USC Trojans (official thread)

Herman would be a homerun for them. I DO NOT want Herman in LA. Whittingham would be a very good hire...I think he's one of the more underrated coaches in the game. Those two are the best of the field, imo. Chip Kelly would be intriguing, but I don't think he'd be the guaranteed success most do. He had a unique situation at Nike U. Took under recruited, lower rated guys and made them stars. Kids played with something to prove. Not sure that translates to tinsel town. Could easily end up a dickrod-scUM situation, in my IMO.

They won't take a 1st year head coach like Herman...Not going to happen.

Whittingham is from SoCal but their last hire from within conference did not turn out real well.

Sumlin would be hilarious because aggy really thinks they're a college football blue blood that would never lose a coach, not even to a USC, Ohio State or Notre Dame. They're convinced that Bryant only left because of home ties.

They've already forgot what happened last go round? USC already made a run at Sumlin, including offering to buy him a house in the Hollywood Hills.

This was before he had the finest college football stadium and facilities on the planet. He still politely told them to pound sand.

Aggy being forced to stare into the mirror and face who and what they really are is never a bad thing.

Not to mention his $35 million contract with the Eagles. He ain't leaving that deal until he gets his dough.

You forgot about the cheating.

OTOH, that's maybe a check mark in his favor....

Chip Kelly's Trojans would be like his Ducks teams but with a defense.

That's the assumption, but is it a sure thing? Remember when everyone said dickrod was gonna terrorize the B1G when his offenses got the caliber of recruits scUM drew? There's more to coaching at big time programs than simply "schematics." There's culture, interacting with donors/alumni, etc.. Why the defensive assumption? His defenses at Oregon ranged from decent to mediocre, much like dickrod's at wvu. Hell, dickrod fielded better D's at wvu, but couldn't put it together at scUM, a program traditionally known for fielding good defenses.

He very well could build a monster at USC, or he could fall flat on his face when he tries to utilize his system at a program that is vastly different from a "culture" standpoint than Nike U. I just don't see it as a guarantee.

Right the other thing is...

Per Scout, Oregon was ranked

2009 - #26 (First year, and I get that he was the OC, but still the "transition) year.
2010 - #13
2011 - #13
2012 - #15
2013 - #17

For Fun USC:
2009 - #8
2010 - #6
2011 - #5
2012 - #20 (lower)
2013- #18 (lower)

Now, the points I'm trying to make are these.

1. While elite programs are used to seeing single digits all day long, Oregon isn't recruiting the little sisters of the poor. (or at their orphanage or whatever they do). This is a workable level of talent. Heck, take out overrated SEC classes in front of them and they probably look a lot better. to take it further. Kelly wasn't getting chumps, he spent his schollies on offense. (oh yeah, and the cheating)

2. USC doesn't always get single digit recruiting classes. And personally, I have a sneaking suspicion that USC is an awful lot closer to Miami (oh yeah, and the cheating) than people want to think. Can they be really, really good in bursts? Sure... but they can be awfully mediocre and tough to deal with too. (oh, yeah, and the cheating)

The 2012 and 2013 USC recruiting ranking are artificially depressed because of the low class size (sanctions). USC has been near the very top of the heap in recruiting the best talent around for a long, long time ... unlike Nike U. And there's enough talent there right now such that the right coach could (maybe even should) have them in the playoffs.

If I were USC, I'd be putting out feelers to any coach I wanted, not excluding Saban and Meyer. Might they say FU? Sure, but what if Saban just happens to think beach life is the shit? You'd hate to not make that call.

My serious money for the next Trojan coach would be on guys like Chip Kelly, Jim Harbaugh (yes, really), Gary Patterson and Mark Dantonio. I don't think USC needs to aim any lower, at least initially.
