FWIW, Sweat's teammate Mike Yancich committed to PSU (about a week ago, but just went public last night)...

Penn State Lands Trinity LB
TrinityHigh School linebacker MIKE YANCICH, rated by Keystone Recruiting as the No. 11 player in Pennsylvania, made a verbal commitment to PennState tonight at a press conference at the high school.

The 6’2” 220 pound Yancich chose the Nittany Lions over Pitt, West Virginia, MichiganState and Connecticut. Yancich is the second Trinity linebacker to commit to the Big Ten this year, as Yancich’s more heralded teammate Andrew Sweat committed to OhioState a few weeks ago.

But Trinity head coach Ed Dalton had been telling recruiting writers for the past two years that Sweat wasn’t his only top linebacker, and now he has been proven right. Yancich is blessed with excellent speed, strength and athletic ability, and some think his all-around game is even better than that of his teammate.

“He can easily move up by the end of the year,” says Joe Butler of Metro Index. “He’s a horse. He can run like crazy and he’s built like a brick wall.”

Yancich was a WPIAL Class AAA all-Big Seven Conference selection last season. He is PennState’s fourth recruit in the class of 2008, and the third linebacker – all of whom are named Michael. Yancich joins Ohio’s Mike Zordich and Louisiana’s Michael Mauti at linebacker, and BlueMountain offensive lineman Matt Stankiewitch as member’s of PennState’s recruiting class.

PSU missing in battle for local talent
10/12/2007

Make your name known early. Make a good impression. Make someone feel important.

It's called good recruiting.

Seems like you can't walk the sideline at Scranton Memorial Stadium these days without almost accidentally bumping into a big-time college football coach doing some good recruiting of their own.

A few weeks ago, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano choppered in. Last week, it was Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt. Neither was allowed by NCAA rules to talk about why they were there, but it's no coincidence that both showed up for West Scranton games, and that Hubie Graham plays for West Scranton.

Graham is leading the charge, a four-star tight end prospect as rated by Rivals.com who has received more than 20 scholarship offers. But the Lackawanna Football Conference, right now, might have more Division I talent on the field than it ever has.

Graham is a stud, but Pittsburgh also has shown interest in West quarterback Matt McGloin, who threw for 340 yards last week. West offensive lineman Eric Shrive, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound tackle, has received offers from three schools - Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse. And here's guessing two or three more local players will be getting some serious Division I interest before signing day in February.

The point is, Wannstedt and Pittsburgh were hot on Graham's trail long before his senior season began, and they are blatantly putting the same full-court press on Shrive. Just as clearly, Schiano is trying to make the same type of inroads in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

My question: Where is Penn State?

Buckeyes make impact
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
<<p>Mike White takes a look at Ohio State's football recruiting in Western Pennsylvania, and Gateway's load of talent:

It should come as no surprise Ohio State has landed another top player from Western Pennsylvania this week. Looking back at recent recruiting classes, the Buckeyes seem to get a player from the WPIAL almost every year.
Ohio State's most recent recruit from the WPIAL is Gateway junior linebacker Dorian Bell, who made a verbal commitment to the Buckeyes Monday. Last month, Ohio State signed Jeannette senior quarterback Terrelle Pryor, ranked the No. 1 player in the country by some scouting services.
Also from the class of 2008, Ohio State signed Trinity linebacker Andrew Sweat. In 2007, Ohio State signed offensive lineman Evan Blankenship of Center. In 2006, Trinity tight end-offensive lineman Andrew Miller was an Ohio State recruit. In 2004, Ohio State signed two WPIAL players -- Woodland Hills receiver Devon Lyons and Beaver tight end Rory Nicol.

Do you guys consider tOSU the team to beat for Chris Watt's services? I saw this little tidbit and was wondering whether or not it was too late for Penn State to get involved. I know ND, UM, Illinois and others are also after Chris as well.

"In addition to Notre Dame, Watt plans to visit Ohio State and Penn State this summer."

Ten years too late.
seems to be a reoccuring theme with Penn State. They wait to late into the recruiting process to offer kids or don't go after them hard enough. Obviously they can't evaluate talent or hold their own in their own state anymore. :oh::io:

If JoPa wants in on this one... he better get moving. Moving as fast as he was when we saw him sprinting across the field a couple of years ago.

(Anyone else think it is a shame that the band didn't start playing "Across The Field" for Joe's run... umm... as it were?)

Seriously though, as a Buckeye stuck in west suburban Chicagoland (yes, just a burb or two away from CW), I'd love to have him as one of the good guys. He's obviously in great hands and where he lands will, God willing, be best for him. Whoever lands his commit should consider themselves quite lucky. Personally, I'm looking forward to taking my boys to watch him under the Friday Night Lights. I only hope that I'll be able to point him out and say, "See that big guy right there? He's going to be a Buckeye!"

