My comment is simply on the timing.Program stability. If a successor isn't in place, and it's an open coaching search, there's an obvious large-scale transition. If it's handed off to Day, there is continuity and a succession plan that can more easily be sold to recruits and their families.
I think Meyer is 50/50 on wanting to continue....this year has been hell from a media perspective. Just being targeted unrelentingly as if he actually abused women. I don't think he or Shelly really think it's worth it at this point. At the same time, he has a roster of 85 players and promises to those guys and their families. Staying through 2019 is a decent compromise. The current freshman and sophomores get 1 more year under Meyer, and then it's transitioned over to Day with largely the same coaching staff intact.
And in theory....if things go off-track, Meyer could always be asked to come back after a year or two away. My biggest concern with Day taking over is actually having Meyer's shadow over his shoulder after Urban has already shown a penchant for wanting to come back after stepping away.
This is basically the Lincoln Riley method.....I don't have any issue with it. Opening up a coaching search would create a lot of instability IMO.
This is a reasonable take, but I don't see Urban announcing to the world in a few days that 2019 will be his last season. Just seems incredibly strange.Because that's when coaching changes happen and everyone is going to be wondering what Day is doing....
I buy Day as a succession plan, but I don't think they're going to put a date on it. Could be 2019, 2020, 2021...who knows.
