Do we all agree that the defense is what's keeping OSU outta the elite team talk?

by whom? the mediots or by those in the forum?

If it's by the mediots, then no, the defense could have a shut out streak of 18 games going and not allowed anyone to have more than 100 yards of total offense per game and there would still be questions about Ohio State.

As for those of us on the forum, I'd say it's a resounding yes.

To me the offense is elite, and could put points on anyone. Only thing that can slow the offense is turnovers.

In my eyes what's kept us for speed boating everyone is our pass defense. I don't put all the blame on Fickell or Withers. It just seems deeper then that. Seems like a defense struggling with it's identity.

Overall the team is elite in my eyes, because when it comes time to make plays they make 'em. Another thing I think people don't look at is, the run defense is honestly pretty shout. So teams tend to use the short passing game as a substitute.

The coverage busts, lack of LBer devolvement are very concerning in my eyes.

Agree with this emphatically.
Like to add that imo, the B1G is underrated this year and I wouldn't bet against tOSU vs anyone, as long as they continue to improve on offense and win. The scary part for the rest of the country is I don't think we've seen anything close to what this offense is capable of.

When you are on top and king of the hill. Everybody is coming after you. Plus Ohio State is very well respected at home or away. The opposing teams know that thet have to play mistake free football to beat us.
Right now we have some issues on the defensive side and hopefully the coaching staff can work out the kinks
and get the defense back to being respectable.

Couldn't agree more. OSU hangs another 14 on Iowa if they don't play keep away in the 1st half. Iowa used the Cover 0 in goal line to slow down OSU, but TM countered with the rocket screen.

I think the X-factor is Wilson. His big play ability could take this offense from a 40 ppg offense to a 50 ppg offense, IMO.

If the defense just tightens up the pass defense a little we're looking at a elite NC team.

Sorry for the bit of derailment.

A lot more aggression tonight and it worked beautifully. Still, they had one big time WR and we allowed him to go off. Sooner or later we have to figure out who the playmakers are and take them out of the game. There's no shame in saying that the other team has a better player than one of our secondary and using a scheme to take him away.

Youngsters are playing very well though, imo. Thatta boy Noah Spence.

Going strictly by the stat sheet Robinson did catch 12 for 173yds and a TD.
However, 65yds on a single play was in junk time with the backups in.
He had just 3 receptions in the 1st half for 38yds. Two of those for first downs on the opening drive. He had 2 more receptions for 13yds in the 3rd Quarter from Hackenberg. The majority of his production came from Ferguson.
I don't know exactly when we started subbing out the defense, but regardless of the stat line... he wasn't a factor.

tl;dr
First drive 2 rec - 28yds
1st half 3 rec - 38yds

total from Hackenberg 5 rec - 51yds
total from Ferguson 7 rec - 122yds - 1 TD

It was interesting to listen to the post-game interviews and hear the d-line talk about being told to think less and get after the QB. That strategy worked at least for a freshman QB (and many think it will work against upper class men too).
