Joe Schad is reporting that sources say that Dan Mullen in the top candidate for Penn State.

Heck they can have him--MSU was 6-6 this year (2-6 in conference), and their wins were against the following cupcakes:

Memphis
LA Tech (in OT)
UAB
Kentucky
Tennessee-Martin
Ole Miss

Harvard's Murphy interested in Penn State

I think he?d definitely be interested in looking into it,? the source said Tuesday. ?He?d have to look ? at this one. He?s got plenty of years left in him. He?s absolutely interested in exploring it.?
Murphy, 54, has long been admired by his peers. On Saturday, the Crimson won their sixth Ivy League title under Murphy. His name popped up at Michigan before Rich Rodriguez was hired, at Notre Dame before Charlie Weis was hired and at Boston College before Frank Spaziani was hired. Murphy?s name has been connected to at least six major jobs since 2001.

Passed over for Rich Rod and Charlie Weis.

Think about that for a minute.

It is safe so say Urban Meyer won't be coaching at Penn State next year (except for one game on 27 Oct and that will be on the visitor side).

I think Mullen is what you would call a "poor man's Urban Meyer". Look at his resume he was with Urban at Notre Dame, Bowling Green, Utah, and Florida. If you can't get the BEST (i.e. Urban) and they obviously can't; maybe they will settle for Mullen.

I agree to an extent. There are a lot of people that believe Meyer is to Mullen as Hawkins is to Peterson.

Not to say that this is true but in terms of an offensive mind he is a very worthy candidate. And he is from PA originally.

Again not to say I would want Mullen over Meyer or anything like that but this would be a huge upgrade over the lack of offense PSU has had over the years.

Mullen does not have the personality for a head coach with the press and alumni reqs. He is the Micky Andrews of offense. There is a reason Andrews could not find a hc job in those top 5 dynasty years.

Wait - speaking of FSU, has Billmac taken that quote of mine of his sig yet?

what a choice, stay in bumblescum mississippi and get trounced by SEC schools each year, or be the guy to clean up the mess at PedoSU, and hope that the NCAA doesn't take a blowtorch to your scrotum in the process.

I think he is from New Hampshire, originally.

Born near Philly, raised in NH, attended college near Philly.

His ties to PA and Penn State in particular are tenuous at best. Tenuous ties are about as much as they'd be able to get away with right now though.
