WR Julian Fleming (transfer to Ped)

WR JULIAN FLEMING
Brian Hartline’s wide receiver room is so stacked with talent that even if the Buckeyes lost one of their potential starters, they’d probably be just fine. After all, the Ohio State pass attack got along just fine after the transfer of Jameson Williams a year ago. But if Julian Fleming lives up to his five-star billing as a junior, C.J. Stroud and company could operate in a capacity as of yet unforeseen at Ohio State.

Just as some were ready to write him off amid injuries and breakout performances from his peers, Fleming appears to be holding off Emeka Egbuka for a starting job at wideout this preseason. Perhaps the pair might alternate throughout the year, but Fleming’s status as an Iron Buckeye seems to confirm Ryan Day’s notion that he’s had his best offseason yet entering 2022.

That's a positive sign. Impressive if he's been able to hold off Emeka throughout Spring and Fall camps. Egbuka was my pick right after the Rose Bowl to be the next breakout star in that room. I still think he is going to have a tremendous year, but it looks as if it might be the ST's department where he'll have the most impact early on as he's got some other studs getting most of the targets at WR, including Flemming (if he can stay healthy????)

I mean even if he is the 4th guy technically, he should still be getting legit reps during the regular season and good opportunities shouldn’t he? I think starter is a bit more terminology than substance when it comes to the first 4-5 wideouts in this offense

Yeah, I think 3 and 4 will be pretty fluid and may swap game to game. We also may see 4 come in and get hot and stay in awhile longer. Huge, HUGE luxury. Imagine being the opposing team’s DB who’s got to cover Fleming/Egbuka and then has to cover a fresh Egbuka/Fleming. As good as JSN and Harrison will be, from a matchup perspective 3 & 4 may be where we pull away, even against the quality teams on the slate.

yeah, and my thought is they may be giving Flemming 1st crack at #3 bc of his time in the program and bc Emeka is presumed to be so highly involved in the ST's. Don't get me wrong.... they are both extremely talented and would surely be #1 or #2 in most programs across the country.

I was more or less excited that he seems to be the healthiest he's been while at OSU and they are at least planning for him to be a major weapon in the iffense this fall.

Talk about a match-up nightmare for opposing DC's.

Fleming could’ve easily left OSU and had a great year as a clear #1 WR like Jameson Williams, and he’s sticking it out in a ultra crowded, competitive room where they’re all used to being the alpha. Fleming could put up a solid year and get drafted, his size and strength would be coveted in the NFL.

Just got to stay healthy

Definitely laudable for him to stick it out and compete, although I think one wrinkle is he understands his health had kept him from the field, whereas I think Jameson Williams knew he was getting buried on the depth chart. No matter what I think if Julian stays healthy he will get a lot of looks, but I am curious to see if Fleming or Egbuka get more snaps...Egbuka is due for a JSN-esque breakout year imo but Egbuka and Fleming are two totally different WRs with different frames and skillsets, so I could see them getting equal PT.

I think it seems pretty apparent that JSN and Harrison Jr are #1 and #2 (respectively), with Fleming and Egbuka seemingly tied for #3. Seems like Ballard and X. Johnson will grab some PT as well, but the first 4 seem pretty entrenched. I am sort of rooting for Fleming to seize the #3 spot and have a huge year mostly because he has less time to do so than Egbuka and since what has held him back is injuries. Cheers to a big year Julian.

Ohio St. expects Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Julian Fleming to play

Ohio State expects preseason All-America selection Jaxon Smith-Njigba and fellow wide receiver Julian Fleming to play this week against Toledo.

Smith-Njigba, who led Ohio State with 1,606 receiving yards in 2021, suffered a hamstring injury early in the Sept. 3 opener against Notre Dame. He went through light warm-ups last week but did not play against Arkansas State. Fleming, who had 12 receptions last season, suffered an undisclosed injury late in training camp and has not played this season.

"He's further along than he was at this point last week," coach Ryan Day said of Smith-Njigba. "We're going to expect him to play this weekend, we'll see how this week goes, but we're going to only put him in the game if we feel 100% sure that he's ready to roll."

Day described Fleming's situation as similar to Smith-Njigba's. Fleming went through some warm-ups before the Arkansas State game.
