Browns receiver Brian Robiskie tries to keep his feet inbounds after a catch against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Robiskie has been on the inactive list for the past two weeks.

Rookie receiver Brian Robiskie stood out in practice this week and may have earned his way back onto the active list after two weeks in street clothes.

Last week, Robiskie took a backseat to newcomer Jake Allen, a second-year player who was claimed off waivers from the Packers on Nov. 18 after spending most of the season on Green Bay's practice squad.

"[Allen] had a better practice and he was out there," said offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. "This week, Brian's had a good week of practice so we'll see where that gets him. He had a good day [Friday]. He made a lot of plays out there in the passing game. Most of them were on the show team, but all that stuff counts. He was running around and plucking the ball pretty well, so we'll see where he's at come our Saturday night meeting."

Daboll said Robiskie's maintained a good attitude despite his lack of opportunities. The 36th overall pick, Robiskie has only one catch for 23 yards and has been inactive four times.

"I told him the other day, 'Look, there are times where I get yelled at and my first thought is [forget] that guy, but you take a step back and you think about it and they're just trying to get you better," said Daboll. "You take it in stride and you move on and you have a good attitude. That's what I told him. I think [Friday] he really let loose. He had fun out there, which was good."'''"

Robiskie to play?
Cleveland rookie wide receiver Brian Robiskie was a healthy scratch last week in Cincinnati, but could be active against the Chargers.

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll said Robiskie?s game-day inactive status occurred because he did not prepare properly for the Bengals.

?Now this week, Brian had a good week of practice and we?ll see where that gets him,? Daboll said. ?I told him, ?Look, there are times that I get yelled at, and my first thought is (expletive) that guy. But you have to realize they?re just trying to help you and take it for that.

?Different guys respond differently, and he?s had a pretty good attitude all through the process.?

Rookie Robiskie shows fans he can catch passes
Former Ohio State star has breakthrough in loss to San Diego Chargers

CLEVELAND: When rookie receiver Brian Robiskie pulled in a 7-yard pass on the Browns' third play of the game Sunday, the crowd in Cleveland Browns Stadium responded with a standing ovation.

Heaven knows what the Dawg Pounders thought about Robiskie's 43-yard reception on the next possession.

Inactive for four games this season, including the previous two weeks, and catching just one pass for 23 yards in seven games, the former Ohio State star had a breakthrough in Sunday's 30-23 loss to the visiting San Diego Chargers. Robiskie, the 36th overall pick from Chagrin Falls High School, caught four passes for 69 yards.

He was targeted on only one other pass, and it would have been a spectacular play if Robiskie had pulled it off. On first down from the Chargers' 33 with 59 seconds left, Brady Quinn managed to fire a bomb to Robiskie in the end zone as Quinn was falling backward.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie got a hand in to break up the pass.

''He made a good play on it,'' Robiskie said of Cromartie. ''As a receiver, that's your quarterback saying he trusts you to throw the ball up like that. You've got to find a way to make that play.''

Browns coach Eric Mangini praised Robiskie afterward, along with tight end Evan Moore and defensive end Brian Schaefering.

''Brian [Robiskie] had a chance to be active again. I thought he really took advantage of it,'' Mangini said. ''I think it's encouraging. Brian worked hard. I'm not saying he hasn't been working hard. . . . Sometimes it happens at different points for different guys. It doesn't mean it isn't going to happen.''

It might have helped that Robiskie said he stopped in Mangini's office to talk after last weekend's 16-7 loss to the Bengals in Cincinnati.

''I asked, 'What do you need me to do? What do I need to do during the week? What do I need to do on Sundays?' '' Robiskie said. ''Basically, he told me to keep practicing hard and we'll see what happens on Sunday.

''He's been pretty open to guys stopping by all season. His door has always been open.''

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll said Robiskie had a good day on the scout team on Friday and played looser than he had been.

''I've been doing what I've been doing,'' Robiskie said. ''He said he thought I was a little bit looser this week. I don't know what it was.

''I'm glad I got an opportunity this week and hopefully I'll keep moving forward.''

Robiskie said he might be one of several young players finally figuring out the pro game.

''It's late in the season, we've been doing it a long time. I think everybody is getting more comfortable,'' he said.

Robiskie shows his stuff

CLEVELAND - The forgotten rookie finally got a chance to show what he has to offer, and he took advantage.

Receiver Brian Robiskie, the first of three second-round draft choices by the Browns, had four receptions for 69 yards, including a 43-yard play in a 30-23 loss to the San Diego Chargers. Entering the game, the Ohio State product had just one reception for the season.

Robiskie has been inactive four times, including the previous two games. Coach Eric Mangini makes activation decisions based on how players perform during practices.

Robiskie didn't think he did anything differently last week to earn a spot on the active roster.

"I've been trying to do the same things each week, and that's just to keep getting better," Robiskie said. "Obviously the coaches made the decision. I've just been trying to do the same thing, and that's to keep working hard in practice and hope to have an opportunity on Sunday."

Robiskie had a meeting with Mangini early last week to discuss his lack of playing time.

"I asked him what he needed me to do," Robiskie said. "What I need to do during the week. He told me to keep working and see what happens on Sunday. He's been pretty open to guys stopping by (his office) all season. His door has always been open. I wanted to stop in and talk to him for a little bit."

If Robiskie is upset about his situation, he's not about to make waves as a rookie.

