WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Santonio Holmes needs more surgery
Updated: December 3, 2012
By Jane McManus | ESPNNewYork.com

LINDEN, N.J. -- New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes will need an additional surgery on his left foot in February.

The Jets marquee receiver, who was back in New York for his annual fundraising event Monday, said the operation will focus on removing plates installed in October to repair a Lisfranc injury.

Holmes said doctors have told him he won't be able to start training again until possibly April. He was noncommittal on being ready for training camp in August, given the long recovery ahead.

"I've got another surgery in February," said Holmes, who visited the Jets' facility Friday for the first time since being placed on season-ending injured reserve. "That's all I know."

Wearing a large black walking boot, Holmes made his first public remarks since his season ended at his annual bowling fundraiser called "Strikes for Sickle Cell."

He has been recovering in Florida with his family, reading more books, spending more time with his kids. Friday was picture day, and Holmes was in the group photo with his teammates.

"I really miss being here," Holmes said.

Holmes still talks with Jets coach Rex Ryan every week -- they call or text before a game. Holmes said he has played for 20 years without an injury this serious.

Holmes sustained the Lisfranc injury on Sep. 30 in a loss to the San Francisco 49ers at MetLife Stadium.

"I knew the minute I didn't get off the ground that my season was over," Holmes said.

He had surgery two weeks later and was placed on IR.

Holmes was the only wide receiver on the Jets roster with multiple years of experience with quarterback Mark Sanchez. The two did not always had a placid relationship, particularly at the end of last season.

Holmes watched Greg McElroy's debut and was glad the Jets were able to defeat the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. But he wasn't ready to throw his hat in with Sanchez, McElroy or Tim Tebow to start this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"I leave that up to those (coaches), man," Holmes said. "If I get involved in that, I'll be the talk of the world."

Santonio Holmes reportedly asked to redo Jets contract
By Kevin Patra NFL.com
Published: Feb. 25, 2013

The cash-strapped New York Jets will attempt to restructure wide receiver Santonio Holmes' contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday night, citing sources close to the team.

Just last week the Jets cut veterans Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith in an effort to get under the salary cap. Getting Holmes to restructure his contract could free up additional cap space and allow Gang Green to make more roster moves vital to their overhaul.

Holmes is coming off a foot injury that caused him to miss 12 games in 2012.

According to the report, Holmes has an $11 million base salary for 2013, $7.5 million guaranteed, and a $12.5 million cap number. An $11 million cap hit would, at first blush, seem to prohibit cutting the receiver.

However, as ESPN New York's Rich Cimini reported, there is offset language in Holmes' contract, meaning if cut, he can earn no more than $7.5 million in 2013. The Jets might be able to use that slight leverage to convince the 29-year-old to shave a bit off his contract.

The Jets desperately need playmakers, and Holmes knows this. He could tell the Jets to take a hike and dare them to cut him. New general manager John Idzik seems determined to clean house of bad contracts given out by the last regime, so there is a small chance the Jets will cut their most dynamic offensive player.

Will Holmes take a pay cut?
March, 8, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

One of the mini-dramas that will play out over the next few days is the status of WR Santonio Holmes, who was approached by the team more than a week ago to re-work his contract. The two sides are still talking, according to a source, with the Jets insisting that he reduce his $11 million base salary. The team needs the cap space as it heads into free agency.

This should be interesting.

It's a bit complicated because Holmes is guaranteed $7.5 million whether he's on the team or not, but there's language in his contract that prevents him from exceeding $7.5 million if he's released. In other words, if he signs elsewhere for $3 million in 2013, the Jets are on the hook for only $4.5 million. He can't "double dip."

Assuming the Jets are offering more than $7.5 million for '13, it pays for Holmes to take the cut and stay put -- unless he's willing to sacrifice some money to start fresh and try to land with a contender. New GM John Idzik is known for his cap/negotiating acumen; let's see how he plays this one. It's hard to imagine Woody Johnson eating that much money. Plus, Holmes is their best receiving threat, although he's coming off a complicated foot surgery.

