tOSU's BCS Bowl possibilities

I could never hope for a non-BCS game over a BCS game. Even if it doesn't fit into my work schedule... That's why the Japanese invented Tivo.
Never...as if the BCS has been around for decades and decades. Fuck the BCS. Since we'd be the 2nd team in the BCS we get pretty much the same money for the Big Ten going to the Citrius Bowl or a BCS bowl. To me...it's all about who we play, and nothing to do with WHAT bowl it is. There are only two bowl games, where I actually care about what bowl it is...and that's the Rose and the NCG. Playing on New Year's Day is pretty sweet too...I love watching Buckeye Football on New Years Day.

I'm not following. Are you suggesting you'd rather play in a Jan 1 Capital One bowl over a Jan 2 Sugar Bowl? Yikes.
I'm suggesting that I don't care what bowl we play in if it isn't the Rose or the NC. It's all about the opponent, not the bowl. I'd rather play Georgia in the crap.com bowl, than play Boston College in the Sugar Bowl. I want to play the best team possible. PERIOD. My dream situation would be somehow (it won't happen) Penn State gets to the NCG via a bunch of upsets (it won't happen) and therefore we go to the Rose Bowl (it won't happen). We didn't get the Rose Bowl, we didn't get the NCG...so therefore, let's just hope to play the best team possible. I don't care if we play in the Motor City Bowl...if it was against a top 10 team, it'd be a sweet game.

I'm going to jump in here and say that I'd love to play USC again, or any worthwhile opponent in the SEC, meaning Georgia or above, or Texas, OK, etc.
But, the BCS, however much we hate it, means a substantially higher payday for the tOSU, that, imo, makes it the (only) better choice, if we have one, given these economic times. No choice to me, take the money, BCS all the way, is what we root for...I don't care who it's against.

1) The Big Ten shares all bowl money

2) The Fiesta Bowl wouldn't payout any more than the Capital One Bowl, as I understand it. The FIRST team gets the big payday in, but the 2nd team from a conference only gets roughly what a team would get from going to the Captial One Bowl.

Though, I'm not an expert, so somebody can correct me if i'm wrong.

Iowa isn't the only program reaping the rewards of its record-setting season.

When the Hawkeyes accepted an invitation to play in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 2, the Big Ten opened its pockets.

The conference is expected to net an extra $4.5 million for sending a second team to a BCS game, in addition to the $13 million collected by Ohio State's berth in the national championship game, sponsored this year by the Fiesta Bowl.

Coupled with the revenue generated by the other five Big Ten teams that have earned postseason bids, the Big Ten will pull down an excess of $32 million, to be divided among league teams and the Big Ten office.

Sue Lister, associate commissioner of the Big Ten, said the payout process can be difficult to understand because of the intricacies of the process.

"The Big Ten shares all revenues, including money made from the NCAA basketball tournament, television contracts, and all other athletics revenues," Lister said. "The revenue sharing for bowl games is not unique."

Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Michigan, and Penn State accepted bids in early December to the Alamo, Music City, Sun, Outback, and Capital One Bowls, respectively, adding $11.1 million dollars to the pot.

Each of the seven Big Ten teams playing in bowl games will receive funds ranging from $1.65 million (Fiesta) to $750,000 (Music City) to cover travel, lodging, and other expenses incurred by the team and support staff.

But by the time an army of players and staff relocates thousands of miles, sets up camp for one week in a high-priced hotel, and pays for transportation, endless food supplies, and facility rental, there is little money left.

With seven conference teams playing in the postseason, the total expenditures exceed $9 million.

But subtract this total from the $32 million total revenue, and the conference still has more than $22 million in its coffers.

The benefits of this complicated system?

Right...so the 2nd Big Ten BCS team only gets about 4.5 million. Not the 17 million. And since going to a BCS game won't add a bowl game for the Big Ten, since all the elegable teams are going to a bowl game no matter if we go to a BCS game or not, then there really wouldn't be any gained money. If we go to the BCS, then there will be a bowl game that would have taken a Big Ten team, that will take another team instead...like the Motor City bowl or something, not sure which one it would be.

Yeah I posted that as a follow-up since it seemed to support your point. I really don't crave a BCS bowl now that the rose is gone... I just want vengeance in January.

I am right there with you. Rose matters. NCG matters. Those are the two bowl games, where it is as much about the bowl itself, as it is the team you are playing. As far as the rest, it's pretty much just about the team you are playing. I mean, I like playing in Jan 1 bowls. That used to be the standard. Jan 1 bowls. Those were the good bowls. The Citrius Bowl is a pretty damn good bowl. It usually has just as good matchups as BCS bowls. Georgia vs. Ohio State would be just as big of a game as most of the BCS matchups, except maybe USC vs Texas and the NCG.

Thanks, guys.
To be clear, assuming PennSt. indeed plays in the Rose:
1. PennSt. as 1st team in earns the $17M for the conference.
2. If we go to BCS game as 2nd team in, we earn $4.5M for B10 coffers
3. If we don't go to BCS game we earn (????) for conference.

God only knows how badly we need the vengeance!

I guess I don't understand the word "assuming". Penn State will definitely go to the Rose Bowl as the Big 10 team. There are no more doubts or ifs. There is no way Penn State could make it to the NCG.

If Ohio State goes to the Capital One Bowl, they get $4.25 mil split 11 ways after expenses.

Alabama loses to Auburn and Florida.
Florida loses to Florida State then beats Alabama.
Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma, sending Texas Tech to BXII title game.
Missouri beats Tech to win BXII.
USC loses to UCLA

Penn State plays Texas in the NCG.

Not saying it will happen, just saying it could happen.
