As of Friday morning at 11:50 a.m. EDT with $1,914,218 in the pool, Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Journalism was 3-1 on the tote. Off of his 3-1 morning-line odds, he has been vacillating between 3-1 and 7-2 Friday.

Sandman lengthened slightly to 5-1 leading into midday Friday, still shorter than his 6-1 morning line. Sovereignty, 9-1 off of his 5-1 morning line as of Friday morning, was the only other horse in single-digit odds.

The longest shot in the field as of Friday morning was Florida Derby (G1) third-place finisher Neoequos at 48-1.

Rodríguez was scratched Thursday, while Grande was also taken out Friday morning. Baeza, originally on the also-eligible list, is expected to run.

Baffert had to scratch one horse, must not have responded well enough to the "enhanced treatment". Since his other horse drew the 1 (which I can't see as a coincidence), it looks like he's probably an also-ran this year. Not really sold on Journalism (the horse, everyone knows how I feel about it in general ), just doesn't scream winner to me. Watch out for Bill Mott this year.

I ended up doubling up. Had 18 to win, 18 and 8 boxed exacta and a few $ on my wife's bet on the show. $55 wagered, $108 payout. I don't gamble really but I grew up with my dad at Northfield and scioto and this is basically what we would try to do per race on the best outcome, minimize loss first, double up when you can and throw $5 on exotics

Sovereignty skips Preakness, run at Triple Crown

Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty will not run in the Preakness Stakes and instead will rest before the Belmont Stakes, ending any hopes for a Triple Crown.

Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty will not run in the Preakness Stakes, officials announced Tuesday, ending any chance at a Triple Crown for a seventh consecutive year.

Mott told Preakness officials the plan will be to enter Sovereignty in the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel of the Triple Crown, on June 7 at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. Mott on Sunday morning had foreshadowed skipping the Preakness in the name of long-term interests.

"We want to do what's best for the horse," Mott told reporters at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. "Of course, you always think about a Triple Crown, and that's not something we're not going to think about."

Napoleon Solo wins 151st Preakness Stakes​

The horse, trained by Chad Summers, entered with 7-1 odds.

For all its history and tradition, the Preakness was expected to have a different feel this year. Golden Tempo, the Kentucky Derby winner, and Renegade, the Derby runner-up, were not slated to run the race. This was only the second time in 40 years that the top two Derby finishers had sat out.

The race was also being held at Laurel Park, in Laurel, Maryland, as Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course continues to undergo renovations. A field with no head-and-shoulders favorite? On a new track? Anything could happen.

Napoleon Solo, a horse that entered with 7-1 odds and had finished fifth in his last two races, won the Preakness on Saturday, overtaking the favorite Taj Mahal down the stretch while also holding off another strong contender, Iron Honor.

For Napoleon Solo’s trainer Chad Summers, this was his first Triple Crown win. “To come here with a horse that Mr. Gold allowed me to pick out for $40,000 and get the job done on a stage like this, it’s just unbelievable,” Summers said on the NBC telecast afterward, referring to Al Gold, the horse’s owner.

Iron Honor took second while Chip Honcho finished third.

The second leg of the Triple Crown thinks moving to Memorial Day weekend can draw a better field​

The Preakness Stakes is moving from its traditional date of the third Saturday in May. The race will instead be held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend in 2027. It will be the first time any Triple Crown race has ever been run on a Sunday.

The change was announced on Wednesday by Maryland governor Wes Moore and the Maryland Jockey Club, as they hope to bring a top field back to the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown. The schedule change is in response to the recent increase in trainers opting not to run their horses in the Preakness just two weeks after the Kentucky Derby -- in 2026 there were no horses in the Preakness field that also ran in the Derby.

"We believe the Preakness and the entire Triple Crown series are positioned for growth and great success," Maryland Jockey Club CEO Bill Knauf said, via the AP. "This extra week between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness opens the Preakness to potential participants who use modern training methods."

Since 2022, just 13 out of 95 horses that have run in the Kentucky Derby have been in the field at the Preakness. It's little coincidence that the scheduling shift comes along with a new TV rights extension with NBC to broadcast the Preakness through 2032. The lack of Derby horses in the Preakness field has dampened enthusiasm for the event, as the chase for the Triple Crown remains the biggest draw for casual fans.

However, at least in 2027, there will be a new conflict between the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, which will take place just 13 days after the Preakness. That means trainers will still likely be picking between the Preakness and the Belmont, but given there were no Derby runners in last year's Preakness, the pressure falls on the Belmont Stakes to either adjust or risk having their field diluted.
