Sometimes. Other times they got pressure, sometimes still had a rusher in Brewer's face after the rollout, forced a diving throw and he and the WR still made great plays.Their receivers were WIDE open on third down plays. Standing and screaming on third down seemed like we were cheering for VA Tech with all of the success they had.
I get that you feel that way, you apparently aren't alone based upon comments here but the numbers tell a different story. Yes, the defense made some big plays, but they bookended those with atrocious defense and numerous opportunities to get off the field where they simply failed. I see little improvement in the back 7. VT isn't even a particularly good team and yet they torched us on 3rd down. That is a huge indictment if where things stand.8/10 on 3rd Down in the first half
2/7 on 3rd Down in the second half (but there was the PI penalty on 3rd and 7 of their TD drive)

I thought there were several plays where Brewer got off a pass that moved the chains a spli second before someone pasted him.Sometimes. Other times they got pressure, sometimes still had a rusher in Brewer's face after the rollout, forced a diving throw and he and the WR still made great plays.

They didn't even hit 200 yards passing and everyone is acting like that's not good enough? I get if people want to say our defense needs to step up on 3rd down or that we need to make more plays. However this defense (including the secondary) is vastly improved right now.
There were not WIDE open WRs like some of us are stating. We certainly should have played tighter on 3rd down but I felt our guys for the most part were there with the tech players just sometime the other team will make a play or so. Most importantly no big hitters this week the tech offense was forced to sustain drives down the field and because of our inability to get off the field on 3rd down they were able to do it enough.

Our guys presumably are still new to Ash's scheme so I'm hoping that's all this is. I've got to believe that the talent is there to play better defense, just hoping that the scheme we heard about in preseason and our ability to play that scheme actually come together to yield strong results later in the year. Were you at the game? I was. On the 35 yard line in C deck looking right down onto the field. They had several third down plays where the receiver caught the ball with a Buckeye defender at least 2-3 yards away. That is wide fucking open.
What were their passing stats on 3rd down? I could care less about 200 yards passing. I care about the passes on the plays that either get the defense off of the field or kept them on the field.
