UEFA Champions League (Official Thread)

First player in Champions League history to score 5 goals in one game. He's already the Champions League record holder for goals in the knockout round with 24 after today. He passed Raul & Shevchenko (18) last game. He will now undoubtedly set a record of 4 consecutive leading scorer titles in the Champions League. He will tie Gerd Muller (Bayern Munich) with 4 overall scoring titles in the Champions League (Formerly European Cup). Lastly, he's only 7 goals (currently at 228 career goals) away from tying C?sar (235 career goals) as Barcelona's all time leading goal scorer and he will do ALL of this at 24 years old as he doesn't turn 25 until June.

APOEL Nicosia & Lyon are into Penalty Kicks right now if any of you are still lingering on here.

History made in Cyprus as APOEL Nicosia advance over Lyon in penalties. They were already the first Cypriot team to ever make the UCL knockout round & now they've made it to the quarter-finals. Good for them, good for Cyprus.

Bayern Munich vs. FC Basel & Inter vs. Marseille 2nd legs about to kick off at 3:45.

FC Basel head into the Allianz with a slight 1-0 lead over the Bavarians. Bayern will look to last weekend's 7-1 demolition of Hoffenheim as a source of inspiration heading into today's showdown. Bayern could be without Mario Gomez (leading scorer), Arjen Robben & Jerome Boateng who all picked up knocks in Saturday's thrashing and will all be game-time decisions.

Marseille head to the Giuseppe Meazza with a 1-0 lead over Inter. Inter were winless in there last nine games heading into last Friday's 2-0 win over Chievo Verona. Marseille haven't fared much better in league play losing there last four league games without even scoring a single goal to drop to 8th place in Ligue 1.

Halftime results:

Bayern Munich 3-0 FC Basel (Bayern Munich up 3-1 on aggregate)
'10 Arjen Robben
'41 Thomas M?ller
'44 Mario Gomez

Inter 0-0 Marseille (Marseille up 1-0 on aggregate)

Bayern Munich are in complete control & it could even be a bigger lead if it weren't for Yann Sommer making some really good saves. Inter have squandered some really good chances, but considering how awful they've been recently, it really isn't surprising they haven't scored yet. Looks like a very tense 45 minutes in Milan upcoming.

Basel played with Napalm & got incinerated. I'd still take Madrid over Bayern personally. Bayern have been very inconsistent all season & I feel like Madrid have shown a real closing of the gap with Barcelona this season (10 Pts ahead in La Liga & a great 2nd half at the Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey).

If you feel like taking a nap, just turn on the Inter-Marseille game on Fox Soccer Channel. Inter were very fortunate to find the equalizer on aggregate and extra time is looming. I'll be sure to catch the inevitable penalty kicks at the end of this dreadful tie.

So much for extra time. Marseille just scored an absolute heartbreaker of a goal in stoppage time. Ouch, Inter

Final Results:

Bayern Munich 7-0 FC Basel (Bayern Munich advance 7-1 on aggregate)
Inter 2-1 Marseille (Marseille advance 2-2 on aggregate with away goals rule)

Basel played way to stretched to compete with Bayern Munich and were punished early & often as they were hit for seven. Four from Mario Gomez, two from Arjen Robben and one from Thomas Muller.

Inter squandered some early chances but made the most of a scrum in the 75th minute to tie the aggregate at 1-1. An added time free kick from the Marseille goalie hit Brandao in the back & as he pushed off Lucio it fell into space where only he could get it & he buried the winning away goal in the 92nd minute. The Marseille goalie made a crucial mistake as he was sent off in the final seconds conceding a meaningless penalty as the game ended when Pazzini scored it. The Marseille goalie, Steve Mandanda will now miss the first leg of the quarterfinals.

Brandao had a nice little push off on Lucio to get to the ball too, but it went uncalled and he buried the winner. Inter were awful across both legs so I can't really say they deserved to progress through.
