WR Brian Robiskie (Official Thread)

At the start of his remarks to the media, Mangini singled-out receiver Brian Robiskie as having a good start to the OTA season. Afterwards, Robiskie expressed excitement about the coming season. Not necessarily because he expects a breakout year after suffering through a seven-catch rookie season, either. Robiskie, who is all about team, said he's excited for the 2010 season because of the team's four-game winning streak at the end of last year. He also admitted the addition of veteran QBs Delhomme and Seneca Wallace will benefit the young receiving corps.

Mangini says Robiskie?s progress stands out
Filed by Scott Petrak May 28th, 2010 in Browns Notes.

BEREA ? A year later, Brian Robiskie may finally be what many experts declared before the Browns drafted him with the 36th pick.

Ready to contribute in the NFL.

robiskie.jpg

Robiskie was widely billed as the most NFL-ready receiver in the 2009 draft class. He started 32 games at Ohio State with 127 catches, 1,866 yards and 24 touchdowns. His dad, Terry, played running back in the NFL and is a longtime receivers coach, including with the Browns.

But Robiskie never made an impact ? or the slightest ripple ? as a rookie. He made one start and was inac*tive for five games. He caught just seven passes for 106 yards and no touchdowns.

That?s the backdrop for coach Eric Mangini?s unsolicited com*ments Thursday morning before practice, as the Browns wrapped up their second week of organized team activities.

?So far Brian Robiskie has had an outstanding camp,? Mangini said. ?He?s showed up quite a bit.

?He?s running good routes and made some big plays pretty much every day.?

Robiskie (6-foot-3, 209 pounds) lined up with the first team in three-receiver sets Thursday, joining Mohamed Massaquoi and Chansi Stuckey. Robiskie took Mangini?s comments in stride.

?I don?t think too much is different,? he said. ?I?m trying to work hard, I?m trying to get better every day. I?m excited about my opportunity to help us win some games this year.?

Robiskie didn?t want to spend much time reflecting on his lost season. Who can blame him?

?I don?t know what it was last year,? he said. ?But for me, last year was last year. I?ve moved on.

?I?m excited about this year. I?m excited about what I can do, I?m excited about our team.?

Part of keeping a positive outlook was not staring at the stat sheet.

?I didn?t get caught up in, ?Aw, I caught seven balls,?? he said. ?I looked at the progression I made.? The strides have been more obvious in the offseason.

?That?s one guy that surprised me and surprised a lot of guys with him stepping up and really coming into his own,? receiver Joshua Cribbs said.

?I?d like to think I?ve definitely grown,? Robiskie said. ?I?d like to think we?re a better team and I can keep getting better.?

Browns receiver Brian Robiskie didn't make an impression as a rookie, but the coaches have taken notice of his improvement in the off-season.

BEREA, Ohio ? Without being asked, Browns coach Eric Mangini singled out Brian Robiskie on Thursday as having "an outstanding" off-season camp.

This might not be the career watershed Robiskie envisioned when he was drafted in the second round a year ago to play for the team he once served as a ball boy while his father coached receivers.

New season, new Robiskie

BEREA: Browns coach Eric Mangini's praise was so far removed from anything he said last year about rookie receiver Brian Robiskie that it was almost startling.

During his opening remarks before the organized team activities last Thursday, Mangini brought up the 36th pick in the 2009 draft unsolicited. Robiskie, an Ohio State product from Chagrin Falls, caught just seven passes for 106 yards and spent five games on the inactive list, only one of those injury-related.

''There have been some guys having a really good camp. I thought so far, Brian Robiskie has had an outstanding camp,'' Mangini said. ''He's showed up quite a bit.''

In Mangini terminology, ''showed up'' means making big plays, not just trotting onto the practice field.

''I think it's a lot like quite a few of the younger guys,'' Mangini said. ''It's not, 'Where am I? What am I doing?' It's, 'I remember this. I remember the technique that I have to do.' You can start to develop it more and you can start to play faster because you're not thinking and processing. He's running good routes and made some big plays pretty much every day.''

Robiskie said he didn't do anything differently this offseason, merely studied some things he thought he could improve. He has worked out with fellow receivers Mohamed Massaquoi and Chansi Stuckey ? ''guys who have been here day in and day out,'' he said ? and the Browns' new starting quarterback, Jake Delhomme.

He said the receiving corps realizes it must develop chemistry with Delhomme, which was missing last season with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, now with the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos, respectively.

''All the receivers, we tried to build a rapport with him,'' Robiskie said of Delhomme. ''Between watching film and coming out to practice, listening to our coaches. . . .That's one of the most important things with the quarterback and the receiver, just the chemistry between them.''

As for last year, Robiskie said he didn't get down on himself, even though four of his catches for 69 yards came from Quinn against the San Diego Chargers on Dec. 6, leaving him with three receptions in nine other games played.

