Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby/Preakness/Belmont)

Triple Crown pushes Justify's breeding rights fee to record $75M

With his Triple Crown victory Saturday, Justify became the most valuable horse in racing history.

Before the Belmont Stakes, the horse's owners, primarily WinStar Farm, China Horse Club & SF Racing, negotiated a deal with Coolmore to sell the horse's breeding rights for $60 million. The Triple Crown was worth an additional $15 million, sources said, making the total deal $75 million.

WinStar's Elliott Walden declined to discuss the deal after Justify's win.

The undefeated horse's value tops the $70 million that Coolmore paid in 2000 for Fusaichi Pegasus, who won five of his seven starts. That figure, through an inflation-adjusted price, would be $104 million.

What makes Justify's accomplishment more remarkable is that the horse became so valuable just 111 days after his first race on Feb. 18. Justify, who became the 13th Triple Crown winner, was purchased as a yearling for $500,000.

While the deal might seem rich, sources said Coolmore would make it up by breeding in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, making the horse capable of breeding at least 250 times in his first year. At an average of $150,000 per live foal, half the deal would be covered in Year 1.

They just told Justify he was going to get to have sex more than 250 times over the next 12 months:

For the first time ever, the winner of the Kentucky Derby was disqualified for interference. I'm no horse racing expert, but this decision seems like quite a stretch.

I told me wife when it happened and #7 went wide that the move (going wide at the turn) might cost them the race. I was referencing the fact that the inside position on the rail was wide open and sure enough another horse filled that void. Never in a million years did I think it might cost them a DQ. The horse that was awarded the victory (not won) was the beneficiary of the wide turn. Without that #7 probably wins by 4-5 lengths rather than the almost lengths. First of all the horse didn't do it on purpose and he didn't impede #20 at all. If I had to be awarded a victory like that it would haunt my the rest of my live knowing that i really didn't win the race but it was awarded to me......

20 got pushed wider than he otherwise would have, making it a longer trip. You just can’t push out 3 spots like that. The nbc announcers were saying the stewards should not overturn because the best horse won. That is not and should not be a consideration.

I agree but by going as wide as he did #7 screwed up and let everyone back into it. No way it is remotely close if he stays on the rail. It is not like the horse impeded on purpose as the rule was probably put into place because a human jockey in the pas actually purposely blocked another horse. This actually hurt both horses and again I wonder who called the infraction. if it was the horse that actually was impended (don't remember the number) or #20. What a shitty way to win....but ahem rules are rules....

The objection was filed by #20. Maybe I have seen too many claim races and nag races in my life, but that move gets you dqed in those races every time. I don’t know why it should be different just because of the rich people and fancy hats.

I watched the race with a saints fan, so that was fun.

It was a foul, no question. (Both the PI and the derby)
