Who will be Penn State's HC on Feb 2, 2012? (Note - don't merge old posts)

I hate them as much as anyone but PSU is always just the right coach away from being consistently good again.

They have the tradition, resources and in state talent base. If a guy can come in and reestablish them in their old PA/east coast recruiting grounds he could do well for himself.
That's if this scandel doesn't have a "scorched earth" effect on their entire program...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but PSU hasn't been a major player in western PA and especially Ohio (outside of legacies) in years. On top of that, the SEC is seemingly hitting the east coast pretty hard of late.

Re-establishing themselves recruiting wise in any of those areas may be easier said than done... especially without the name Paterno to throw around.

On top of all of that, they may have nice facilities, but their location in the middle of nowhere plays against them as well (see: Pryor's comments).

Oh yeah, and that.

I think we are all well aware that they haven't been what they used to be.

Try and be somewhat unbiased about it and ask how much of that was due to a senile old man being in charge about 12 years longer than he should have been?

You take a young guy with some charisma to jump start the recruiting and they can become a major player again in short order. The basic ingredients for a successful program are there. I'm not saying its Mullen or that its easy to do, but it can be done and we would be wise not to be too dismissive.

To keep my biased glasses on just a bit longer, I don't think Penn State has been a "major player" since the mid 90's, and I don't think a senile head coach was the primary factor facilitating their dive into mediocrity after '94.

I look at them a lot like ND, and without the Paterno anchor, I foresee them drifting along a very similar coach to coach path desperately seeking a "return to glory".

Oh yeah, and the scandal.

I hope you are right.

I don't want to see them good ever again.

One of these things is not like the others.

I don't either, never liked Penn State, even before the move to the Big 10. And yeah, they haven't been solid since the mid-90s. But as you noted, PA DOES have a lot of football talent. We've been the primary benefactor of that for 10 years now as JT took the best while Paterno slept.

So, if they do get a decent coach and they don't get completely hammered by the NCAA, I'd think that program would have the ability to become strong again. However, I certainly hope that's not the case....it would be much nicer if they had a RichRod type hire that would set them back a few years.

So if PSU gets Mullen, we have Urbie, and Iowa has the greatest coach in B10 history and seventeen time B1G COY Ferentz, and B1G teams start winning BCS NC's on the reg, does that make northern players faster?

Linky Link

"Yeah I heard about the TV report," Mullen said Tuesday night at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson. "It's the most irresponsible reporting that I've ever heard of."
Mullen said he had not been so much as contacted by Penn State "or any other school."

Mullen, in town for the Conerly Trophy presentation dinner, then took it a step further. "I blame it on rival institutions trying to ruin our recruiting which we have dominated in this state over the past three years," Mullen said.

Not the reaction I'd expect from I guy interested in this job in my imho...

"Aren't these nice facilities young man? And right over here are the showers. .......Yep, that's the one."

My first three wives were all murdered in the basement. Had a hell of a time moving those properties.
