WR Julian Fleming (transfer to Ped)

What I know about Penn State after Week 1: Abdul Carter’s shaky day, Julian Fleming’s debut

3. Julian Fleming’s role will grow

One of Penn State’s most important transfer portal additions, the veteran receiver did not start and wasn’t even targeted. Is that a reason for concern? I don’t think so.

A good indicator of how the staff feels about any player is by looking at the snap counts. Harrison Wallace III and Liam Clifford started, with Wallace earning the target on half of Penn State’s 18 pass attempts. However, it was Fleming, not Clifford, whose 35 snaps tied with Wallace for the lead among the receivers.

Fleming’s willingness as a blocker is part of why I believe he’s going to have a significant role. No, he didn’t transfer in just to block, but when Penn State has more than 18 pass attempts in a game, he certainly should be in the mix. It’s important to also note that Evans played 31 snaps, third most among receivers, while Clifford logged 21. The only other receiver to take snaps with the offense was Tyler Johnson (5). Kaden Saunders didn’t record a snap on offense, but he did see the field after dealing with an injury this preseason, fielding all four punts as fair catches. I’m curious to see how his role evolves in the coming weeks.

Just sayin': I noticed in the box score that Fleming didn't have any catches so I wondered what happened.

So he’s exactly what he was here… a kid who blocks at WR.

Not exactly a great role

Ex-Ohio State football player Julian Fleming hasn't done well so far with his new team

In the offseason, Fleming decided to transfer elsewhere in pursuit of more playing time. You can't really blame him considering how good Jeremiah Smith already is. Fleming knew he wasn't going to get a lot of time, even with Marvin Harrison Jr. moving on to the NFL.

Fleming decided to transfer closer to home and head to Penn State. It's early in the season, but things have not gone well for him. In two games, he has just one catch for three yards. It's not like Penn State hasn't been scoring points either. They have put up 34 points in each of their first two games.

As much as I dislike Penn State, Fleming was an awesome dude while he was with the Buckeyes. Injuries robbed him of what could have been a stellar career. I hope he's able to put up better numbers in the final year of his career.

Fleming has appeared in 14 games for the Nittany Lions in 2024. He has 14 receptions this season for 176 yards and one touchdown. Aside from his touchdown total and games played, all of his numbers have dropped from his last year in Columbus.

His rankings among al Nittany Lions pass catchers are as follows:
  • Receptions: sixth (14)
  • Yards: sixth (176)
  • Touchdowns: tied for seventh (1)
  • Yards per game: seventh (12.57)
  • Receptions per game: seventh (1.0)
  • Yards per game: sixth (12.6)
.
.
continued
.
.
Whether Fleming’s choice turned out to be in his best interest remains to be seen, as the rest of the College Football Playoff has yet to play out and his draft stock is unknown. Regardless, the two sides will hope to meet again, as it would mean both Ohio State and Penn State have made the national title game.

Good decision for him to transfer, but he just transferred to the wrong place. If he wanted to go back to his home state, he should've went to a lower tier or smaller school, IMO. Because he needs to work on his game. He can't create separation, he finds it difficult to find holes in zone defenses and he is honestly closer to a blocking TE than he is a WR. I hope the best for him, and maybe another transfer is on the horizon if he has eligibility left.

He has no college eligibility left. He's been in college 5 years and is 24 years old. It's time for him to move on to life after college football and I doubt that he would make a NFL team. Hopefully he has a college degree that will lead to employment in his chosen career.

Looks like he did get his degree.
Earned his degree in human development and family studies from Ohio State in December 2023.
And no, the NFL is not in his future. Best of luck to him in adulthood
