WR Julian Fleming (transfer to Ped)

Kudos to Julian for showing some real toughness in the Rose Bowl after separating his shoulder and coming back into the game. Really hoping for a healthy and productive 2022 for him.
Julian has shown lots of toughness throughout his career. He took a big step with the football in that bowl game. He may not have splashed the headlines like Marvin and Jaxon but that was a noticeable step forward as a pass catcher after grinding in the shadows during some injuries.

Between COVID-19 and multiple injury setbacks, the five-star recruit and No. 1 wideout in the class of 2020 hasn’t yet had a full spring on the field during his tenure at Ohio State. Finally “110 percent” healthy during the spring for the first time as a college football player, the moment has arrived for Fleming to take meaningful strides toward tapping into his sky-high potential this offseason.

“This is my actual first real spring ball, especially coming through everything,” Fleming said after the Buckeyes’ second spring practice on March 10. “So I mean, it's been a steady grind and I've changed a lot of my habits, inside and outside of the Woody. Just trying to constantly make sure my body's right and maintain it and avoid those little injuries that I've had. So it's been good though. I feel better than I ever have.”

There was one notable absence in the form of former five-star wide receiver Julian Fleming. He did not make an appearance despite the heavy rotation at the wideout spot.

“It was just a precaution,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “He was kind of day to day and we just decided it wasn’t worth putting him in the game today.”

“We wanted to get (Jaxon) Smith-Njigba and Trey (Henderson) and a few guys out of the game early on,” Day said. “I think Emeka (Egbuka) had a very good spring. I think Julian (Fleming) had a very good spring. Marvin (Harrison Jr.) has been very strong. Xavier Johnson has been really good for us as well.”

2023 NFL Draft: 10 highest-rated WR prospects entering college football season, per Lindy's

9. JULIAN FLEMING, OHIO STATE
10564361.jpg

Ohio State's wide receiver room is so talented this season, not enough balls to go around is the only thing holding Julian Fleming back from a potential banner year when you consider fellow future NFL Draft picks Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Marvin Harrison Jr. and others all in the same position group. Ohio State wide receiver coach Brian Hartline is expecting an impact season out of former top prospect Fleming, who arrived at Ohio State as a five-star signee a couple of cycles ago.

"I think it’s just natural progression," Hartline said last month. "I think he did a great job, you know, he’s big, strong fast athlete and really evolving into a receiver. And he’s done a great job with that. I think that there’s always places we’re going to keep enhancing, he knows that. But like, I think he’s taking all the necessary steps and I’m really pleased with where he’s at."

While the first two years of Julian Fleming’s Ohio State career haven’t lived up to expectations, momentum finally appears to be on his side entering his third season as a Buckeye.

Fleming was one of seven players named by Ohio State last week as an Iron Buckeye, an honor bestowed upon the players who show “unquestionable training dedication, determination, discipline, toughness, leadership and grind” during offseason workouts. While that doesn’t guarantee Fleming will play a big role on the field this season, Ryan Day said Thursday that players who have earned that honor in past years have often gone on to make a big impact in games.

“When you look at the guys who have had those recognitions, the carryover on the field has been tremendous,” Day said. “All the things that we ask you to do on the football field carry over to what (Mickey Marotti and his strength and conditioning staff) does in the offseason. So it certainly doesn't guarantee you anything, but it gives you one heck of a chance.”

FLEMING RUNNING WITH STARTERS
Julian Fleming has been drawing a lot of praise this summer, with Ryan Day saying last week that the third-year wide receiver has “had the best offseason he's had to this point,” and Thursday was another indication that Fleming could be on track for his long-awaited breakout season.

During 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills on Thursday, Fleming took all of the first-team reps at Z receiver, with Marvin Harrison Jr. starting at X receiver and Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the slot. Emeka Egbuka, who’s viewed as Fleming’s top competition for the third starting spot at receiver, spent Thursday’s practice with the second-team offense alongside with Xavier Johnson and Jayden Ballard.

Fleming, who also ran as a first-team gunner during punt team work, showed off his explosiveness as he turned multiple short passes into longer gains.

Running with the first team in one practice doesn’t guarantee that Fleming will be a starter once the actual games begin, but Thursday was an indicator that Fleming might have the inside track on a starting job right now. That said, Day said after practice that he expects the Buckeyes to rotate more often at the outside receiver positions this year than they did last year, when Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson played the vast majority of snaps.

“We're gonna let those guys rotate a little bit because they deserve to play,” Day said.
