WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Holmes goes from gripes to grabs
Jets Blog
By MARK CANNIZZARO
Last Updated: October 18, 2011

Santonio Holmes, utilizing his team captaincy as a platform, has had a lot to say of late.

Following the Jets’ loss in Baltimore three weeks ago, he criticized the offensive line for not giving Mark Sanchez enough time to get the ball down the field.

He did it again early last week, spurring Jets veteran right guard Brandon Moore to lash out at him Friday, saying calling out his teammates in public is not the way a captain is supposed to operate.

Fortunately for Moore and the Jets, Holmes played like a team captain last night, catching three passes for 63 yards, including the game-clinching touchdown, a 38-yard catch-and-run in the fourth quarter that capped a 24-6 win over the Dolphins.

SOAR FEELINGS: Santonio Holmes touches down in the end zone on his 38-yard catch-and-run in the Jets’ 24-6 home win last night, but after the game refused to address his spat with lineman Brandon Moore.

After the game, though, while a number of Jets spoke about the team squashing any perceived rift in the locker room, Holmes became suddenly tight-lipped, refusing to get into his spat with Moore.

“We’re not talking about that, we’re moving on to the next question,” Holmes said. “We just won a ballgame today, and that’s what we’re focused on right now. What happened last week was last week. We’re looking forward to what’s going on next week. We’re moving on to the next game. That’s where we are with that right now, not what happened last week.”

Santonio Holmes denies report he's unhappy with role in Jets offense
BY Manish Mehta

Santonio Holmes denied a recent report that suggested that he wasn?t thrilled with his role in the Jets offense.

Last week, Pro Football Talk reported that Holmes was ?thoroughly dissatisfied with his role in the offense.?

?Never heard that one. Next question,? Holmes said about the report. ?I didn?t talk to anybody about it. Never heard about it.?

So, is he happy with his role?

?We?re here winning ball games right now,? Holmes said.

The Jets signed Holmes to a 5-year, $45 million deal in the offseason. He?s third on the team in targets with 41. The 27-year-old Holmes has just 22 catches for 311 and three touchdowns through seven games.

?We?re here to win ballgames,? Holmes said. ?The numbers speak for themselves whether you had 3 catches for 1 touchdown or 4 catches for three touchdowns. The numbers speak for themselves at the end of the day. All we can do is hope that we continue winning ball games. We can?t worry about how many catches and yards and touchdowns we put up each game. We just know that we have to do what we have to do week in and week out to help this team continue stacking wins on top of wins.?

?We?re winning ball games,? said Holmes, who had two catches for 24 yards against the Chargers before the bye week. ?That?s pretty much all I can ask for at this point. (Three) touchdowns on the season, I think. I think that?s a pretty good ratio. 22 catches. (Three) touchdowns. Fits well in my book right now.?

Mark Sanchez has done a good job managing all of his pass-catching weapons in an offense that doesn?t lean on one particular player.

?He?s our general,? Holmes said. ?He keeps us under control. We have to control him a little bit when he loses his cool. He?s one of those guy that always (saying), ?I got you next time.?? Just keeping us all high spirited. That?s a big key of being a young quarterback and knowing you have two veteran guys who have been there, done that. We?ll complain a little bit about the ball. But he has a lot on his plate and he?s doing a real good job of controlling it."

Said Sanchez: "We?re not in the business of keeping people smiling. We?re in the business of winning.

Holmes making plays; We got duped
November, 6, 2011
By Mike Mazzeo

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Mark Sanchez?s third-quarter touchdown throw to Santonio Holmes on Sunday afternoon was perfect.

Well, yeah, because Holmes made a circus catch, reeling in the pass with three Buffalo defenders around him.

?First off, it was a great pass from Sanchez. The confidence he had and believing in me, that he can deliver the pass between, two, maybe three defenders in the red zone. He placed it where only I could catch it. I knew I had to grab it, pull it down and make a big play from it.?

Holmes only caught three passes for 29 yards in the Jets? 27-11 road demolition of the Bills, but he did have that one big score.

Oh, and there was the 42-yard pass interference penalty he drew right before he caught the TD, which was somewhat questionable.

?I think those guys did a pretty good job trying to cover us,? Holmes said. ?But they obviously got caught and the refs were right on top of them when they needed to be and they made the calls that were necessary.?

Holmes' charity event raises $25k
November, 8, 2011
By Mike Mazzeo

LINDEN, N.J. -- With 3:30 remaining in the third quarter on Sunday afternoon in Buffalo, Santonio Holmes ran a slow post, contorted his body and somehow managed to snag an 8-yard touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez with three Bills defenders surrounding him.

The TD, which increased the Jets? lead over Buffalo to 20-3, was 30th of the wide receiver?s career.

?A blessing,? Holmes called it.

Holmes says he feels was blessed to be able to play in the NFL and win a Super Bowl MVP award. It was a dream he had since he was young. A dream he was able to realize after a standout career in high school and at Ohio State. A dream that became a reality, in part, because of one of the other blessings in his life: his oldest son, Santonio Holmes III.

On Monday night, nine-year-old Santonio III was running around Jersey Lanes bowling alley with his friends, enjoying himself and having fun like most kids should.

