Who will be tOSU's head coach on July 1, 2012? (betting closed)

I don't think I remember this being discussed but I want to ask Gator how he would feel if Urban were to suddenly become the OSU coach.

It would make his transformation to Buckeyedom complete.

Have you watched Florida lately? :tongue2:

Right. It would be nice if he had some experience as a HC at a major program before someone hires as a HC. If only he could get some HC experience somewhere.

A top tier program isn't the only place a coach can be broken in, and I don't think it's a fantastic idea to ever have a guy who has never in his life held HC duties step right in at this level. He could head to a MAC or Big East school, or even lower level big 4 conference school like 'sota to get some reps with the job.

A lot of posters here seem to believe we could put anyone at the helm, and we'll be a good enough school to bring home the title. It never works that way. Looking at the list of teams who win, they either a) have a guy with an incredible resume (Saban, Meyer, Carroll), or b) a guy who was lucky enough to inherit a team in it's prime from the aforementioned (Miles). If Luke is going to be on that first list, there are going to be growing years, and I don't think it's sensible for those years to be at a top tier program.

My point was that when this coaching search will start, Luke will have one year of HC experience under his belt. If you are going to evaluate him properly, you have to give him one more year with a coaching staff of his choosing.

I believe it went something like "many in gator nation would be hurt and upset and butt hurt if Urbie coached anywhere else ever even his grandson's YMCA team" or some shit like that.

I'd think less of him, and would advise you to look for a good replacement coach in two years...unless he somehow learns how to become a CEO coach and not burn himself out again with stress and other health problems.

But you would be stacked with four and five star recruits for the next guy. So the up side is that the down side will be limited, even if he is not a long term solution.

I may be wrong, I think his entertaining open coaching jobs is more an ego thing for Urban than a possible career path, given his choice to step down and spend time with family, but we will see.

I understand that there is much less work to do during the week, but the whole "jetting all over the country to be in the broadcast booth every weekend" thing doesn't seem very conducive to spending time with your family to me.

I think he got that out of his system and has the itch to be back on the sidelines.

Sunday, I was at Georgia Tech and saw my daughter (Nikki) play (volleyball).
Monday, I was with my son for his 12-year-old football. Today I'm driving down
to Fort Myers tonight to watch my other daughter (Gigi at Florida Gulf Coast) play.
Sunday after my Michigan game, I'm flying to Miami to watch Nikki play again. I've
seen more volleyball, baseball and football in two months than I have in six years.
That part of it I love.

Hey, I'm not saying it's impossible at all. Just giving my take to Georgia.

So you're a young guy then.

I'm 23, but I'm not unaware of the many wins and losses accrued in Columbus in the years before my time (which were apparently also the years during yours :tongue2:)

But this has nothing to do with that. I never expect tOSU to lose a game because I am familiar with the high levels of coaching (certain coordinators excluded) and talent that populate the football program year after year. I don't ever expect to ever lose because I know that every single game is winnable.

This is a valid point. Fickell has been hamstrung by being saddled (or blessed, depending on your point of view) with Tressel's staff.

But I'm concerned that Fickell hasn't spent time on enough staffs to be able to know people of the caliber necessary to be effective assistants at this level. I'm especially concerned that he could assemble an effective offensive staff, including someone who is competent at developing a good playbook, formulating a good game plan and then calling the right plays. The last of these is what Tressel was so brilliant at doing IMO.

So - you're one of the young, spoiled fans then?

Just giving you a hard time. You are like Gator fans since the 1990s that think success is a birthright. They are wrong. You need to savor the good runs. There will eventually be some during your life that aren't so good. That is when you get to prove your loyalty to a program by not getting down and abandoning them when they show - definitely show - that they will NOT win every game, and expecting that is non-nonsensical. Expecting them to win is not being a great fan. Supporting them when they aren't so good is what makes the measure of a fan.

I hope that you don't get tested on that any time soon.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, enough with the nice guy stuff.

How's that schematic advantage working out down there for you guys? :tongue2:
