WR Ray Small (official thread)

Hopefully he can get back on his feet ASAP...Why bring Torrence into WR why not let one of the young guns step up and fill that spot?

The article I posted above has Bollman quoted saying that Torrence wasn't moved because of Small's injury. The coaches see Torrence on offense right now but it's possible he could move back to corner it seems.

Small likely to miss opener
By Doug Harris

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State sophomore receiver Ray Small is sidelined with an ankle injury and may not be back in time for the season-opener against Youngstown State on Sept. 1.

Small, who was expected to see action in the Buckeyes' three-receiver formations, had eight catches for 68 yards as a true freshman last season.

"I think we'll be conservative bringing him back," OSU offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said. "But it's not like he's going to miss half the year or anything like that. We'll have him back."

Senior Curtis Terry, who is part of a six-player rotation at linebacker, also has missed practice because of an ankle injury.

"I don't think there's really anything too serious," Bollman said of the injuries. "People are missing a little while here and there ? nothing that's going to keep anyone out for a super long, long time."

Small ailing
Receiver Ray Small, who was expected to be the Buckeyes' punt and kick returner, sat out the kick scrimmage with a sprained ankle.
Tressel said Small is healing, but the Buckeyes don't plan to have him for their opener.

OSU notebook: Small set to return this week

Wednesday, September 5, 2007 3:25 AM
By Ken Gordon

The Columbus Dispatch

Receiver Ray Small practiced extensively yesterday and should return this week from a high ankle sprain that kept him out of the opener.

Small was Ohio State's No. 3 receiver and top punt returner in spring practice before suffering the injury Aug. 11. He sat out against Youngstown State but should play Saturday against Akron.
"He took quite a few reps today, so we're excited about where he is right now," quarterback Todd Boeckman said.

Awesome! I was starting to get nervous about Ray's injury. Based on the # of Fresh. WRs that played last week, I was beginning to think it might be worse than was being let on.

I'm excited to see what he can do both on O and Special Teams.

As of last week, Ray was going to be held out of this game...he has been fine and if last week was a B10 game, he would have played.

This early return makes me wonder if there is a concern somewhere else.

Hopefully its a simple case of the kid feeling a lot better and the staff wanting to get him some game reps before Washington.

The conspiracy side of me thinks maybe they see a serious deficency in the run game along with UW looking a lot better on film thus wanting to get as much added to the offense as possible.

Lets hope its just plain old option 1.

A quote about Small from Hartline, after yesterday's practice.

Brian Hartline, sophomore wide receiver

On the condition of Ray Small, wide receiver

"He did more in practice today. He was still limited some, but he doesn't wear a colored jersey anymore. He wore a brace on his ankle."

Answered via email:

Small is getting more and more reps now, he still isn't taking every rep (they are trying to ease him back as slow as possible), but look for him to get into the Akron game. Small has been ready for over a week now, but they were really trying to keep him out to make sure the high ankle sprain didnt bother him the whole year. There is nothing else going on with that situation...

After watching JT the past six years, I think there is a method behind his madness ref the running game and giving Todd some game experience. I think you'll see the running game return against Akron, with a vengence. However, I'll say the offensive line needs to start playing some in-your-face football. they looked truly uninspired against YSU. Have faith those of little faith.
