Sure every year you all TRY to put a spin on it and try and make the schedules look sort of even when in fact you can check any SOS ranking and ND always wins out. I did not bring up the schedules I was simply having fun with Texas before someone brought up the last 2 times ND -OSU played.
Then you all went there.....
The only reason you all can pound your chest is that this year you play a top-notch OTC opponent. As for this year yes ND's SOS is down but even at that last week Sagarin had ND's SOS #1 which will surely go down the second half of the season.
As for you Daddy you mentioned 1988 which was the last year ND won a title. Try again...
What in the hell does ND not joining the Big 10 and not playing OSU have to do with who has the tougher schedule? We played USC and OSU is NOT better than USC.
Chief, we realize that you are a solid fan and I for one am not disrespecting your team or the new coach. However, the facts are...
- The strength of schedule across a wide range of computer ratings showed that your allegations about strength of schedule this year are not accurate.
- My post last year showed that, according to the Marsee ratings, there wasn't much difference in the strength of schedule the last ten years. In fact, there was no statistically significant difference between the schedules. See http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12230&highlight=Notre+Dame
Here is the ratings from that thread in graph form, right click and open in a new window.
I agree with everything Grad said, except that I think Notre Dame is a player right now. I think you are right in that Notre Dame plays a tough schedule but so does Ohio State and, because it is in the Big Ten, year in and out, it gets tougher as the year goes on. I think year in and out it might be fair to say that Notre Dame's schedule is front loaded with tougher teams.
I think Weis is doing all the right things and I sincerely respect what he has accomplished this year. I still think we could take Notre Dame. I respect your right to disagree. I also think that opinions are like noses, everyone has one.
Why do I think that Notre Dame's refusal to enter the Big Ten is relevant? There are two reasons.
- If we want to get beyond opinions, then there is one way, line 'em up and play it out. Ohio State has stated its desire to play more games, Notre Dame has refused. If Notre Dame was in the Big Ten, it would have to face Ohio State regularly.
- Lose early and you end up with a better ranking. In my opinion, Notre Dame wouldn't be able to load the last five games as it has this year if it was in the Big Ten.
Clearly, Grad is a bit frustrated that we have this discussion, and I guess we all are. My point is, if you want to disagree with something I have posted, then by all means do, but put some objective facts on the table that support your point of view.
This could be an interesting discussion about two of the most storied programmes in Division 1 football history if everyone wants that and everyone might just learn something.