Santonio?s best move will be to take a pay cut

Jets receiver Santonio Holmes has $7.5 million in guaranteed salary this year. He has another $3.5 million in non-guaranteed salary.

The Jets want him to drop the non-guaranteed money. Holmes could refuse. The Jets would then likely cut him. And he would make only $7.5 million elsewhere, thanks to the offset provision in his contract.

Holmes likely to be limited in camp
March, 19, 2013
By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

Santonio Holmes, still rehabbing his surgically repaired foot, will be on a limited program throughout the spring and summer, meaning he could miss part of training camp. The objective, according to Rex Ryan, is to make sure the veteran wide receiver is ready for the season opener.

"The main thing is, I just hope he's ready for opening day," Ryan told reporters Tuesday at the league meetings in Phoenix. "That's going to be the goal. ... I'll lean on [trainer] John Mellody and have all the confidence in the world that he'll get him right."

Ryan said its "certainly a possibility" that Holmes will be limited in training camp. It sounds like they will use the LaRon Landry Plan. Landry, coming off an injury-plagued season with the Redskins, was monitored closely in camp and placed on a scaled-back practice regimen. It worked; he didn't miss any regular-season games.

Holmes underwent surgery last October after suffering a LisFranc foot injury. He recently had the surgical screws removed. The Jets need a healthy Holmes because he's their best playmaker on offense. He recently took a $3.5 million pay cut.

Santonio Holmes doesn't attend Jets voluntary workouts to continue rehab of foot injury on his own

BY Manish Mehta

The Jets began their voluntary offseason conditioning program on Monday without their best offensive playmaker. The Daily News has learned that wide receiver Santonio Holmes did not report for the start of the team's voluntary program.

Holmes, who missed much of last season due to the injury, has been taking classes and rehabbing at Ohio State this offseason.

Rex Ryan said earlier this offseason that the plan is to make sure that Holmes, who took a pay cut a couple months ago, is ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

Santonio Holmes is currently attending class at Ohio State and rehabbing his Lisfranc injury as the Jets enter rookie minicamp and OTAs.

But his offseason has still proven eventful, especially when the Jets forced him to restructure his contract, leaving him with only the guaranteed money he is owed heading into this season.

When asked why he agreed to the cut, Holmes said it was because he had the best interest of the Jets in mind.

"I want to be here for the long term, and if it means helping out the team I'm going to continue helping out the team in any way possible," Holmes said on the NBC Sports Network Wednesday night.

Morning take: Santonio Holmes on PUP?
June, 6, 2013
By James Walker | ESPN.com

Here are the most interesting stories Thursday in the AFC East:

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he's unsure if No. 1 receiver Santonio Holmes (foot) will start the regular season on the physically unable to perform list.

Morning take: Going to the PUP list would put Holmes out for at least the first six games. The Jets? offense already is in dire straights and desperately needs Holmes back in the lineup sooner than later.

Santonio Holmes' rehab from a Lisfranc injury has been gradual. He spoke today but offered little certainty for the upcoming season.

Asked if he would be ready for training camp, Holmes responded: "It's taking one day at a time. I won't know until it happens."

And if he would be ready for the Bucs Week 1, Holmes offered "no comment."

For now, Holmes can say that his rehab has been "great." But he is limited in all that he does and would not say that he can jog, only that he is restricted to working out.

The hardest part for him was simply to learn how to walk again. But he has no concerns about being able to play at his position.

"To have something like this happen it kind of puts a damper in your whole physical ability to do anything," he said.

If he is able to play opening week, he would have a chance to face his former teammate, Darrelle Revis.

"It would be a great matchup," he said. "It would be a lot of fun to to go out there against an old nemesis."

Holmes also weighed in on a few other topics other than himself.

Santonio Holmes had grade four lisfranc

Santonio Holmes, who would rather wash dirty locker-room towels than speak to the media, provided details of his Lisfranc foot injury in an interview last week with the Jets' official web site. He said it was diagnosed as a Grade 4 injury (the most serious kind), meaning a muscle tear and joint separation in his mid-foot. Screws and a plate were removed in a follow-up surgery in March, but he said two screws will remain in his foot permanently. He said his "target date" is the first day of training camp, but that seems overly ambitious, considering he still isn't running and cutting. Between Holmes and Hill, the need for a receiver is so blatantly obvious. GM John Idzik needs to spend the next two to three months looking to make a deal or else he's giving the offense no chance.

