WR Ray Small (official thread)

Stop by the supermarket and pick up some hairgel, 'cause Kiper's on the bandwagon.

ESPN - Mel Kiper's Personnel Points - College Football

The electrifying 5-foot-11, 175 pounder flashed his highlight film ability on Saturday night against Minnesota. On a 37-yard reverse, Small kicked it into an extra gear that showcased his awesome speed and big-play potential. He also caught two passes for 20 yards.

In the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see how much of an impact he's able to provide. All I can tell you is that there aren't many DBs who can run with this kid.

Agreed, teddy had a great first step but I believe Ray has quicker agility. Also, he gets north-south a lot more consistently than Teddy.

I agree here. Ray has proven he doesn't seem to have any fear of getting North-South...great explosion through the hole. Not a lot of jitterbugging, just explosion. I can't wait for him to start getting some more touches. I think he'll also be great on the deep ball as well. Let's hope Todd is practicing putting some air under that sucker so he can let Ray just run under it!

But as for Teddy...I think he might've just been trying a little too hard last year to create the big one and thus didn't look like he got North-South quick enough. Just a little plug there for TGII.

The way Ray runs reminds me of Teddy...they have nearly identical running styles. Although Teddy may be faster at top-speed, it looks like Ray accelerates faster and cuts sharper.

I think Ginn's acceleration is what made him so elite. I think a decent amount of players in cfb shared the same caliber top-end speed but Ginn reached it faster than anyone else. Small does seem to have sharper cuts, I agree.

I don't think you can compare the two yet.

Lets wait for Small to get a return TD or a 100 yard receiving game before we compare the two.

his stride looks very similiar to TGII.
:slappy: yeah, lets not compare the two..

Dunno...Harvin is pretty fast in pads.

Bo Jackson was silly fast too...almost gave up football and baseball in college to concentrate on Olympic sprinting.

Small can motor...but he isn't in that league yet.
Damn you. Harvin is, as is Hester in the NFL.. I never got to see Bo play outside of Tecmo Superbowl

I thought the opposite to be true. IIRC, Ginn's top end speed was what separated him and was virtually unmatched. It was always said that Gonzo was just as fast as Ginn in the 40, but in a 100 yd. sprint Ginn pulled away around the 40 yd. mark and it wasn't even close from that point on.

I believe Butch Reynolds also said Ginn sustained his top speed longer than anyone he had ever seen (on the football field).

I see Small as a hybrid of Ginn/Gonzo. He seems to accelerate very quickly ala Gonzo, but lacks Ginn's top end speed.

Thanks for altering my quote in your post to make a point. :wink2:

I originally said that the only thing I agree with in this entire thread regarding the TGII comparison is that they look similiar when they run.

It is not fair to compare anything else just yet (ie big play ability, cutting ability, accelleration, etc. Small doesn't have enough touches yet to compare the two)