?He?s wonderful,? Holmes said.

Holmes will face foe from Super Bowl past
December, 15, 2011
By Rich Cimini

On most downs, Santonio Holmes probably will be covered by Nnamdi Asomugha or Asante Samuel. Privately, he probably wouldn't mind seeing the Eagles' No. 3 cornerback, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

They have a history.

In Super Bowl XLIII, Steelers vs. Cardinals, Holmes schooled Rodgers-Cromartie, a rookie at the time. Holmes caught nine passes for 131 yards, including his memorable, game-winning TD grab with 35 seconds to play.

"Everything that was done in the Super Bowl was on (him)," said Holmes, who was actually surrounded by three players -- including Rodgers-Cromartie -- on his epic touchdown.

Evidently, it wasn't a good game by Rodgers-Cromartie.

"I can speak with great confidence on that one -- not at all," Holmes said, smiling.

NY Jets Santonio Holmes draws penalty and criticism for touchdown celebration
Wide receiver also loses fumble, causes interception on long day against Eagles
BY Kevin Armstrong
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Monday, December 19 2011

PHILADELPHIA ? In 60 minutes Sunday, Jets wideout Santonio Holmes fumbled, failed to haul in a pass that resulted in an interception and was flagged for flapping his arms after the sole scoring effort of his day, which ended in a devastating 45-19 defeat for the Jets.

?Probably one of the most inconsistent games I?ve had since I?ve been here,? said Holmes, now in his second season with the team. ?We laid an egg today.?

Holmes, typically a sure-handed receiver who had fumbled just one other time this season, hurt the Jets more than he helped, drawing a personal foul for taunting the Eagles in the back of the end zone when the Jets trailed 28-10.

During the celebration, he placed his right foot atop the ball and slowly waved his arms, a departure from his standard motion of airplane wings. It cost the Jets 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff.

?Just being a vet I can?t do silly things like that,? said Holmes, who caught four balls for 40 yards.

It was his fourth straight game with a touchdown, but marked the sixth consecutive contest in which he had less than 60 receiving yards. He is on pace for the worst statistical season of his six-year career.

?He?s one of our best players, we?ve got to get him the ball,? Mark Sanchez said. ?Nothing?s going to change. Right after the interception we went right back to him and got a pass interference.?

Jets' Santonio Holmes vows to move on after performance in Eagles loss
Published: Wednesday, December 21, 2011
By Conor Orr/The Star-Ledger

The embattled Santonio Holmes had no interest in reviewing the past yesterday, preferring instead to jump head-first into some crosstown banter with the Giants.

His target? A secondary that, he feels, is ready to be exploited.

?They?ve given up big plays, they are poor tackling guys,? the Jets wide receiver said. ?We know plays can be made over their head, we?ve just got to be willing to take advantage of them and make them count.?

It?s apparent that last Sunday, a 45-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that may have been Holmes? worst game as a Jet, is not an issue for the wide receiver.

The opening-drive fumble that was returned for a touchdown, the missed catch on the next drive that was intercepted and led to another score, and the untimely penalty for taunting after his touchdown catch have been dealt with in house. He is still as confident as ever.

He said there is no ill will between himself and head coach Rex Ryan and that the two had ?nothing negative? to talk about.

He added that his relationship with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is nothing to complain about either, despite the series of plays that required Schottenheimer?s attention on Sunday. Schottenheimer said the two discussed surrendering momentum and that Holmes agreed with everything they talked about.

?If a guy drops a ball to get an interception, why wouldn?t the offensive coordinator be upset that his star guy didn?t catch a pass?? Holmes said.

Jets teammate on Holmes: ?He quit?
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 1, 2012

There were a lot of ugly moments during the Jets? meltdown in Miami Sunday, but one stood above the rest.

Santonio Holmes, after barking at a teammate in the huddle, was pulled from the game late in the fourth quarter. He sat on the bench with his helmet off, not even paying attention as his team?s season ended.

After the game, one unnamed Jets teammate said Holmes ?quit? on the team. And it didn?t start this week.

?He quit,? the player told Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. ?It?s happened for the past two to three weeks. It?s happened all season.?

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer apparently made the call to take Holmes out.

?I looked out there, and I was wondering why he wasn?t out there myself,? coach Rex Ryan said. ?I didn?t bench Santonio. You?ll have to ask him.?

It looks like Ryan is in self-preservation mode, trying to maintain his relationship with Holmes. Multiple players told Vrentas that Holmes ?moped? throughout the game and often ignored Mark Sanchez. One player already told Holmes to get off the field if he wasn?t going to help the team.

?I?ll tell you what, it?s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner,? LaDainian Tomlinson said. ?When you?re a captain, guys are looking at you, you?ve got to lead by example. You?ve got to play your tail off until the last play. And when that don?t happen, you have guys looking at you in a way that captains shouldn?t be looked at.?

Tomlinson said that guys were unhappy with Holmes? demeanor. That demeanor didn?t improve much after the game.

Holmes made it clear he wasn?t happy with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, saying it wasn?t his decision if Schottenheimer returned.

Holmes was then asked about his future with the team.

?Thank you guys,? Holmes said before abruptly ending his press conference.
