WR Ray Small (official thread)

he made one really bad move when he returned one of his kick-offs. He caught the ball about 5 deep in the end zone and hesitated for a second then, took off to get to the 14 yard line. I was surprised he was back returning after that one.

Yes, and did you notice Brandon Saine checking him a couple of times to be sure he didn't try to do that again. These are two explosive kick off returners, it's just a matter of time one of them takes one to the house.

whats up with our punt returns? is their no blocking? was wiscy kicking to the left sideline when the buckeyes had 'return right' called and vice-versa?

i see small running sideline to sideline alot..

On one return, Brandon leveled a guy to the left of Ray. That was a great block, other than that it was Ray running east - west as you said.

The "Never Satisfied" motto will come into play. One of these guys is going to WOW us yet this year.

And then made worse with attitude issues after they tried to send him a message.

Im sure in light of his fellow teammates suspension from the team for off-field issues, it also made his punishment a bit tougher to take. Hey, you wanna play ball? You better come correct off the field then, no matter how brightly you shine on the turf.

Potential vs. Performance

Let's see if this motivation works...didn't help EJ Underwood.
I still remember how much promise I felt Ray Small had after the first TD I saw him score - a short pass to the right that he ran in for a TD - sure hands, speed, elusiveness and all the potential to be the next great OSU receiver. While you might say the big hit was a factor, it is curious that since then all that potential has never really made it to on the field performance, except for a few highlight catches.

While he needs to deal with his issues, stripping his number may be more demoralizing than disciplinary. IMHO, discipline should penalize one without stigmatizing, giving one a chance to fully return to good graces with character and honor. Seeing the new number will always remind folks of past sins - kind of like the "Scarlett Letter".
