Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

Good game OSU, it was a thrill to play you guys in the Shoe and I can't wait until the game in Blacksburg next year. I encourage you all to make the trip down if possible since I think Buckeye fans will at least appreciate the passion and atmosphere that comes to Virginia Tech during football season. We've had some rough years but I like the look of where the team is going.

If it's any consolation, our defense was a nightmare for Alabama last year and held them to ~200 yards and 14 points. If not for two kick return TDs and a pick 6 it would have been a much closer game. I'm glad to see that our offense has turned the corner and is at least capable of making plays and putting up points this year.

Every VT fan I met at the game was a delight to be with. Great conversation and tailgating. I may make the trip down next year. The interesting thing is that is was a shorter drive for the people from Roanoke (6 hours) than it was for me from northern Virginia (7.5 hours) to Columbus.

Just got back home from Columbus and the game. Haven't read anything in this thread, so I'm not sure what others are already saying about what happened. Here are my observations:
  • I hate night games. The Buckeyes are 0-2 now when I see them play at night (USC being the other). There's too much buildup, too much time to kill. I don't buy the whole "night games give me more time to get drunk before the game" thing. If you can't figure out how to get drunk enough before a 12:00 or 3:30 game, maybe alcohol just isn't your thing. The Shoe sure does look pretty at night.
  • I was wrong about the expansion that they made to the South Stands. Looking at it from the closed end it looks like it was built that way from the start. Maybe the renderings were just shit.
  • I went to the game with my wife and a group of four VT fans. They loved the stadium and the whole spectacle. They had a great time and didn't understand why they had always heard that our stadium was a bad place for visiting fans. Before and after the game Buckeye fans were friendlier to them than they were to me and my wife.
  • I thought I read that they had taken steps to improve the cell service at the stadium this year. I could hardly tell a difference from last year. I guess that was a theme from last night. It wouldn't be so bad if you weren't being given more and more reasons to seek a diversion when you're at the game, what with all of the TV timeouts and public address bullshit.
  • I sat right across the aisle from the VT section in C-deck. Perhaps that skews my perspective, but I didn't think our crowd last night was all that great. My throat still hurts from screaming on every defensive play, trying to do my part to support the team and make it tough on the opponent. I feel a sense of entitlement among the crowd.
  • The offensive line is a shambles. It all starts there, and that is a bad unit that is going to cause problems for this team until they improve. I guess that's to be expected on a unit where four out of the five starters are new and the only returning player has changed positions. I was optimistic about the o-line due to Warinner's work with the group he inherited in his first season here. I still don't have reasons to doubt the coach, but I was wrong about how that group would fare to start the season.
  • I think the defense is better than what we saw last season. I think the new philosophy that is being instilled will pay dividends as time goes on. I was never convinced that the problems were all down to scheme though. There was a clear difference in the physicality of Virginia Tech's secondary and the Buckeyes'. Soft play by the players can make the scheme look soft. I think they'll grow into it, but I didn't expect them to suddenly be a Silver Bullet secondary right away. They were good overall, but were poor situationally. They have to do better at getting stops on third down. It seems like they play scared of giving up a big play over the top. I'd trade giving up a few of those on occasion for more third down stops overall.
  • Joey Bosa is a beast. He was the only player out there consistently making things happen.
  • I'm tired of hearing about the wide receivers and h-backs. All of the speed and athleticism in the world doesn't mean a thing if you can't run the right routes, run them precisely, catch the ball, or find space. Stop telling me. Show me. For instance, I keep hearing about how dangerous Dontre Wilson is. I'm not picking on him and he's certainly not the worst culprit from any of the recent losses, but when has he ever looked dangerous on the football field for Ohio State?
  • I've been hesitant to jump on this bandwagon, but I'm ready to really start questioning Tom Herman. He seems like a great practice coach but a below-average game coach. I think he tries to call a game that works better in theory than practice. I think he's passive and reactionary. This is a flawed offense that needs help from the press box. I was disgusted by his comments about his comments that Virginia Tech played a scheme that made it impossible to run. Its not that I think he should have been calling runs up the middle into the teeth of what they were doing, but instead of using it as an excuse why not do more things that take advantage of the gambles they were taking?
  • Poor JT Barrett... He about got killed in the 4th quarter last night. It wasn't all his fault, but he was lost out there at times and looked very much like a freshman.
  • Special teams were a dumpster fire. They put the rest of the team in really bad positions throughout the game. Dropped points and hidden yardage galore.
That's all for now after taking a day to cool off a bit. I'm sure I'll have more after reading some of the threads.

I had a dream that we just kept running the same play over and over and over.

4 of 16 on third down conversions. It sure felt like all of them were 10 yards or more.

I know a lot of quarterbacks have had great games against us recently but last night felt different...his receivers just seemed to catch everything despite decent or better than usual coverage.

#1 running back in the country in Columbus for an official visit...running backs split 13 carries +2 if you consider Dontre.

I travelled to the game from Denver. Sat in c14. Sometimes I wonder if the coaches are watching the same game that I am. Our secondary is a dumpster fire and it looks to me like it is the scheme as much or more than the players. It is the same old soft zone bs that we have seen for the past two seasons. We are afraid to press the wide outs. They start out wide open and stay that way.

I feel for Barrett. He is not ready and it a shame that he has to learn the hard way. He stares down the primary receiver. And the offensive play calling didn't give him a chance. He also didn't see wide open receivers , which was mostly not his fault some he only had a split second before he was snowed under. My God, can't we give him some quick throws to defeat the blitzes.

We are going to lose a few. Maybe things will get easier when we can play the big ten schedule. The mountain west just passed the big ten in my power rankings.

A quick one on the vt fans. Met many and had a good time with them. Except the two douchebags that sat behind me.

Just read every post in this thread. Here are my observations:

@BUCKYLE is the Joey Bosa of BP. He was the MVP last night - the most dangerous and consistent playmaker in this thread. He came in and was ready to crack skulls for the Scarlet and Gray right from the start. Go back and rep all of his posts. Shoutout to him, @osugrad21 @Clarity and anybody else who Bitched Up and Chose Positivity last night.

Anybody in this thread who said they were embarrassed by this game needs to re-evaluate their loyalties. It's one thing to be disappointed. It's one thing to criticize or ask tough questions. It's quite another thing to act so entitled that you're ashamed to be associated with the team when they lose. Some of the most outspoken people in this thread when the Buckeyes were losing were conspicuous in their silence when the Buckeyes came roaring back. It was funny, but a little sad.

Some people seem to think that being a fan is all about partaking in the glory of a victory. Here's a secret that the happiest fans already know: It means more to hold your chin up after a loss than it does to stick your chest out after a win. The Buckeyes may get defeated on the field - if you have any pride don't let that be defeated too.

Wanna know what the best feeling I had all night was last night? It wasn't the team coming out of the tunnel. It wasn't a touchdown, an interception or a strip-sack. It came after the final whistle, standing in front of my C-deck seat next to a section full of celebrating Virginia Tech fans. I sang Carmen Ohio with all the voice I had left. That feeling wasn't the best one of the night because I'm content with losing. It's just that I'd rather be a Buckeye during a loss than win as anything else.
