WR Ray Small (official thread)

I'm interested to see how Small's return helps our running game. With a great playmaker as a deep threat to compliment Robo, defenses will have to respect our passing game much more.

Good call. I'd like to see the Buckeyes throw deep several times in the first quarter. Tell Boeckman to get that ball out there. If the guy is covered, just throw it past him, out of bounds. Show Washington and all future opposition that they better respect Ohio State's deep play threat. Of course, if Ohio State bombs four deep passes, and fails miserably on all four of them, this plan will backfire. Completing one or two would help out, long term, with short passes and runs.

You need to go deep in more than just the first quarter. Future opponents watch film too, and if they know you only go deep early, they'll adjust accordingly.

The best example I ever saw was in the mid '80s, don't remember or care which year exactly. It was the season that Mich. State dominated. Earle Bruce went long on the first play of the game, post pattern to Everett Ross for 6. Then we ran to the short side of the field the rest of the day, and that TD was our only score. In spite of getting burned on the first play, MSU showed no respect at all for the deep ball because they new Earle would not go back to it.

1460 confirmed this morning that Ray will be used as a return-man this Saturday.

The Special Teams advantage just grew incrementally.

I was just about to post.. the article that someone else (Edit: it was osugrad21) found in CPD about the new Nike deal has something about Small returning punts, and will be one of five receivers they hope to play against Washington.

cleveland.com: Everything Cleveland

The last paragraph is about Ray Small.
