Weis's Play Calling in the ND BYU game

The ND OSU series is tied 2 - 2 folks. (Just wanted to say that as it appears no one knows that)

Chief - I realize you gotta be a domer and do what domers do on message boards, but lets get something clear. In 1995 OSU played possibly the toughest schedule in America and went 11-2 (Losing to Meatchicken and Tennecheat in the infamous "5.5" cleat game). In 1996 with a slightly easier schedule they went 11-1 and should have taken a share of the national title with Florida (Who also was a 1 loss team that year) We added ND not because we needed any tougher schedule. We added ND because it would make for a good home and home, with lots of hype and money for both programs.

if notre dame is so awesome, why did they lose, AT HOME, to a 4-3 michigan state team. Anyone? Anyone??.....

Amen.

Their resume thus far this year isn't any better than ours, but a potent offense simply makes you look more impressive.

Their loss to USC at home is roughly the same to our loss to Texas

the only common opponent we have played is MSU, both at home.....they lost, we won.

And just what domers do on message boards? Same thing as OSU fans...

And ND did not reschedule OSU because unlike OSU, ND plays that type of schedule alll the time.

I figured that it would only be a matter of time before the Domers start to beat their chest, and rant about their great schedule. Guess what NDC, Ty Willingham came out of the gates strong in his first season at Notre Dame and look where that got him. Say what you want, but until you string together some good seasons on a consecutive basis, Notre Dame will be an average football team, who is loved by the media, who has their own TV station.........who continues to live in 1988.

I would love to play the Irish this season.

Come on' guys lets give a little credit to Notre Dame they are a pretty good team and a game against them would be pretty damn even.

I also don't like the whole scedule thing, b/c if they have to do that b/c they join a damn conference. They also play BYU, Navy, Syracuse, Stanford, Washington, Pitt. I think I would take our schedule over thier's.

Of the teams they have played only one team doesnt have 2 or more loses and that is USC. Also their combined opponents recore is 38-38. That is hardly a great scehdule. It looked good b4 the season. Our combined opponents record is 51-30. No wonder they don't want to join the big ten.

I also think people think that Weiss is god, but Quinn put up some damn good number last year, and the offense has just improved with a year under their belt and an offensive minded coach. They better find a defense in South bend b/c if when people figure out the O' they could be hurting.

I give their team credit this year for their wins, but I refuse the respect their programs the way I respect others that have earned it. It drives me crazy to see them instantly catipulted to the top just because they are Notre Dame........I think some have forgot that they have been mediocre for a while now.

How many teams with winning records have you played this year? I heard someone say that you have only beaten 1 team with a winning record. So if you take your two losses, that is three teams with winning records that you have played .... I'm not saying that is horrible, but our schedule is just as good this year.

Chief, every year you talk smack like this, and every year we put the facts on the table to show you are wrong.

Argument: Notre Dame plays a tougher schedule.

If you search the archives, I have broken down the schedule argument and it looks pretty even over the years. This year ND and OSU play the two of the toughest schedules. However, according to the average of computer ratings, at mratings.com, OSU plays a far tougher schedule, mainly because of the cupcakes that now fill Notre Dame's schedule but also because Ohio State plays more top 25 rated teams.

Posted below you will find the ratings of the teams and also a cumulative ratings showing how tough the season has been if it had stopped at the end of each week. There has been no comparison since the Iowa game.

Sorry that I can't make these column align better.
Columns: Notre Dame opponent, ND opponent computer rating, OSU opp. rating, OSU opponent<O:p

<O:p

Computer rankings, averaged by mratings.com

Notre Dame Ohio State
Pittsburgh 64.00 61.00 Miami (Ohio)
Michigan 21.00 2.00 Texas
Michigan St 25.00 76.00 San Diego State
Washington 93.00 32.00 Iowa
Purdue 69.00 5.00 Penn State
USC 1.00 25.00 Michigan State
Bringham Young 62.00 46.00 Indiana
Tennessee 22.00 20.00 Minnesota
Navy 72.00 90.00 Illinois
Syracuse 98.00 30.00 Northwestern
Stanford 57.00 21.00 Michigan
*
Thus, Ohio State plays five top 25 computer rated teams.* Notre Dame plays four.

<O:p

Average cumulative ratings <O:p

Notre Dame Ohio State
*
Pittsburgh 64.00 65.00 Miami (Ohio)
Michigan 42.50 31.50 Texas
Michigan St 36.67 46.33 San Diego State
Washington 50.75 42.75 Iowa
Purdue 54.40 35.20 Penn State
USC 45.50 33.50 Michigan State
Bringham Young 47.86 35.29 Indiana
Tennessee 44.63 33.38 Minnesota
Navy 47.67 39.67 Illinois
Syracuse 52.70 38.70 Northwestern
Stanford 53.09 37.09 Michigan

Thus, the cumulative rating of Notre Dame's opponents is nearly 40% higher than Ohio State's (16% difference).

So, schedule arguments are pretty bogus. Let's leave the hyperbole aside, Chief and try to get better marks for "plays well with others" than last year. The fact is that Notre Dame will not enter the Big Ten and will not schedule Ohio State. This is a fact. Furthermore, Notre Dame does not play a tougher schedule.

Sure every year you all TRY to put a spin on it and try and make the schedules look sort of even when in fact you can check any SOS ranking and ND always wins out. I did not bring up the schedules I was simply having fun with Texas before someone brought up the last 2 times ND -OSU played.
Then you all went there.....

The only reason you all can pound your chest is that this year you play a top-notch OTC opponent. As for this year yes ND's SOS is down but even at that last week Sagarin had ND's SOS #1 which will surely go down the second half of the season.

As for you Daddy you mentioned 1988 which was the last year ND won a title. Try again...

What in the hell does ND not joining the Big 10 and not playing OSU have to do with who has the tougher schedule? We played USC and OSU is NOT better than USC.

We have been scheduling much tougher OOC games with Texas, USC, Miami, and Va Tech on upcoming schedules and lets not forget we play in the Big ten which is one hell of a conference.

We played Texas and Texas is better than USC.

Fact: Charlie Weis is a damn good coach and ND will be a major player in the 3 years

Fact: ND lost to tOSU in back to back years, ND then declined to play tOSU in another series

Fact: ND plays a tough schedule year in and year out.

Fact: tOSU is playing a pretty damn tough schedule also and the Big Ten is full of teams on the rise

Fact: Weis is doing a fantastic job of recruiting....tOSU always does a good job getting talent.

Fact: NDChief is a rabid fan who defends his program with great pride even though he may sometimes have a skewed view due to his loyalty...so do we as Buckeye fans.

Fact: This argument is like a broken record that somehow keeps finding its way to the forum
