

"YES! I will be attending "Jets West". Will be a great few days with the guys," Holmes tweeted Wednesday.

Holmes didn't attend last season's workout during the lockout; he was an unrestricted free agent at the time. He did attend in 2010.

The feud between Holmes and Sanchez came to light at the end of last season, when it was reported that Holmes refused to attend Sanchez's quarterback-wide receivers meetings in the days leading up to the season finale in Miami. The pair has indicated that everything is fine between them since.

Holmes and Sanchez worked out in Orlando in April.

Santonio Holmes not ready for reps
Updated: June 7, 2012
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A disgusted Santonio Holmes, who missed a handful of voluntary practice sessions while out of the country on a USO-sponsored trip to a U.S. Air Force base in Germany, pulled himself out of practice Thursday because he felt he was unfairly overworked by coaches.

The New York Jets' top wide receiver staged a mini-meltdown near the end of the two-hour workout, limping off the field and tossing his helmet. He spoke with receivers coach Sanjay Lal, also drawing immediate attention from the trainer.

Afterward, Holmes insisted he wasn't injured, but he clearly was bothered that the coaches wanted to give him a full workload despite his time away.

"I was talking to the coach, letting him understand it was too many reps today," Holmes said. "I've been gone for a while, so I can't be at full tempo like the rest of the guys and where they want us to be at."

NY Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes injures hamstring on first day of minicamp
WR limited to drills on sidelines after limping off field last week

New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes (10) during the Jets minicamp their training facility in Florham Park, NJ.

Jets wideout Santonio Holmes dressed for a workout on the first day of the team?s mandatory minicamp, but ran only a few agility drills on the side due to tightness in his hamstring. Rex Ryan said Holmes sustained the injury last week when he cut his reps short and angrily limped off the field during OTAs.

?Veteran players know their body better than anybody,? Ryan said. ?It?s obviously better to pull yourself out of a drill than to sustain an injury, and I think that?s where Santonio was last week.?

Even after Holmes missed much of OTAs last week, offensive coordinator Tony Sparano doesn?t feel that the former Super Bowl MVP will have much trouble picking up the new offense.

?Santonio has done an outstanding job from a mental standpoint right now in his preparation, understanding what his role will be,? Sparano said. ?I have absolutely zero concern about that.?

Holmes ducks media ... again
June, 14, 2012
By Jane McManus | ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- For the third straight day, Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes ducked out on media interview requests at the team?s mandatory minicamp. The move is in violation of the league?s access policy, which stipulates that players are available for all three days.

?We will discuss the situation with the Jets and remind Santonio of his obligations,? NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello said.

Holmes took part in individual drills, but with a hamstring injury sustained on the final OTA of the season a week ago, did not take part in any team drills for the third straight day.

Last week Holmes was frustrated with the number of reps he got a week after returning from a trip to Germany, where he visited an Air Force base. Holmes tossed his helmet to the ground in apparent frustration, spoke with a trainer and then talked to wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal.

?I was talking to the coach, letting him understand it was too many reps today," Holmes said last Thursday. "I've been gone for a while, so I can't be at full tempo like the rest of the guys and where they want us to be at.?

Apparently Holmes didn?t like the fallout, because he hasn?t spoken since.

Santonio Holmes discusses Jets QBs
Updated: July 16, 2012
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

Lightning-rod wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who spent last week with New York Jets teammates Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow at Sanchez's "Jets West" passing camp in California, said Monday night he doesn't think a two-quarterback system can succeed in the NFL.

But he believes the Sanchez-Tebow dynamic can work because it will be scripted, with Tebow operating from a specific set of plays -- or so the Jets claim. Without that, Holmes suggested, it could pose a problem for Sanchez.

"You have to allow one quarterback to get into the rhythm of a game and it starts from the preparation in practice," Holmes said in an interview on the NFL Network. "(It's) knowing the first couple of plays that he's going to take these reps, it's getting the feel for coming onto the field with the crowd awaiting you, it's making the mistakes early in the game to finishing the games at the end.

"You don't just change a guy out just because he has a few mistakes early into a game. Coming into this season, we have a lot to expect from Sanchez."

The Jets plan to use both quarterbacks, but they've been emphatic about Tebow's role, insisting he's not competing with Sanchez and that he'll be deployed each game to run Wildcat-style plays.

"Tebow is going to have plays where he comes in and plays," Holmes said. "Whether he plays at quarterback, Sanchez is on the field or off the field, those are the plays that coach has designed for Tebow to be ran that week. I'm pretty sure he's going to get them done and he's going to do his job just as well as any other quarterback would when they get an opportunity to get on the field."

Santonio Holmes wants New York media to support team
Posted by Darin Gantt on July 18, 2012

The members of the media that cover a particular team are around them constantly, watching and reporting on their every move. They go to the places the team goes, stay in many of the same hotels the team stays in.

They are not, however, part of the team.

Somebody in the Jets media relations department needs to explain that basic concept to Santonio Holmes.

In an appearance on an NFL.com podcast with Dave Damesheck (and recapped by Newsday?s Bob Glauber), Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes said his relationship with quarterback Mark Sanchez is fine, and their problems last season are behind them.

?One day you have a fight the next day you make up,? he said.

He also took the opportunity to scold all those dastardly, negative (dare I say, diabolical) reporters like Glauber that they should be more supportive of the Jets.

?If you guys want to be, and this is for the New York media, if you guys want to be a part of our team and want to feel so important, be there to support us, not to try to break us down,? Holmes said. ?Because [there?s] not one day that we all step in that locker room and we try to break each other down, that we talk bad about the way that person played because it affects the team the way one person plays if they don?t play to perfection.

?If the New York media wants to be a part of our team and wants to continue writing about us, write positive things, stay away from the negative because it doesn?t do anything good for our team that you want to report all the negative things that happen and that?s all you want to talk to us players about. We live for one thing and that?s to play football and not to entertain you people in the media.?

Rex Ryan advises Santonio Holmes
Updated: July 26, 2012
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Rex Ryan wants Santonio Holmes to catch passes, not to pass judgment on the team's plans for Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

The New York Jets' coach, commenting on Holmes' recent criticism of the two-quarterback system, responded with a mild rebuke.

"Well, I understand what Holmes is saying, you know Tone's talking about a guy ... (the starting quarterback) has to get a feel and all that kind of stuff," Ryan said in an interview with ESPN's Sal Paolantonio. "But I brought Santonio in here to be a receiver, not to be the offensive coordinator. And that's the way it is.

"I love Santonio, but if I wanted to hire him as our offensive coordinator, we would've."

Ryan hired former Miami Dolphins coach Tony Sparano to run the offense, which will include Tebow in a wildcat package. Holmes said he doesn't believe a two-quarterback system can work in the NFL because it disrupts the starter's rhythm.

"First of all, every player is entitled to their own opinion," Sparano told Paolantonio. "I been around long enough to know that there's a lot of definitions of two-quarterback systems, and what some of these things mean, and what they don't mean."