"The biggest thing is that we're not winning as a team," he said. "That's what really is discouraging because we know we practice hard each and every week. We feel like when we come out on Sunday, we're disappointed in what the team is doing. As a receiver, you want to be out there making plays. Any time you're not doing that, you're definitely going to get discouraged, but you're thinking about what you can do to help the team."

Robiskie almost registered his first NFL touchdown on a pass from Brady Quinn in the fourth quarter. Robiskie jumped high to try to pull down the pass in the end zone, but linebacker Shaun Phillips knocked the ball from his grasp.

"As a receiver, that's your quarterback saying he trusts you to throw the ball up like that," Robiskie said. "As a receiver you have to find a way to make that play."

Robiskie should have many more chances to make plays after his performance against the Chargers.

Mangini baffles me at times with the players he puts on the field. Kory Williams looks great, the little I've gotten to see him. Stuckey over Robo, and Trusnik over the under sized rookie LB from USC are a few others that come to mind.

Browns notes: Robiskie?s long season likely cut short
Filed by Scott Petrak January 1st, 2010 in Sports.

BEREA - Brian Robiskie?s disappointing rookie season has likely come to a disappointing end.

He didn?t practice again Thursday, and coach Eric Mangini said ?it?s not looking good? for him to play Sunday in the season finale against Jacksonville.

?I?m hoping, but not that optimistic,? Mangini said.

Robiskie injured an ankle while getting tackled Sunday against the Raiders after picking up a first down with an 11-yard catch on third-and-8. Robiskie went down awkwardly and didn?t return.

Robiskie was the 36th pick in the draft, the first of the Browns? three second-round selections. He was billed as the most NFL-ready receiver by many draft analysts after a strong career at Ohio State and because his dad, Terry, is an NFL receivers coach.

But the transition to the league didn?t go as smoothly as hoped. Robiskie was inactive five times, made one start and totaled seven catches for 106 yards.

He fell behind fellow rookie Mohamed Massaquoi on the depth chart, never got steady playing time and didn?t carve out a role on special teams - a must with Mangini - until late in the season.

?What I really liked, and you saw it last game, is he got a much better sense as the season went on for how to run routes,? Mangini said. ?He understood what the route was, where to go, things like that, but I felt like he got a better feel for it.

?I thought he had a really excellent week of practice last week, as well, and that?s been more and more the pattern for him as the season has gone on.?

Mangini remains optimistic about Robiskie?s future.

?It hits at different times for different guys, but I?ve liked the progress he?s made,? Mangini said.

Ultimately as a receiver, it's about three things:

1. Do you get open?
2. If you're open and the ball is thrown to you, do you catch it?
3. Do you and the QB understand one another; do you communicate well with one another?

If the answer to any of these is "no," then your future in the League is bleak. Evidently Robo hasn't yet found a way to make all the answers "yes."

From what I understand, #1 has been tough for him so far. Which surprises me with his crisp route running.

Building for future
Rookie receiver Brian Robiskie missed the finale with a high ankle sprain and finished with seven catches for 106 yards in 11 games. Those aren?t the numbers expected from the 36th pick in the draft.

?It was definitely frustrating at times, not playing as much as you would hope, losing, it was definitely hard,? he said. ?If I was playing, if I wasn?t playing, there was a lot of stuff going on, but I knew I was going to be able to learn a lot and I did that. Hopefully I can apply it for next year.?

Robiskie said the adjustment to the NFL goes beyond the field.

?It was not strictly X?s and O?s,? he said. ?It was a lot of the NFL, being a rookie, getting adjusted to a new level and a new game.?

Browns: High hopes for Robiskie

Former Ohio State receiver Brian Robiskie did not have much of a rookie season after being drafted by Cleveland in the second round (36th overall) in the draft last year.

Robiskie only was active for five games, making 7 catches for 106 yards and no scores.

At the NFL combine, new Browns general manager Tom Heckert, formerly with Philadelphia, was asked if the team needed to add a veteran receiver.

"I don?t know. I?m not saying we wouldn?t do that," Heckert said. "Obviously (Mohamed) Massaquoi played well for us and Robiskie is a good player. He?s a guy we liked in Philadelphia. Hopefully those guys will keep coming on to be productive players. I think we?ll be okay.?

Coach Eric Mangini talked about typically seeing a lot of growth in players between their first and second years.

"I think Mohamed and Brian will grow together at that position," Mangini said.

2. Brian Robiskie, WR, Cleveland Browns

2009 draft status: Second round

Analysis: The Browns desperately need someone (anyone?) to step up at wide receiver this year. Last year's leading receiver was Mohamed Massaquoi, who caught only 34 passes. This presents a golden opportunity for Robiskie, who had only seven receptions for 106 yards in his rookie year. Robiskie entered the NFL with a reputation of being one of the draft's most NFL-ready players, but he struggled to fit in with Cleveland's offensive scheme. Cleveland quarterback Jake Delhomme will need someone to throw to next season. This is Robiskie's time to step up.

1. Eric Mangini and others believe receivers sometimes make a huge jump between their rookie and second seasons. It's part of the reason the Browns have not been in a rush to acquire a veteran receiver. It's very early, but Brian Robiskie has been very impressive in OTAs and the other voluntary workouts.

2. Robiskie appeared in 11 games, caught seven passes and needed at least eight games to figure out what the coaches wanted. The Chagrin Falls product set career records at Ohio State for catches (118) and touchdown receptions (34). He has talent, and this season, there is a chance for him to show it.
