What book are you currently reading, or recommend?

I just finished the Gunslinger by Stephen King. There certainly were hints of the kind of epic fantasy I like to read, but I'm not entirely sold as to whether the Dark Tower series is worth my time based on the first book.

Any recommendations from those who have read the series? Or comments on how representative the Gunslinger is of the rest of the books.

Do not base the series solely on The Gunslinger. I'm getting ready to start the fourth book. Read The Drawing Of The Three. If you still don't like it, then you probably won't like the series, but Gunslinger is a much different, slower moving book than the other two that I have read.

The pace of the series picks up as you go along, but it also gets further "out there" the more you read. The Gunslinger was certainly the slowest of the set.

IMO the epic-style Gunslinger was the only good one of the bunch, unless you're a hardcore King fan willing to indulge his rambling unfiltered imagination (which admittedly I have been at times, re: Insomnia).

I've been slowly reading and utterly fascinated by Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, about 2 magicians who bring back practical magic to England in the early 1800s. I can't remember the last time I said this about a contemporary work of fiction, but this book is simply brilliant. The stylized names, the historical realism, the understated descriptions of magic in action... amazing!

I needed something mindless after reading Dune, so I'm reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I should probably be able to blow through that in a couple of days, and get back to catching up on Stephen King books. Salem's Lot is next.

Shipwrecks - Akira Yoshimura

A village of breakers in medieval Japan gets more than they bargained for when one of the ships they lure to it's death is carrying disease in addition to hoped for treasure.

So, Yoshiumra wins the race to put out a book on the hiring of Rich Rodriquez. I love a good allegory.