''I didn't get caught up in, 'Aw, I caught seven balls,' up and down [active and inactive] through the season,'' Robiskie said. ''I looked at the progression I made. I'd like to think I've definitely grown.

''I don't think there was any one part of my game I could single out, say, 'This is what I needed to do.' [There were] progressions in my run blocking, progression in my route running, understanding the system. I think having a year under my belt will really help.''

Big Question: Is Robiskie ready?
June, 1, 2010 Jun

Is Cleveland Browns receiver Brian Robiskie ready to start in his second year?

Brian Robiskie caught just seven passes during his rookie season in 2009.

The opportunity for playing time has never been more wide open for Robiskie. The Browns are in search of another starting-caliber receiver opposite Mohamed Massaquoi, and Cleveland is hoping Robiskie develops into that player this season.

Like Massaquoi, Robiskie was taken in the second round in 2009. But unlike Massaquoi, Robiskie didn't show much in his rookie year. The former Ohio State product struggled and barely saw the field until late in the season. Robiskie finished the year with only seven catches for 106 yards.

But growth for Robiskie is already evident this year in offseason workouts. He has been impressive early and is showing the ability to make plays at the next level. Cleveland is hoping Robiskie can carry that momentum into training camp and eventually earn a significant role in the offense this summer.

A possible starting group of Massaquoi and Robiskie could potentially be the youngest receiver tandem in the NFL this season. Veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme should help develop these inexperienced players, but it will be a work in progress.

Robiskie stays hot

Brian Robiskie lined up with the first-team offense in practice Friday afternoon. He has been one of the stars of the spring. It has been reported before, but is worth repeating. He looks like a different player from a year ago when he caught only seven passes.

?I think Robo is having a great camp,? Coach Eric Mangini said. ?Since we?ve started OTAs, he has done a really nice job and I think he feels a lot more comfortable with the information. He?s not (just) learning the plays; now he?s getting the feel for how to run the routes. One of the things that we really liked about him at Ohio State was how precise he was, how detailed he was and I?m really happy to see the progress that he has made. I?m excited to see him move into the preseason.?

Robiskie made the play of the day when he caught a pass in the end zone from Jake Delhomme during a seven-on-seven drill. There are no defensive or offensive linemen in seven-on-seven.

Delhomme, standing at the 15-yard line, had to throw the ball over cornerback Sheldon Brown, who had tight coverage on Robiskie. Robiskie caught the ball inches from the left boundary in the end zone and managed to control the ball and keep his feet in bounds.

The emergence of Brian Robiskie as a legitimate target in the passing game may have been the most important discovery of the Browns' off-season training camps, says Terry Pluto.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There's never really an end to the football season, right? So among other things, Terry's Talkin' ...

About the Browns ...

1. If the Browns were to give an award for an MVP of the different minicamps, receiver Brian Robiskie would be the winner. As one Browns coach said: "He started strong, and then got better. He never let up. He's made a huge jump." The Browns say Robiskie now "runs" the pass routes, rather than going through them "robotically," as he did his rookie season. He earned the respect of veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme, who told the coaches how Robiskie is "exactly where he should be at exactly the right time."

2. The Browns believe Robiskie will continue to be effective once real football begins with blocking and tackling. Robiskie is not a pure speed receiver. His quickness is above average, but he also has the strength to fight off defensive backs and create room to get open. Some "track guys" look good in the summer, then fade once they are physically challenged in the fall. That should not be the case with the Ohio State product.

3. Robiskie made tremendous progress between his freshman season (only one reception) and his sophomore year, when he emerged as a starter and caught 29 passes for the Buckeyes. Robiskie caught only seven passes as a rookie, and the Browns now see the player they hoped for when picking him in the second round in 2009.

?Shocked by Robo?

Jake Delhomme raves about Brian Robiskie?s knack for reading the ball in the air and adjusting his body and feet into perfect position.

The latest example came at the expense of cornerback DeAngelo Smith early in Sunday?s practice. On a 25-yard pass into the end zone, Smith seemed to have tight coverage on Robiskie until some fancy footwork lost the cornerback and took Robiskie right to the ball.

Smith reacted late, getting there only in time to push Robiskie as the latter secured a ?touchdown? catch. Robiskie fell and rolled as gently as he could on the sun-baked grass.

Throughout the practice, snippets of a growing rapport between Robiskie and Delhomme were evident. Part of it is Robiskie?s sixth sense for adjusting to the ball once it is in the air.

Delhomme said he had no idea Robiskie was so good at this when he first started working with him.

?I was shocked,? he said.

He?s catching on: Robiskie looks good, set to put 2009 behind him

Browns wide receiver Brian Robiskie catches a pass in Berea on Sunday. The former Ohio State star has looked great through the first three days of training camp. (AP photo.)

BEREA ? In olden times ? like five years ago ? big plays in a training camp practice were logged in a reporter?s notebook. The best made it into the following day?s newspaper.

In 2010, anything worth mentioning ? and plenty that isn?t ? is Tweeted or blogged about immediately.

