Two things:
1) I'm sorry but the undefeated argument needs to stop and I wish the coaches would stop (I'm not quoting anyone because the coaches have used it and numerous posters here). If our offense was not light-years ahead, we would have lost a few games by now. I realize every win is a team win, but it's not like it was the defensive game plan to let the opposing offense move the ball at will, cause almost no turnovers, and depend on the offense. Occasionally they were noteworthy in the role of the win (I will give them Wisconsin), but often they put alot of pressure on our offense to score points (Northwestern, Iowa...Buffalo to some extent...Cal, Nebraska, and Indiana last year before Boren made the move).
2) The offense is not putting the defense right back on the field most of the time. I am too lazy to look up time of possession but while we get to the line quick, we often pause, look back over to the sideline, and then run the play. Lots of the plays are 5-8 yard runs from Hyde or Braxton. We possess the ball and usually have sustained touchdown drives. It's not like every drive is barely over a minute like Scoregon. "The defense is getting tired" angle is usually attributable to their inability to get off the field on third downs.
- Note: Not trying to pick on the defense, but I'm sick of the baseless excuses. If you want to blame the coaches for not utilizing our ability and adjusting the scheme quick enough to put our boys in a position to succeed earlier in games, that is a justified excuse. If you want to point to Roby/Bryant both being off the field against Iowa, very justified. If you want to point to the massive attrition we've had on the defensive side of the ball and the subsequent loss of both leadership and talent (Bell, Whiting, McVey, Fellows, Wood, etc.), extremely justified. There are concrete reasons for our defensive performance thus far. However, the two I pointed out are not.
