Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby/Preakness/Belmont)

Hall of Fame horse trainer Bob Baffert will miss the first two legs of horse racing’s Triple Crown.

The 69-year-old has been suspended from the 147th running of the Preakness Stakes, Mike Hopkins, Executive Director of Maryland Racing Commission, confirmed to CNN Sport on Tuesday.

Baffert had already been prohibited from entering any horse in the Kentucky Derby, the first event of the Triple Crown, set for May 7 at Churchill Downs.

In February, he was suspended by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) for 90 days after Medina Spirit’s victory at the 2021 Kentucky Derby was disqualified. The horse failed a drug test after crossing the finish line first at the Derby.

Baffert appealed the KHRC’s decision, but the Kentucky Court of Appeals denied his motion for emergency relief on April 1. His suspension started April 4.

The legendary trainer will not be allowed to participate at the Preakness due to Maryland’s “reciprocity” statute, according to Hopkins.

The rule states that “an individual whose license is suspended or revoked in another state or country is suspended or revoked in this State” and “denial of a license by the racing commission of another state may be considered as grounds for the denial of a license by the Commission.”

Kentucky Derby 2022: Cyberknife one of five best bets

Instead, bettors should find the long shot they like the most to hit the board and provide a big payout. Here are a few to consider:

No. 14 Barber Road (30-1): One of eight horses listed at 30-1 after the post-draw, Barber Road finished second in the Arkansas Stakes, third in the Rebel Stakes, and second in the Southwest Stakes. He has a chance to be in the mix at a strong number.

No. 16 Cyberknife (20-1): After a pedestrian start to his career, Brad Cox’s Cyberknife took down the Arkansas Derby in April and is seemingly peaking at the exact right time.

No. 1 Mo Donegal (10-1): Drawing the No. 1 spot on a potentially sloppy track is not ideal, but the son of Uncle Mo has the pedigree to compete at this distance. If it’s a fast track, Mo Donegal is live and one to use in exotics with Zandon and Cyberknife.

No. 5 Smile Happy (20-1): After finishing second in back-to-back races as a favorite, Smile Happy’s odds have drifted into a good range for a horse that finished a game second to Zandon in the Blue Grass Stakes down the road at Keeneland.

No. 2 Happy Jack (30-1): If you’re truly playing the “anything can happen in this type of race” angle, you could do worse than adding Happy Jack to your exotics to add some value. Boxing him with Zandon, Cyberknife or Mo Donegal if we get a fast track could add some serious value to your card.

Sonny Leon had six races in Ohio yesterday, got in his car and drove to Louisville to ride Rich Strike after the late scratch. He had never been in a Derby. He's the leading money winner for the last three years at Mahoning Valley, an obscure track at Hollywood Casino in Niles, Ohio. Pretty sure he's probably had his last race there.

This almost has to be fake/scripted. But what an amazing ride as jockey Sonny Leon weaved his way through traffic, and once he got Rich Strike some open turf the horse took home the Roses. Incredible!

It was unreal. I usually don't watch the Derby (not a huge racing fan, but I'll watch the Belmont when there's a triple crown chance), and I actually forgot this was Derby weekend until a friend of mine, who grew up in Louisville and now lives in the West coast, mentioned it to me on the phone the other day. Something drew me towards watching it live today, and I'm glad I did.
