WR Brian Robiskie (Official Thread)

Browns notes: Progress a slow process for Robiskie
Filed by Scott Petrak November 26th, 2009 in Sports.

BEREA - Rookie receiver Brian Robiskie experienced a wide range of emotions Sunday as he sat on the bench in a Browns T-shirt. The offense scored a season-high 37 points, but Robiskie was inactive for the third time.

?When you see your teammates making big plays and you see them executing on things that we?ve done, you?re excited for them,? he said Wednesday. ?But it?s painful at the same time because you?re not out there helping them, not out there doing it with them, not out there helping the team.?

Robiskie was billed as the draft?s most NFL-ready receiver when he was picked in the second round, No. 36 overall. He had a solid four-year career at Ohio State, and his dad, Terry, is a former NFL player and longtime coach.

But Brian has been unable to get anything going. He was inactive Weeks 2 and 3, started one game and has one catch for 23 yards. Meanwhile, fellow second-round pick Mohamed Massaquoi established himself as a starter, and Robiskie lost time to unheralded slot receivers Mike Furrey and Chansi Stuckey.

?As a player I just have to go with it,? he said. ?I?m just trying to get better. The opportunities that I get on Sunday and during the week, I?m just trying to make the most of them.?

Robiskie has discussed his role with the coaches and has been told to keep working hard. He felt he made strides during the six-game stretch he was active.

?I definitely feel like I?ve been making a lot of progress over the past couple weeks, and a lot of that has just come from being out there on Sunday and playing,? he said. ?I think being on the field is when you definitely learn the most.?

Coach Eric Mangini said it?s not a source of disappointment that Robiskie and rookie linebacker David Veikune (No. 52) were inactive and have had no impact. Veikune doesn?t have a tackle.

?I don?t really look at it that way,? Mangini said. ?I look at it as bringing the guys that do the best job during that week and give us the best chance to win. They?re live all during the week. Whoever makes the best case during practice will be up.?

He said every rookie develops at his own pace.

?Some guys hit really quickly. Some guys it takes awhile,? Mangini said. ?Brian?s production, that needs to improve. There?s no doubt about it. He realizes that and that?s something that he?s working at.?

Hey, Tony: What do YOU think is the reason Brian Robiskie is sitting on the pines? From what I saw at Ohio State he had great hands and ran great routes. Who are the position coaches that supposedly teach players how to get open and catch the ball? Who coaches them on tackling? Are these guys on staff? -- Don Pesich, Worthington, Ohio

Hey, Don: I've heard different reasons but none seems plausible on their own. Such as: Mangini was put off by Robiskie signing sponsorship deals in training camp before he had proven anything. Another one is that Mangini considered Robiskie's father, Terry, a driving force in the controversy surrounding the 10-hour bus trip to Mangini's football camp in Hartford, Conn. Another one is that Robiskie's transition to the pro game has just been a struggle. I don't know if any or all of these factors are contributing. These are just the reasons I've heard.

Robiskie sits again
Browns rookie receiver Brian Robiskie was a healthy inactive for the second straight week and fourth time in 11 games. Robiskie, the No. 36 pick out of Ohio State in April, has one catch.

Jake Allen, who was claimed off waivers from Green Bay on Nov. 17, was active for the first time with the Browns and played a few snaps. Quinn looked for him on a deep out, but the ball was thrown too high.

Allen, a 6-foot-4, 196-pounder from Mississippi College, was undrafted in 2008 and signed by Green Bay. He spent last year on the Packers practice squad and played in one game this year with no stats.

It's bullshit at this point - I understand we dont really have a QB to get him the ball, and he's still young, but for christ sake give them kid some PT and let me feel his way into the system and calls.

What more do you have to lose?

I agree it is unfair to have such high expectations that players know their assignments. Just let them go out there after not demonstrating that they're the best for the job after practices and I'm sure they'll just figure it out.

I think its crazy you guys think its Maginis fault Robiskie hasn't seen more time. Even the worst coach in the NFL try and get their best players on the field and you have to show up in practice before you get in the games. And the games he's been in he hasn't exactly showed up either. The browns sucking is on Mangini, individual players being inactive because they're not ready yet is not. Give him time.

Uh no it isn't. He expects them to play like the vets. That's unrealistic. There have been numerous issues with Mangini in the past. Even the unmitigated disaster of Gholston that Ryan said he had to start from scratch on, despite Gholston's shortcomings. Mangini is not a good coach for rooks. He is a veterans coach and not a very good one at that.

Then whats the difference betwen the kid from georgia and Robiskie. One shown he is ready to play now the other has not. And my argument is not that Mangini is a good coach, and I don't think Gholston is a good comarison here. I mean how are guys that have never play for Mangini and spent all of last year on the Packers practice squad coming in and after only a week are active while Robo is not unless they are not showing up in practice.

I still think Rob can play in this league he is just not there yet and its a tough argument to say he would be for another coach. Impossible to prove and other guys are coming from out of no where with zero real expirence and playing while he is still inactive.

maybe there are some truths in this answer...who knows?

When your team is 1-9 (now 1-10) and obviously bad, I wonder how many NFL HC's would not have their first pick in the 2nd round active for the game? I wonder how many would not have said first pick in the second round out there gaining experience?

Only an idiot would not have their first pick of the 2nd round inactive on a 1-10 team. Only an idiot would not have said player out there gaining experience.

So I guess I am calling Mangini an idiot. And in this situation he is an idiot for one of two reasons. Either (1) He is an idiot for using the first pick of the 2nd round on a player who is inactive on a 1-10 team at a position that the Browns need much help or (2) He is an idiot because there is some other reason (maybe one of the possible reasons given above) why he keeps his first pick of the 2nd round inactive that may involve his ego.

Either way, he is an idiot.

Mangini Talks About Loss to Bengals, Acknowledges that Quinn Will Remain Starting QB
Submitted by Eugmc on November 30, 2009

(On if Brian Robiskie has not been active due to effort or performance)- ?This week I thought that Jake (Allen) has had two really good weeks since he got here. Sometimes it?s a function of that. Neither one of the guys was going to play extensively on special teams and I thought that Jake earned the opportunity. Brian?s played in a lot of games. He?s had a lot of play time. He could be active again this week, but he?s going to have to go out and earn that play time. It?s a unique position at receiver. Mike Furrey plays on defense. You have Josh (Cribbs) who obviously has a dominant role on special teams. I think Chansi?s (Stuckey) doing a really nice job in the slot. Mohamed?s (Massaquoi) played well throughout the season. You?re looking at either going with four receivers or going with five and the fifth receiver you?re trying to have a defined role. What packages is he going to play in? What roles is he going to play in those packages? You have to make those decisions throughout the course of the season. Do you bring the third tight end? Do you bring the third running back? Do you bring the fifth wide receiver? Usually the determining factor is what else they can do in the game.?

I never understood this hire. He was mediocre at the Jets with good talent and now he has less talent to work with. Why would the Browns pick up someones trash? It's a joke. He's a joke. Brown's are slowly becoming a joke.

Maybe my hate for Mangini is overshadowing other problems, but what can I say the guy regularly ticks me off.