No matter the medium, receiver Brian Robiskie has been getting his name out there with a series of notewor*thy catches. After three days, he is a front-runner for MVP of training camp and one of the biggest reasons for optimism this season.

The Monday morning prac*tice was no exception as Robiskie made three plays that demanded chronicling.

He started with a nice grab of a Jake Delhomme pass down the left sideline with Sheldon Brown in coverage. He followed with a crossing route for a touchdown versus rookie safety T.J. Ward, then showed good hands and athleticism by coming down with the ball on a fade route against tight cover*age from Mike Adams.

All while working exclusively with the first-team offense, opposite Mohamed Mas*saquoi. That?s quite a leap for a guy who caught a total of seven passes as a rookie and made one start in 11 games.

?Obviously that?s your job as a receiver, to make plays,? Robiskie said. ?Whenever the quarterbacks give you an opportunity, you want to help them out. That?s our job, so you get excited about it.?

Robiskie downplayed the notion he?s a different player this season.

?For me, it just feels like I?m continuing to progress and I think that?s all I wanted to do,? he said. ?It?s just another season.?

Robiskie has new look for 2010
By MIKE McLAIN Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: August 3, 2010

BEREA - The first sign that offseason optimism surrounding receiver Brian Robiskie is for real occurred during the Monday morning practice.

Robiskie, who had just seven receptions in his rookie season of 2009, hauled in two touchdown passes from quarterback Jake Delhomme. Robiskie isn't ready to announce that last season was a fluke, but he's grateful for every good day on the practice field.

"It feels good, but it's still early and we have a long way to go. Everybody knows that," Robiskie said. "The big thing for us is to get off on the right foot and continue to make progress. I think we're doing that."

Robiskie kept busy during the offseason in preparation for an important training camp. He was a high second-round draft choice last year, and it's time to start producing.

"There weren't any one or two things they stressed to me," Robiskie said. "It was just take the offseason and get better and do the little things, watch some film and come out and work with the quarterbacks."

Mangini singled out Robiskie for praise during the minicamp in June. He has to like what he's seen of the receiver in the early stages of camp.

"It just happens at different times to different people," Mangini said. "You wish there was one thing you could do and say, 'if we follow this pattern right here that this rookie will develop in this progression.' It's not like that. Sometimes, it takes guys a year to get a sense of the system."

Browns WR Robiskie confident in second pro camp

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -Brian Robiskie believes finding a comfort zone at the Cleveland Browns' training camp can help get him into the end zone, too.

The second-year wide receiver from Ohio State did both Wednesday. He looked perfectly at ease grabbing a 45-yard touchdown pass from new quarterback Jake Delhomme to finish the first practice of two-a-day drills performed in high humidity.

"It feels great,'' Robiskie said, sweat still dripping off his face after 15 minutes of signing autographs following the two-hour workout. "That was our 2-minute drill. You score, it's over. That's the way you always want to end.''

Robiskie faked left, ran right and got open in the corner. He held off a late challenge from defensive back Mike Adams and made a nifty over-the-shoulder catch.

"It will be good to watch that one on film,'' Robiskie said. "More importantly, I want to look at three or four plays I didn't get right. I've got to see what went wrong, go back out and do it right.''

BEREA, Ohio - Twenty minutes after practice and Brian Robiskie is still on the field.

Most of his teammates have headed to the locker room, but Robiskie is busy signing autographs. As Robiskie casually jogs over to the sidelines, fans cheer, clap and shout.

They push and squirm, trying to get the best spot to ensure a piece of signed memorabilia. Robiskie makes his way down the line, signing everything in sight, and striking up some small talk with the kids standing in admiration.

?I?ll be right back,? Robiskie says after working through the crowd.

He turns and heads to the locker room with a sense of urgency. A few moments later, he returns. He has a few pairs of extra gloves for some young fans, giving them a souvenir to remember.

Robiskie knows what it feels like to be a kid standing on that side of the rope, watching your idols work.

?Being an Ohio guy, going to high school, going to college in Ohio, and having the opportunity to come back here and play for the Browns, you can see the support from all of the Ohio fans,? said Robiskie, a Chagrin Falls native. ?It?s very appreciated.?

BEREA ? Jake Delhomme was talking to a group of reporters after the first practice of training camp this summer when he was asked how Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi can help the offense this season.

Massaquoi led the Browns with 34 catches in 2009. He looks smooth and more confident in his second training camp.

Delhomme wasn?t here last year for Robiskie?s weird rookie season when the former Buckeye caught only seven passes. Four of those catches were made in one game.

?I?m watching Brian Robiskie right now catching balls 30 minutes after practice,? Delhomme said while pointing to the far field of the training complex ?These guys get it. They want to be good.

?It?s always hard for a rookie wide receiver to come in and do well. You just never know when that time comes. When I was with Carolina, Steve Smith was not a starting wide receiver the first two years. He started his third year and came on the scene.?
