I just finished the Gunslinger by Stephen King. There certainly were hints of the kind of epic fantasy I like to read, but I'm not entirely sold as to whether the Dark Tower series is worth my time based on the first book.

Any recommendations from those who have read the series? Or comments on how representative the Gunslinger is of the rest of the books.

I know several others answered your question, but I think the answer lies more in your own interests. If you are a Stephen King fan, you will greatly enjoy this series. The Gunslinger was, by far, the slowest-moving book of the series, and is a very poor indication of the other six books. The rest of them greatly pick up the pace, and IMO are fantastic. Again, if you aren't a King fan, then don't waste your time, as many of the references and allusions will mean nothing to you.

I am currently re-reading the Robert Jordan "Wheel of Time" series. Scooter, I think you would love this series. Greatest epic fantasy series I have ever read, and I am a fantasy nerd. George R. R. Martin's series is also good, and I would recommend both.

I would also highly recommend Battle Royale by Koushon Takami. It was also made into a movie (Japanese with English subtitles, I believe), but the book is, simply put, fricking out there...and it's tough to put down.

Sorry, I don't read non-fiction...reading is my escape from reality, and I like to get as far away as I can.

Word of warning regarding Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series....

If you don't relish the minutae of 4,000 pages dedicated to the description of the fasteners on a gown without advancing the plot in any meaningfull way...you might want to pass.

Jordan was talented but he really, REALLY needed an editor to cull about half his word count and keep him focused.

I most recently read Blaze by [strike]Stephen King[/strike] Richard Bachman and Sons of Fortune by Jeffrey Archer.

I finished Duma Key by Stephen King last night, his most recent release. One of the best he's written in the last 10 years.

Also started World Without End, Ken Follett's sequel to The Pillars of the Earth.

The Frontiersman

I am reading the Frontiersman by Allan Eckert. Great book about the history of the Ohio territory. Eckert brings Simon Kenton and native Americans such as Tecumseh alive in his narratives. I have read this book numerous times. It never ceases to amaze me.

Simon Kenton was one BAD A**

Eh, I think it was more him taking full advantage of the acclaim and popularity the series received. He turned what could/should have been a 6 book series and doubled it. Smart move economically, but there are some seriously slow-moving parts to the series. Luckily, they're all concentrated in books 7 - 9. The last chapter of book 9 contains more action/information that the previous three books combined...but it's been much better since then.

Also, for any fans of the books that somehow haven't heard, Jordan actually died last year. Brandon Sanderson is currently working with Jordan's wife (who is/was also his chief editor - explains a lot, I know) to publish the final book in the series.

I would also recommend any book by Carol Berg, at least for those into the fantasy genre. Just finished Flesh and Spirit, which was a good read, and I really enjoyed all three of Restoration, Revelation, and Transformation.

You like Wheel of Time better than A Song of Fire and Ice? To each his own... but the middle three books drag. I had to put down Wheel of Time, as it started to get wayyyy to convoluted after book 3. Telling the same story from the point of view of these seemingly minor characters was trying. Conversely, I discovered Martin's series after Feast and... I devoured it. The depth and realism of character in Martin's series is something that just isn't found in his genre. Not to spoil anything, but let's face it, the end of A Game of Thrones makes you stop an realize "whoa, they're playing for keeps." I am never worried about the fate of Lan Madrigorian, but no one's sacred in ASoFaI.

If you want to check out another really good series in the genre, Daniel Abraham's Long Price quartet is really compelling so far. The third book is finished and is going to be relased in June.

However, I've picked up "Sword of Truth" series... so far so good. Still on book 1.