JETS TOP 25: No. 6 Santonio Holmes

By BRIAN COSTELLO
Posted: July 17, 2013

53013Jets01BK105133--415x415.jpg

As the Jets get close to training camp, I am going to examine the roster and give you my top 25 players on the Jets roster. Each weekday we will reveal another person on the list, leading right into camp. I am not including rookies on this list because I do not feel it is possible to fully evaluate them before they play a game. Hope you enjoy.

No. 6: SANTONIO HOLMES

Last year?s ranking: 7

Position: Wide Receiver

Age: 29

How acquired: Traded a 2010 fifth-round pick to the Steelers for him on April 12, 2010

Contract status: 3 years, $28.75 million remaining

Looking back at 2012: The 2012 season ended before it really began for Holmes. He suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury in his left foot in the fourth game of the season.

There were some promising signs from Holmes before the injury. He had nine catches for 147 yards against the Dolphins in Week 3 and showed some chemistry with quarterback Mark Sanchez.

That all went out the window against the 49ers when he was injured. Holmes? absence really hurt the Jets. For all of his baggage, he still is the best playmaker the Jets have when he is healthy.

Outlook for 2013: Is there a bigger wildcard for the Jets this year? Holmes did nothing all spring after two surgeries on his foot. It sounds like he will start training camp on the physically unable to perform list. The Jets hope he?ll be ready for Week 1, but no one seems certain.

If Holmes returns and can recapture his old form, the Jets offense looks a lot better than it did this spring when he was not practicing. If he cannot overcome the injury or is a shell of his former self, the Jets offense could be historically bad.

Holmes is the most important player on the roster right now. He may be motivated when he returns by the idea that he is probably playing for a contract. This is likely his last season with the Jets. They would save $8.25 million against the salary cap in 2014 by cutting him.

During his time with the Jets, Holmes has been a hero (2010) and a goat (2011). He?s always interesting and this season will be no different.

Holmes and his surgically repaired foot. He's expected to begin camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list. The big question is, will he be ready by Week 1? That's the goal, but he's recovering from a Grade 4 (the most severe) LisFranc injury. There are no guarantees. You can bet Holmes won't take any unnecessary risks because he knows he probably will be a cap casualty after the season, and he doesn't want to hit free agency with a bad wheel.

Santonio Holmes making progress from Lisfranc injury

Photo credit: AP | Santonio Holmes reportedly a Lisfranc fracture of his left foot on a non-contact injury in Week 4 against San Francisco and missed the rest of the 2012 season.

Recovery has been a long process for Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who suffered a Lisfranc foot injury in Week 4 last season that caused him to miss 12 games.

But the slow pace has been by design for Holmes, who spoke with reporters Saturday during the uSTADIUM "Flags for Foundations" charity event on Roosevelt Island.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Holmes' III and Long Foundation, which assists those suffering from sickle cell anemia.

"We've been doing quite a bit of things in rehab and it's starting to get better," Holmes said. "I think that's all the coaches and trainers are looking forward for me to do is to continue to make progress today and not have any setbacks by moving too fast."

Holmes, who has been running on a treadmill three times a week, said there's no timetable for a return.

"The season doesn't start until September and we definitely have to take our time and be ready to go when the bell rings," Holmes said.

Holmes might begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, but he remains confident he'll play at some point.

"Mentally, that's all I've been thinking about, is being the person that I have [been]," he said. "I think that's the first key to getting myself back on the field and to be able to play with confidence is to be strong-minded and not have any thoughts about what if . . . Just keep it the way it's always been."

As for the other issues surrounding the Jets, most notably the quarterback position, Holmes is leaving that decision to the coaching staff.

Said Holmes: "These are guys competing for their own position, and me, as a returning guy, I want to compete for my own position as well."

But he wouldn't be surprised if Geno Smith beats out Mark Sanchez and said of coach Rex Ryan: "If Rex loves him, we've got to love him."
