Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby/Preakness/Belmont)

Report: Justify failed drug test before Triple Crown

Justify failed a drug test one month before the 2018 Kentucky Derby, and the California Horse Racing Board decided to dismiss the case after the colt went on to win the Triple Crown, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

According to the newspaper, Justify tested positive for scopolamine after winning the Santa Anita Derby -- and qualifying for the Kentucky Derby in the process -- on April 7, 2018. Scopolamine is a banned substance that can enhance performance, according to the Times.

Such a result should have resulted in a disqualification, purse forfeiture and the removal of his Kentucky Derby entry. However, the Times said California regulators waited until April 26, nine days before the Kentucky Derby, to inform Bob Baffert, Justify's Hall of Fame trainer.

Baffert requested a second sample be tested by an independent lab, and it confirmed the results on May 8 -- three days after Justify won the Kentucky Derby.

The racing board then diverted from its normal course of action, according to the Times, which cited emails and internal memorandums it obtained. Rather than filing a complaint and holding a hearing, nothing happened until Aug. 23, four months after the failed test and two months after Justify had completed his Triple Crown run by winning the Belmont Stakes.

The board's executive director, Rick Baedeker, took the unprecedented path of presenting the case directly to the board's commissioners, who voted unanimously to drop the case, according to the Times.

The board reportedly decided that the test results could have come from Justify eating contaminated food. However, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's former drug lab chief, Rick Sams, told the Times that the amount of scopolamine in Justify's system suggested it "has to come from intentional intervention."

2020 Kentucky Derby moved to college football’s opening weekend

GettyImages-679933434.jpg

Louisville is going to have quite the party on their hands in the fall if the (sports) world has recovered from the coronavirus pandemic in time.

In an announcement on Tuesday, the organization responsible for the Kentucky Derby announced that the annual spring staple on NBC is moving to Labor Day weekend this year. Obviously gathering 100,000+ people in one place goes against the recommendations of authorities in light of the COVID-19 outbreak so the decision to move the race to later in the year is pretty unsurprising.

However, that sure sets up an interesting week in the Commonwealth. The 146th running of the Derby was originally set for Saturday, May 2 but will now take place on Saturday, Sept. 5 (the Kentucky Oaks will run the day prior). As many readers of CFTalk will note, that’s the traditional opening weekend in college football and the first full Saturday slate of games in the sport.

New York-bred Tiz the Law wins spectator-less Belmont Stakes

er305554.jpg

Tiz the Law won an unprecedented Belmont Stakes, claiming victory Saturday at the first race of a rejiggered Triple Crown schedule in front of eerily empty grandstands.

The 3-year-old colt from upstate New York charged to the lead turning for home and now can set his sights on the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby and Oct. 3 Preakness. All three legs of this year's Triple Crown schedule were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Belmont, usually the series capper, was initially scheduled for June 6.

Tiz the Law gave New York a hometown champion in its first major sporting event since the coronavirus pandemic seized the area. He's the first New York-bred horse to win the Belmont since Forester in 1882.

"It's a lot smaller crowd, that's for sure,'' said owner Jack Knowlton, who watched from a restaurant patio in the familiar surroundings of Saratoga Springs.

The 4-5 favorite won by four lengths, covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.53. Dr Post finished second and Max Player was third.

The race was shortened from the usual 1½-mile standard to account for competitors' unusual training schedules. Horses kicked off from a starting gate placed atop the backstretch, rather than in front of the grandstands.

Medina Spirit was on the juice?

Medina Spirit's Kentucky Derby win could be invalidated after failed drug test; Bob Baffert suspended
The legendary trainer was suspended by Churchill Downs following the failed test

Medina Spirit, winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby, failed a post-race drug test, trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday. The failed test could invalidate the May 1 victory for Medina Spirit, who gave Baffert his seventh Kentucky Derby victory. Baffert held a press conference on Sunday, saying the horse had 21 picograms of a steroid, betamethasone, in its system, which is more than double the legal allotment for horse racing in Kentucky.

Shortly after the news broke, Baffert was suspended from entering horses by Churchill Downs, the famous track that hosts the Kentucky Derby. The race track also said that Medina Spirit's victory will be invalidated "if the findings are upheld." In that case, second-place finisher Mandaloun would be declared the 2021 Kentucky Derby winner.

In that case, second-place finisher Mandaloun would be declared the 2021 Kentucky Derby winner.

If Mandaloun is declared the winner, this (i.e. pari-mutuel wagering is unlikely to be affected) sucks....

What happens to bets placed on Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit after positive drug test?

Medina Spirit’s Kentucky Derby win is at risk after a positive test for betamethasone, but what about the bets cashed in on the victory?

Even if Medina Spirit is ultimately disqualified – something that can only happen after a second positive test – pari-mutuel wagering is unlikely to be affected.

The last time a Kentucky Derby winner was disqualified for a positive drug test (Dancer’s Image, 1968), the Kentucky Horse Racing commission ordered Forward Pass, the horse that crossed the finish line second in the race, be considered the winner of the 1968 Kentucky Derby, except for pari-mutuel payoffs.

When Bob Baffert*-trained filly Gamine was disqualified from her third-place finish in the 2020 Kentucky Oaks, pari-mutuel wagering was not affected by the ruling.

*Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has been fined and his filly Gamine has been disqualified from a third-place finish in last year’s Kentucky Oaks after a positive test for betamethasone.

Just sayin': Sounds like Baffert is the Jose Canseco of horse racing.
