Spain advance 4-3 on PK's. I called it as Bruno Alves was walking up to the spot that he was going to miss. Sure enough, off the crossbar it went.

He was toast from the moment he got called back on his first approach of the spot. With penalties being 99% mental, that's a dumb move. If the guy lost count and was accidentally going early, let him go.

Didn't pick the game again (work blocks the site as 'gambling') but got home in time to watch the 2nd half of overtime and to watch my favorite player seal the win for Spain! Hope they beat Germany/Italy too!

now, I may not know a lot about soccer, but, BUT, I think it's a pretty good idea to have one of the best players in the world be guaranteed to have a PK, no?

Terrible strategy by the Portuguese manager. Was matching Spain almost player for player rather than putting his best 5 out there.

Worst move of the day: taking Meireles (their 2nd/3rd best PK kicker) out in the 108th minute.

I think he needed a breather after all that flopping around on the pitch he did earlier.

With all the flopping, it really did resemble a Classico match between Real and Barca.

It was completed with Pepe (Real Madrid) looking like someone shot him late in the game.

I'll look for an archive of the footage, but I was watching Sky Sports News years and years ago (after England lost on penalties years ago) and they brought in statisticians and business people.

Sky Sports News concluded -- based on stats -- the best shooter should shoot first.

Have no clue how they got to that conclusion.

My coach ALWAYS had that mentality. Don't think he had any stats behind his reasoning. Just wanted to "put the best foot forward" so to speak.

Best shooter goes first. Start off with a goal and put pressure on the rest.

He certainly doesn't go LAST. :shake:
