WR Brian Robiskie (Official Thread)

A light turned on

Browns coach Eric Mangini always talks about how some receivers take longer than others to produce whenever he is asked about Brian Robiskie, who to date has nine catches. He caught seven passes last season.

Falcons receiver Roddy White, the 27th pick of the 2005 draft, was nothing special his first two years. He caught 29 passes as a rookie, 30 in 2006, then 83 in 2007.

White's success was enhanced in 2008, when the Falcons drafted quarterback Matt Ryan in the first round. White caught 88 passes in 2008, 85 the next year and he has 75 catches this season with six games to play.

No one is saying Robiskie or Mohamed Massaquoi will turn into Roddy White, but for two years reporters in Atlanta wondered whether White was worth a first-round draft pick.

Robiskie catching on
Second-year wideout has career game
November 29, 2010 - By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle

CLEVELAND - Jake Delhomme's return to quarterback for the Browns turned out to be good news for Brian Robiskie.

The second-year receiver has been a non-factor all season, but he came up with his best day as a pro Sunday with seven receptions for 50 yards in a 24-23 win over the Carolina Panthers. Robiskie entered the game with nine receptions for 81 yards.

Delhomme seems to feel comfortable with Robiskie, who hasn't contributed much in almost two seasons. Quarterbacks Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace liked to test other areas - particularly the tight ends - but Delhomme prefers throwing to Robiskie on slant routes.

"I come in every week and do what the coaches ask of me," Robiskie said. "Every ball that comes my way, I have to try to make a play on it."

Delhomme connected with Robiskie on a touchdown pass on the first series of the first preseason game, against the Green Bay Packers. The two often hooked up during practices in training camp.

The connection was derailed when Delhomme sprained an ankle in the second quarter of the first regular-season game. He started yesterday for the first time since suffering the injury.

"He's a guy that knows the offense," Robiskie said of Delhomme. "He's really going to work to find the open guy. I was fortunate to get open, and he found me a couple of times."

Browns wide receiver Brian Robiskie catches a pass in front of Carolina Panthers cornerback Richard Marshall during the first quarter of Sunday?s game.

BEREA ?

No Cleveland Brown is as hard to read as wide receiver Brian Robiskie.

It has been a combination of ?Robo?s? enigmatic production and unchanging demeanor.

If it was killing him to have caught 16 passes in the first 26 games since the Browns spent a second-round draft pick on him, it never showed.

If there was a party going on inside after he caught seven passes Sunday against Carolina ? he caught seven passes in all of 2009 ? there wasn?t the slightest trace on his face.

Well, maybe his slight smile stayed out a little longer, but that was it.

Here?s a look inside the locker room at Robiskie?s words, but not, one supposes, his head:

?I was just happy to get the win. I was happy to do what I could to help my team get a win, because at the end of the day, that is the only thing that matters.?

Browns-Dolphins: Robiskie looking to build on seven catches he made vs. Panthers

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. ? So, Brian Robiskie really can get open, catch the football and be a part of the Browns' offense.

All it took was the right quarterback to throw him the ball. What a discovery.

Robiskie caught seven passes from Jake Delhomme last Sunday when the Browns squeaked by Carolina, 24-23. Robiskie played a major role in the squeaking, even though the seven catches were for a grand total of 50 yards.

Delhomme will start today when the Browns play the Dolphins at 1 p.m. Delhomme and Robiskie working together again, and Joshua Cribbs shaking off a foot injury to be a major part of the offense as well as returning punts and kicks, will be critical for the Browns' chances of winning.

"We just try to spread the ball around as much as possible," Delhomme said. "I think the biggest thing is you try to take what the defense gives you.

"Brian did have a very good game (vs. Carolina), especially the last drive making some big catches like he did on some slant routes. He did have a good game along with certainly Mohamed (Massaquoi with four catches)."

Robo ? it isn't easy to keep a nickname while doing as little as Robiskie has done over two seasons ? caught two passes on the drive resulting in Phil Dawson's game-winning field goal. One was for 9 yards to the Panthers' 24. Two running plays gained nothing before Dawson nailed a 41-yard field goal to put the Browns on top.

"At the end of the day, it's all about winning," Robiskie said on Friday. "I don't know how many opportunities I'll get this week, but no matter what happens, you can't feel like you're not involved if you're not catching the ball. You know you're involved in the running game. You know you're involved in the passing game even if you're not catching passes.

Browns' Robiskie scores first NFL TD
December 20, 2010 - By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle

CINCINNATI - Maybe a Longhorn and a Buckeye can co-exist on a football field.

Brian Robiskie, a receiver from Ohio State, had his best day as a pro Sunday for the Cleveland Browns in a 19-17 loss to the Bengals. Robiskie, a second-round draft choice last year, had five receptions for 82 yards. He scored his first NFL touchdown on a 46-yard pass play from quarterback Colt McCoy, who played at the University of Texas.

