University of Wisconsin football (59-0: Deal With It ... or Quit)

After thinking about it for a while...

At the time of his hiring, I thought Gary Andersen was a bit of an odd fit, given his background and the style of offense he ran at Utah State. It wasn't a particularly flashy hire, but IMO Alvarez had earned the fan base's trust in finding the right guy. Andersen said all the right things and acted genuinely in it for the long haul at UW. There was some apprehension after how the team finished last season (consecutive losses to PSU and South Carolina) but he was granted the usual honeymoon period that new coaches typically enjoy.

Then there was this year. The loss to LSU to start the season was frustrating to say the least, but it was exacerbated by a clear miscommunication between Andersen, his staff, and the press. There was Gordon's mysterious injury, then there was the bizarre "yips" episode with Stave that nobody has yet figured out. Andersen completely bungled the handling of that situation. PR is definitely not the guy's forte. He righted the ship with a hiccup in Evanston along the way. Even with the deficiencies at several skill positions, namely QB and WR, he still managed to guide the team to a West division title. He gets credit for that. Basically, the dude didn't screw up the pretty good program he inherited.

See ya Gary. The Nebraska game was fun. But, you also presided over the most embarrassing Badger loss of my lifetime. So your legacy is forever a mixed bag.

There you go, Bucky. Just work through it.

Apparently Wisconsin's academic policies played a part in Andersen's departure. David Cutcliffe has been running a successful football program at a school with difficult academic policies for years now. He took Duke's football program from dumpster fire to a respectable team that has now played in three straight bowl games. Wisconsin would be wise to take a look at him.

Wisconsin does not admit regular qualifiers. It is my understanding that that is relatively uncommon. But that's not an excuse. Alvarez and Bielema were both able to win under (presumably) the same restrictions.

Interesting.

Yeah, there's no reason to not be able to succeed under those conditions when others have done it on a fairly consistent basis, it just may be more difficult than you're used to. He was, however, about to find some ingredients gone with nothing comparable to restock with, so I'm sure that played a part. To be fair, part of that does fall on Bert's seeming inability to/decision not to recruit QBs outside of the college version of free agents the last few years before he left.

Andersen did express frustration several times with the academic standards and how he felt hamstrung by them. But it got to the point where you said "Tough shit, coach. You knew what you were working with when you came here." It's up to the coach to figure out how to work around a potential roadblock like that.

Some random thoughts regarding Wisconsin:

  • 2002 Brooks Bollinger: "The Horseshoe They built it, we own it"
  • 2003 and the fall of Saigon act they put on after the game
  • “I can tell you this,” says Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema. “We at the Big Ten don’t want to be like the SEC—in any way, shape or form.”
  • 1999 some fat cocksucker of a coach let his cretins dance on the Block O logo setting off about a 5 year run of that [Mark May]
  • Their fans trying to interfere with Carmen Ohio after several of their losses in Columbus
  • Bo Ryan "deal with it"

Just off the top of my head. There's been more over the top trash talk and dirty play from that team than any others combined so fuck them in their coachless asses. I'm glad they are suffering.

I've said for the last 10 years that Wisconsin was quickly replacing TSUN as my most hated team in the B1G. scUM I laugh at now...dropping 59 on Bucky wasn't enough. I wanted UFM to go for 2 dammit. Fuck Bucky.
