Buckeyes watching, awaiting bowl fate

Saturday, November 29, 2008 3:02 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

After four months of meetings, practices and games -- nonstop football, hour after hour, day after day -- what did Ohio State defensive tackle Nader Abdallah do just moments after the regular season ended last Saturday?
"I was watching games all last night," Abdallah said Sunday, "and now I'm up in the morning trying to listen to ESPN, see what they're saying about bowls. I'm very interested in what's going to happen."
With a 10-2 record, the Buckeyes are eligible for a Bowl Championship Series at-large spot. They're probably attractive, as well, considering the size of the fan base and potential TV ratings.
But whether they get a BCS bid will largely be determined by the events of today and next weekend. Therefore, like their fans, the Buckeyes are keeping an eye on a number of key games.

As much as I want to see UGA get pasted by Tech today, I guess it's better for us that they win and then get crushed by us in the CapOne. FWIW, it's been raining all night and it is supposed to continue today. I would think that would be to Tech's advantage: solid defense and a good running game.

Georgia's defense...I mean lack of defense...is terrible. I hope Georgia pulls out this win, but it doesn't look like they will. I'd much rather play a top 15 team than one that isn't. How can the SEC be so great, when their 3rd best team is looking like this? I want to play the best team possible, but I still am rooting for Oregon State, just because it'd be cool to see a team other than USC win the Rose Bowl. Plus I like the Oregon State season and story. Granted if they lose, i'll be just as happy, because instead of playing crappy Georgia (yes I said crappy...LSU and Georgia were the two most overrated teams in the country, and Georgia still is), then we can play OU, Texas, or Texas Tech. That'd be awesome. A great challenge for the silver bullets!!! GO BUCKS!!!

1) The Big Ten shares all bowl money

2) The Fiesta Bowl wouldn't payout any more than the Capital One Bowl, as I understand it. The FIRST team gets the big payday in, but the 2nd team from a conference only gets roughly what a team would get from going to the Captial One Bowl.

Though, I'm not an expert, so somebody can correct me if i'm wrong.

Correcting.

As stated elsewhere, the B10 will be sending 7 teams to bowls. No matter what. The Big 10 will not be looking at the difference between the Capitol One Bowl and the BCS because someone from the B10 will go to the Capitol One. If OSU were to go to a BCS game the other B10 teams all move up one game leaving the Motor City Bowl without a B10 team. Googling found out the payout in 2006 to be $750,000. So that would be a difference of about 3.5 million give or take the new payout amount for the conference. I would much rather have 2 Big 10 teams in the BCS all else being equal. And it's not close.

Thanks. Now I'm googling. Just trying to get the facts.
Looks like:
1. Each and every B10 team that goes to a BCS game earns conference approx. $17MM. Correct?
2. CapitalOne Bowl earns conference approx. $4.25MM. Correct?

I haven't, as yet, found any reference to a different/lesser payout for second teams repping a conference in the 5 BCS games...from the proceeds. It may be that the conference internal splits from gross proceeds weighted in favor of the particpant in that bowl game.

CapitalOne looks to be the highest payout outside of BCS.

Close, the only the first team from a conference nets the 17 million the 2nd from any conference nets 4.5 mil.

Alright, thanks.
From gross proceeds, right?
Then who gets, or where does the other $11.5MM go?

May I please ask, If/when you get a chance, would you please reference this determination from somewhere so I can see/understand this. Thanks again!

I know Ntre Ame gets cut every year, on the rest I'm not sure. I believe anything beyond what's committed is split up between the rest of the conferences, but the last part is conjecture.

Going to be an interesting BCS selection show this year. It's hard to imagine the Fiesta picking Boise St. but they are ranked 9th. Will they stay above tOSU through the end of the season?

Both our regular seasons are over and so there is absolutely no reason why we would jump over Boise State. At the same time, I would be very surprised to see the Fiesta or Sugar Bowls selecting Boise State ahead of us. I'm not sure how it will all work out but I wonder if Boise will end up playing in the Orange Bowl against the winner of Va Tech and Boston College?