Robiskie showed his athleticism on the touchdown pass. McCoy, stepping up in the pocket, lofted a pass near the left sideline. It appeared that Bengals defender Kelwan Ratliff was in position to break up or intercept the pass, but he was a second late.

Robiskie leaped high to pull down the ball. He had an easy jaunt into the end zone for a touchdown that reduced the score to the final margin with 2:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"Colt did a good job making a great throw," Robiskie said. "The line gave him some time, and he had a chance to see what the defense did. He made a great read and put it in a great spot."

Robiskie's touchdown memorable, insufficient
By Stephanie Storm, Marla Ridenour and Nate Ulrich
POSTED: Dec 19, 2010

CINCINNATI: Wide receiver Brian Robiskie will never forget his first touchdown catch in the NFL. It's just that the memory would be more enjoyable if the play had led to a win for the Browns.

Instead, the former Browns ball boy and Ohio State standout had to settle for his fourth-quarter, 46-yard touchdown reception from rookie quarterback Colt McCoy pulling the Browns close with 2:13 left before they fell 19-17 on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

''It would have felt a lot better if we won, I promise you'' said Robiskie, who had a career-high 82 receiving yards on five receptions. ''[But] Colt threw a great ball. He's been doing a great job with that two-minute offense, and I was trying to make a play for him. . . .It looked like it was cover 2 and [Keiwan Ratliff] tried to come over from his safety spot. Colt did a great job putting it in a place where he couldn't get to it.''

McCoy, whose 76 percent completion percentage was the highest by a Browns quarterback this season, shared the intricacies of what made the play work.

''They showed a pressure look,'' he said. ''Late in the game, I'd rather protect myself than throw a hot or a sight. So I changed the protection. They audibled out of their all-out blitz to a zone coverage with a safety over the top. The corner bit on the out route, and there's a hole right there. We haven't hit on that very much this year. But in a situation like that, we were able to capitalize on it.''

Have you seen enough?
Browns Blog
December 21, 2010 - Mike McLain

Browns fans generally want to see second-year receiver Brian Robiskie succeed, primarily because he's an Ohio State Buckeye.

Unfortunately, for Robiskie and the Browns, it's been a struggle. He had just seven receptions for 106 yards with no touchdowns in his rookie season last year. There have been signs of improvement this season as he's hauled in 25 passes for 240 yards. He had five receptions for 82 yards and his first career touchdown last Sunday against Cincinnati.

Is the improvement this year a sign that Robiskie has turned a corner and is own his way to what will be a successful career? The answer probably won't be known until sometime next season when he's close to the end of his third campaign.

Robiskie isn't considered a big-play receiver with blazing speed. He did have a successful career for the Buckeyes, which is why the Browns selected him high in the second round of the 2009 draft.

Robiskie's play has improved in recent weeks. Jake Delhomme targeted him several times a few weeks ago against the Carolina Panthers. Colt McCoy leaned on Robiskie last Sunday.

Receiver is a difficult position to break into quickly in the NFL. The defensive backs are bigger, faster asnd more physical than what receivers face in college. Many receivers never take the next step, whether it's because of fear of injury or simply the inability to create separation from talented cornerbacks.

I think that there could be a long-term role for Robiskie. He seems to be feeling more comfortable on crossing routes, which are throws that favor McCoy's accuracy. If Robiskie can occasionally get open deep, it would make him more of a threat.

With many decisions facing general manager Tom Heckert in the offseason, he has to decide if Robiskie will be part of the mix. There's no doubt that the offense needs a true number one receiver. If Robiskie isn't in the plan, Heckert might be looking for a couple of receivers in free agency and/or the draft.

Light brightens for Robiskie
Coach Mangini believes young receiver that coming into his own

BEREA: Browns wide receiver Brian Robiskie was planning to attend Kent State's basketball game Tuesday night before one of his brothers came to town.

But he wishes he'd seen what his former Ohio State position coach, Darrell Hazell, did at halftime when he was introduced as the new Kent State football coach. Hazell unbuttoned his suit coat and shirt and loosened his tie to reveal a T-shirt that read, ''Beat Akron.''

''I've never seen him with anything but a tucked-in button-up or a tucked-in jacket or something like that,'' Robiskie said. ''For him to take that off like that, that's a big deal.''

Robiskie said he spoke to Hazell after Monday afternoon's news conference in Kent. Hazell, 46, Ohio State's assistant head coach, will succeed Doug Martin after the Buckeyes face Arkansas in the Jan. 4 Sugar Bowl.

''He sounded fired up about it, so I was excited for him,'' Robiskie said. ''He's a great coach and has shown that with all the guys he had over the years. He's a great man and I learned a lot from him. . . . He impresses you with the kind of person he is and the kind of coach he is.''

Browns getting production from wide receiver Brian Robiskie
Published: Thursday, December 23, 2010
By JEFF SCHUDEL
[email protected]

Feel-good stories are as rare as touchdowns for the Browns at this point of the season, but one of them involves Brian Robiskie, who suddenly has become a focal point of the offense.

Too little too late for this season with only two games remaining, perhaps, but the former Ohio State Buckeye by way of Chagrin Falls High School has 15 catches in his last four games. He scored his first NFL touchdown last Sunday on a 46-yard pass play with Colt McCoy at quarterback and could add to his surge Sunday when the Browns host the Ravens.

Robiskie has worked hard since the day he was drafted in the second round of the 2009 draft. He never complained when he was inexplicably banished to the inactive list five times last season. Finally, that diligence is paying off.

"I don't really think the light has been off," Coach Eric Mangini said before practice Wednesday. "I just think it's had a chance to shine a little bit brighter. Sometimes that's the case. You just don't know. It's hard to predict when things start clicking for a guy."

Browns wide receiver Brian Robiskie celebrates a 29-yard touchdown catch against the Baltimore Ravens in the first quarter of Sunday's game in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND ?

In a season growing more bitter by the loss, Browns fans still paying enough attention to care grope for hope.

Some fans trust that Mike Holmgren soon will have a new coaching staff in place. Others pick through the rubble of a 5-10 season for evidence of breakthrough players.

Something Jake Delhomme said in the heat of training camp played out in Sunday?s 20-10 loss to the Ravens.

One of those 90-and-muggy August practices had just ended when Delhomme began raving about Brian Robiskie.

People don?t realize how good this kid is at adjusting to the ball when it is in the air, the old quarterback said.

Then Robiskie went back into the cave where he lived as a 2009 rookie.

Through 10 regular-season games, the 36th pick of the 2009 draft caught nine passes for 81 yards.

On Sunday, however, the former Ohio State Buckeye made one of the best touchdown catches you?ll ever see at the end of a once-in-a-blue-moon gadget.

Colt McCoy went to the bench for a play, replaced by Seneca Wallace. After a complicated pre-snap shift, Wallace made a simple handoff to Peyton Hillis, who pitched to wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, who took a few steps, straightened up, and let fly a pass to the corner of the end zone. Cornerback Chris Carr seemed to have the best chance at the high floater. Robiskie took a hustling, arcing path to the ball, while Carr dropped out of the picture. Even then, the ball seemed uncatchable, even if it hadn?t been such a cold day.

Robiskie dove. His arms were nearly on the ground when he looked the ball into his outstretched palms. He quickly curled it into his right bicep and tucked it into his body as he thudded in front of the Dawg Pound.

?Mo did a great job putting it outside and giving me a chance to catch it,? Robiskie said.

It was a touchdown.

Cleveland Browns GM says Browns WR Brian Robiskie's future with team is bright

The future looks bright for Brian Robiskie in the West Coast offense.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Browns General Manager Tom Heckert thinks receiver Brian Robiskie, who came on strong at the end of last season, is a great fit for the new West Coast offense.

"I think Brian's got a great future for us, I really do,'' said Heckert. "He can catch the football, he's a bigger guy, I think he fits very, very well in what we're doing offensively. We run a lot of slants and shallow crossing routes and I think he's very, very good at that. I think he's going to be good for us.''

Heckert acknowledged the team saw progress with Robiskie, a second-round pick in 2009, as the season wore on. Of course, the receivers weren't involved in the offense as much as they will be in the new scheme.

"He didn't catch a ton of balls (29 for 310 yards and three TDs), but we saw improvement and I think he's got a chance to be a good player, I really do,'' said Heckert.

Heckert took exception to NFL Network's Mike Lombardi saying the Browns and Ravens are two of the slowest teams in the NFL receiver-wise.

"I don't think we have one blazing guy, but I don't think our receivers are slow by any stretch, I really don't," he said. "Both of those guys came out and ran pretty well. I don't know if we have a complete burner, but I don't see us as a slow wide receiver group.''

Heckert backs Robiskie

Former Ohio State receiver Brian Robiskie was drafted by Cleveland in the second round of the 2009 draft. Through two years, he has 36 catches for 416 yards and three touchdowns.

Still, Browns general manager Tom Heckert spoke highly of him yesterday.

"I think Brian has got a bright future for us," Heckert said. "Obviously, he can catch the football. He's a bigger guy (6 feet 3), and I think he fits very, very well into what we're doing offensively. We run a lot of slants and shallow crossing routes, and I think he's very, very good at that. So I think he's going to be good for us."