Best wishes to all those involved in this process. XP I really think that it's a cool thing that you're doing. The recruitment process has got to be a crazy experience. I'm sure that the families you've touched appreciate all that you've done for them.

Well we did get 5* PA OT Eric Shrive, and when players are re-evaluated 3* PA OT Mark Arcidiacono is going to be a 4* recruit - kid had nearly 15 offers from the likes of ND, UF, Penn State, USF, WVU, Rutgers. OT is a huge need and we filled it in-state, with two kids who are not afraid to mix it up and are aggressive run blockers. Production matters, and Penn State will be going for a fourth straight 1,000 yard rushing season this decade while cracking 2,000 yards rushing with LJ JR as well. Why we have trouble grabbing a top 10 RB year in and year out I have no clue, but Evan Royster is going to be pretty good.

Doesn't look like an offer is coming from Penn State for Tyron and it doesn't look like a ND offer will be coming either. Kid definitely has a lot of talent though, I wouldn't be at all shocked if you guys were looking at him as a DT. He is athletic & lanky...if he can pack 30-35 pounds on his 6'5 frame he'll probably be a very good one too. I'd rather see Ezell at tOSU than UM - I don't think UM is going to get that much talent for the trenches in the '09 class. It appears many viewed Sean Stanley as their most prominent option and they never even had a chance, Sean visited over 10 campuses but fell in love with Penn State. Once Penn State started loading up on MD players and he talked with LJ it was a wrap. Sean is going to be sick as the successor to Maurice Evans.

If we get MD DE DeOnte Arnett or MD DE Jason Ankrah were going to be even more stacked on the DL...we return 16 deep on the DL for '09 not counting any incoming players from the '09 class and I would be absolutely shocked if 10-12 of them weren't all 4* recruits.

A reoccuring theme? Can't hold their own in their own state anymore? LOL...You've gotten two recruits that have mattered to Penn State in what...10 maybe even 15 years? Terrelle Pryor & Dorian Bell. We did get 5* OT Eric Shrive, and we WILL get 4* PA WR Jaleel Clark & 4* PA LB Dan Mason.

I don't even think Chris has a written offer from Penn State, that's why I thought it was odd that he would visit over the summer. In fact he said he only had a verbal offer from Penn State when he did that chat on the Villanova SCOUT board. A Penn State written offer doesn't need to be the first to get there, it speaks for itself. We are always too busy being focused on MD, VA, DE & PA but it is well worth it.

I guess they did not want Andrew Sweat. All we ask for is educated post if you are going to come in and make a statement. The dam is leaking and until there is a coaching change OSU is picking from the top not the bottom.

Or Mitchum or Nicol...I think the original post meant not only players going to OSU, but also elsewhere. But we are getting the point ePKo...I suggest letting it go. I know you want to defend your team, as any OSU poster would likely do as well if the same was done to us, but the thread will just ended up turning into a pissing match and getting split. I think this thread would be the best thread to go to for discussing this, seeing this is Watt's thread...back to him:

I'm not just talking about TOSU. Many of the top programs in the country are comming into Pennsylvania and getting the top players to go out-of-state and it's not just the rest of the Big Ten schools. It's the Big East, ACC, and SEC etc. Numbers don't lie, in 2006 LeSean McCoy the top player in the state went to Pittsburgh. 2007 Derrick Morgan again the top player in the state of pennsylvania went to georgia tech, tony clemons the number three player, and top WR in the state went to michigan, Pat Bostick number four player and top quarterback went to Pittsburgh, Rob Gronkowski number eight player and top TE in state went to Arizona, 2008 TP number one player in Penn and the world, Jonathan Baldwin number two player and top WR went to pitts burgh, Number three prospect and top OL prospect Lucas Nix went to Pittsburgh, number five player Nick moody went to Florida St, number 6 player Shayne Hale went to Pittsburgh, number 8 player in the state A.J. alexander went to florida state, number 11 prospect chris burns went to Pittsburgh, and this doesnt' even include the class of 2009. Those are all top ten players in the state and are either 4* or 5* guys, since you like stars so much. I really could go on all day epooky, but i think you get what im saying. But i guess you can't say Penn State is really getting beat out for any of these prospects because nobody in considering you guys anymore. It starts at the top with JoPa if you guys ever want to get back to respectability. Until then have fun being a middle of the road Big Ten team, and still calling yourself Linebacker U.:oh::io:
