WR Ray Small (official thread)

While he needs to deal with his issues, stripping his number may be more demoralizing than disciplinary. IMHO, discipline should penalize one without stigmatizing, giving one a chance to fully return to good graces with character and honor. Seeing the new number will always remind folks of past sins - kind of like the "Scarlett Letter".

Yeesh, it's just a number. It's not like he wears a jersey with the word "dumbass" across the back of it.

Per Cleve PD

now wearing #82....stripped of #4 due to "off-field" reasons
You've been around here long enough to provide a link or source, even if it was read in the paper.

Why do you assume:

- the number cannot be earned back? That's not my understanding at all.

- that he doesn't need to earn his way back to those good graces, as things stand now?

I guess because it was not stated in anything I read that he could get it back. If he can, that would be great!!!

:oh:

I assumed he could earn his way back to good graces - but IMHO it would be much better if he could get his old number back for the reasons mentioned - glad you might have info that he can!!

:io:

In any case - I am really pulling for Ray Small to be the receiver we all think he can be!

Reporters noticed that Small's number had been changed from the 4 he wore last season to number in the 80s. Small's practice participation was also limited. Hazell was asked if the switch in numbers was a disciplinary action.

"Just a little reminder. That's all it is," said Hazell, who then confirmed that Small's limited participation in practice was not a result of injury.

"Other decision," said Hazell when asked if Small's practice status was the result of a physical problem or some other decision.

"He's about three quarters of the way in. We'll probably get him a couple of reps tomorrow in the scrimmage," said Hazell.

Seems like the number switch may be beneficial in the long run for the punt return unit.
Last year when the return team came on the field, Kurt Coleman would be forced to leave the field because of wearing a duplicate number with Small.
Not a big deal but sure must alleviaate some personnel decisions and confusion for ST coaches.

True, it is just a number, and it is more of a a perception thing. While it is just my opinion, it seemed a bit uneceesary. To some their uniform number is important and serves as thier identy.

FWIW - it has been reported many times that some Professional athletes buy or offer to buy their old numbers from other players on their teams, or that college recruits try to get their old HS numbers. So I guess others may have the same "dumbass" opinion.

Then what do you advocate doing? Are you against benching him or moving him off the first team and making him earn it back? That too can be 'demoralizing'.

True, any form of discipline can demoralize - hopefully only for the short term though. The forms of discipline you mention and others work fine. As in my original post I favor "discipline that penalizes but does not stigmatize" or leave a lasting reminder when and if one does earn it back.

Another opinion - love your signature picture - the 10's are my favorite!

Tressel forced to take a number
Disciplinary action results in Small going from No. 4 to No. 82

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEAL C. LAURON | DISPATCH
Now entering his junior season at Ohio State, receiver Ray Small, here scoring a TD against Northwestern last season, is in coach Jim Tressel's doghouse.

There's nothing figurative about Ray Small's fall from grace -- he wears it on his back. As part of his punishment for a mystery transgression, the Ohio State receiver this spring was stripped of his No. 4 and given No. 82.
That hurts, much more than the physical conditioning Small has been forced to endure while his teammates have practiced the past few weeks.
"That would be hard," teammate Brian Robiskie said. "You definitely wear your number with a lot of pride."
It's a very visible and public humiliation, almost akin to being put in the stocks in the town square in colonial times

CPD: Ray Small demoted, at least in the media guide

Ohio State football: Ray Small demoted, at least in the media guide

A glance at the 2008 Ohio State media guide created an obvious question about one current Buckeye: Ray Small, the junior receiver from Glenville.

He is not listed in order and given an entire page in the guide, like the rest of the scholarship players.

Based on that article and some of the previous post by some of the more experienced and informed posters I tend to think Ray Small is deep in that dog house. If he really is I hope he is working his tail off and doing the right things to get out of it.