Browns' big plans

Browns wide receiver Brian Robiskie did not reach the 30-catch plateau in either of his first two NFL seasons, but General Manager Tom Heckert isn't worried about Robiskie's future. Actually, Heckert is excited.

''I think Brian's got a great future for us, I really do,'' Heckert said. ''He can catch the football. He's a bigger guy. I think he fits very, very well in what we're doing offensively. We run a lot of slants and shallow crossing routes, and I think he's very, very good at that.''

Browns coach Pat Shurmur said receivers in his West Coast system need to be able to run good slant routes.

''You've got a chance to throw the ball in three steps, get the ball to the receiver quickly and then really have a chance to really have a big gain if you can catch and run with it,'' Shurmur said.

The 6-3, 209-pound Robiskie, a former Ohio State standout, had 29 catches for 310 yards and three touchdowns last season. As a rookie, he had seven catches for 106 yards without scoring.

''He didn't catch a ton of balls,'' Heckert said. ''But we saw improvement, and I think he's got a chance to be a good player.''

In their first two seasons combined, Massaquoi and Robiskie caught a total of 106 passes and eight TDs. For comparison's sake, two players caught more passes last season alone -- Atlanta's Roddy White with 115 and Indianapolis' Reggie Wayne with 111. What's more, White (whose position coach is Robiskie's dad, Terry) caught 10 TD passes in 2010 -- two more than the Browns duo had in their first two years combined.

"I think myself, Colt and all of the receivers are definitely going to flourish in this offense," said Robiskie at the camp. "Coming off the past couple of years, I think it will be great for us."

Massaquoi and Robiskie didn't get many chances the past two years, but they know that's about to change.

"We're all looking forward to showing what we're capable of," said Robiskie, who caught a TD pass in each of the final three games last season.

The two are also glad to have a new second-round receiver in the fold in Greg Little, the 59th overall pick out of North Carolina. On draft day, Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Little has a chance to become the Browns' No. 1 receiver.

"I think it just helps when a guy comes in and he's very talented," said Massaquoi. "I've known Greg forever, since high school, and competition makes everybody better. We all push each other and we all get better."

Robiskie is confident the Browns don't need a veteran receiver to complete them.

"With this offense and the right opportunities, we'll be just fine," he said. "We all believe we can be a good receiving corps."

Robiskie catches on in Browns camp
By NATE ULRICH - Akron Beacon Journal

BEREA, Ohio -- As practice wrapped up this week, Cleveland Browns wide receivers ran routes into the end zone and caught high-arcing passes.

After Brian Robiskie secured a reception, his momentum carried him under the press tent. Browns coach Pat Shurmur's news conference was briefly interrupted by the click-clack sound of Robiskie's cleats smacking asphalt.

"Hey, Robo, how you doin'?" Shurmur said with a laugh as Robiskie turned to exit the interview area. "Nice catch."

It wasn't the only time Robiskie has caught his new coach's eye this summer. He has quietly performed well throughout training camp.

"I would say Robiskie has been very steady," Shurmur said Wednesday during his post-practice chat with reporters, this time without a cameo from Robiskie. "You can say that a lot about what he is. He's just a steady guy in terms of his personality, his performance, being on time and doing the right thing. He's had a steady camp, and I think that speaks well to him."

Robiskie, 23, has caught virtually everything thrown his way since camp started. During an 11-on-11 session in the Browns' most recent practice, he sneaked behind coverage in the middle of the field, hauled in a pass from quarterback Colt McCoy and ran untouched toward the end zone.

Cleveland Browns receiver Brian Robiskie eager to shoulder a bigger load in offense

BEREA, Ohio ? Browns receiver Brian Robiskie was working his way through the autograph seekers lined up after practice one day last week when a tiny hand stretched through the crowd and poked him in his muscled shoulder.

"Are those your shoulder pads?" wide-eyed Levi Springer Brown Jr., 4, asked.

Robiskie laughed. "No, those are my shoulders," he said.

The little boy was undaunted.

"Can I see your shoulder pads?"

Robiskie sent a runner back to the locker room for them and then draped them over the tot's shoulders to the delight of his 6-year-old sister Lacharia.

"Can I have them?" the boy asked.

"If you take them, I'll have nothing to play with," Robiskie told him.

With Robiskie shouldering a bigger role in the Browns' new West Coast offense, he'll definitely need those pads, according to Browns coach Pat Shurmur.

"I like Brian," Shurmur said. "I think he has a chance to be very successful for us."

The third-year pro out of Chagrin Falls High School and Ohio State is listed No. 1 on the depth chart at one of the receiver spots (Josh Cribbs is No. 1 at the other receiver spot while Mohamed Massaquoi recovers from a foot injury) and hopes to improve on last season's 29 catches for 310 yards and three touchdowns. Those 29 receptions were fifth best on the team last season, behind Massaquoi's 36.
