WR Austin Mack (2023 Grey Cup Champion)

Following Up and Down Freshman Season, Receiver Austin Mack Readying for Second Spring Camp

A year ago at this time, wide receiver Austin Mack was a true freshman preparing for his first spring camp as a Buckeye. He had already gone through winter workouts, so he at least had some expectations of what was to come.

He shined early on in spring, earning reps at the coveted ‘X’ receiver spot, but as with most freshman, he began to fade as camp went on. Even quarterback J.T. Barrett joked last year in fall camp about how well Mack played early on in the spring compared to the way he finished.

"Money Mack, his spring was funny," Barrett said laughing. "It was classic. A classic receiver kind of spring. At first you have all the energy, you have all stuff you need to go through our practices, then you practice and get about 12 hits and all of a sudden, ‘Mack, you’re not getting open like you were.’

"That’s the thing about being a young guy. When that wall hits, pushing through that wall is going to put you on another level. You’ve got to see just a little bit more. What happens when you have 12 hits during two-a-days and we’re going out there and they’re bringing all this stuff at us, the defense is blitzing and you’ve got to go make a play with guys hanging all over you? We’re going to see what Money Mack has got then."

And like money, by the time spring football was over and he had pushed through that wall, Mack was pretty well spent.

"I think as it kept going and going, he faced his freshman struggles that every freshman is going to face, receivers coach Zach Smith said prior to the Fiesta Bowl. "But he’s come a long way in just a year. He’s another kid that I’m really excited about. He’s practicing and performing at a high level right now. He’s ready to play. There were moments this year where he was ready and then maybe wasn’t, just some immaturity that most 18-year-olds would have. So now, I’m just excited to see him grow up a little bit, which he’s had the opportunity to do over this last month."

OHIO STATE WIDE RECEIVER AUSTIN MACK WORKING TO REACH EXPECTATIONS AFTER HUMBLING FRESHMAN SEASON

83953_h.jpg

COLUMBUS – Expectations were high going into Austin Mack’s freshman season at Ohio State last year.

As the first early enrollee ever to lose his black stripe in spring practice since Urban Meyer implemented the tradition at Ohio State, Mack was expected to make an immediate impact on the Buckeyes offense last season.

Instead, the four-star wide receiver recruit caught only two passes for 15 yards in his freshman year.

As a result, external expectations are lower for Mack going into his sophomore season. But he and his coaches and teammates believe he is much more prepared now to make an impact.

Despite the immediate impression he made last spring, Mack wasn’t ready to contribute in a meaningful fashion last season. He describes his first season as a Buckeye as humbling.

"It’s an eye-opening thing," Mack said Thursday. "Every freshman, we come in, especially the fall camp, it’s a new reality. Ohio State football. And you get humbled."

Mack says he struggled with consistency last season, which kept him from getting on the field. Now that he has a year at Ohio State under his belt, however, Mack believes he is ready to be a difference-maker for the Buckeyes.

"Right now, I’ve got to go through fall camp, be consistent and hopefully I can earn a spot," Mack said. "I think I’ll be in the rotation. But my expectation, by the end of this fall camp, I’ll be one of the starters. That’s the expectation I have for myself. So I’m going to push myself to hopefully reach that expectation."

I think Johnnie Dixon is proving the "it's now or never" mantra for guys to be #fakenews. I'd be surprised if Mack made any impact this year, but next year and beyond....

Oh I think he'll make an impact and be in the rotation, he just might not be a starter. I get your point for sure re: Dixon though, guys often take time to break through in that group. But when Smith was asked if Mack and Victor would have bigger roles, he responded "Has to happen. There's no scenario where it's not going to happen. They have to be a major part of this offense. I don't even want to plan or think for if they're not, because it's that necessary." He always wants 6 playing a huge role and I think Mack is a big part of that.g It sounds like the WR group as a whole has really come along and we are going to see a lot of guys get time out there. It sounds like the coaches see him rotating in with the #2 group. If I had to guess, the #1 group would be Dixon, Campbell and McLaurin, with McLaurin being right on the #2 group bubble. In the #2 group, I would have Mack, Victor and Hill. Grimes could be a very interesting wildcard to watch, as I feel he will play if the injury is 100% behind him.

In any event, I really think this year will be a collective effort with the WR group and the ball will get spread around. Mack should be a big part of that.

With all of the summer talk about Victor breaking out, I never bought into it. I thought that Mack had a better blend of size, ball hawking and creating mismatches. I could even see Mack pushing to start by mid season, I think his upside is that high
