Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

Several bubbles against the man and some against zone. Bubbles work better than a standard screen vs man. VT ran a screen pass against us when we were blitzing once and we were also in man coverage and I believe it was Grant that played it well and dropped it for a 4 yard loss for this very reason. Man is harder to complete a screen. The bubble vs Man out of a trips set, not every defender can be in press coverage.

After mulling it over, I think our special teams play is what lost us the game more than anything. Those missed kicks and the out of bounds kickoff when we had just tied it up were huge. VTs starting field position was amazing all game, though the offense wasn't exactly helping with that either. I kind of expected our oline to stink it up, and the d to give up long third downs, but the special teams play should have been solid.

I also suspect that VTs offense is going to stink it up for the rest of the year, and we are are going to be raging over many more 3rd and long conversions this season.

Braxton's shoulder is a genius. It saw the holes in the new oline and mcdropsies playing at wide receiver and said "let's just sit this one out". Be stacked and ready for him next year.

I keep seeing this but there is no guarantee whatsoever that Braxton will be able to play next year. Recovery timeline is 9-12 months for his injury.

Well this is the part here where it can go 1 of 2 ways. We can get our stuff together and rally past this and go on to win the rest of our games or drop 1, or we can let this turn into 2011 all over again.

The Buckeyes have just not been the same team since that loss to Michigan State last year in the Championship game. They were a red-hot, top 5 team poised for a spot in the National Championship. Once that balloon got popped, they have just been able to rebound. Its the same deal with what Northwestern is going through (since the loss last year to OSU).

The team has played flat, uninspired, and a bit scared the last 3 games. They got punched in the mouth and are tip-toeing around. The defenders are not firing off the ball the way Buckeye defenders should. Our receivers are nothing that DB's fear. Ohio State is a team that should have players being talked about weekly with good highlights.

Maybe (hopefully) this was the much needed regular season loss that was needed?

To really get into it, they haven't looked quite right since the 2nd half of the Illinois game. It was a slow bleed up to the scUM game and then things got out of control after that.

Honestly one bright side is the defense overall played ok. If we could've just got off the field we would've been lights out. Look we gave up just over 300 total yards and held them under 200 passing that's great improvement. We have to get off the field though or at least force field goals which we couldn't do

Not nearly enough pressure on the QB by the defense. They didn't contain and when he got out of the pocket he completed passes. I think the pass D overall including the defensive line play against the pass was a C at best.

LJB said VT was 10-18 on third down. Many of them 5+ yards to go. There is still much work for Ash to do with back 7. Until we see improvement there, games against decent opponents could be dicey.

Their receivers were WIDE open on third down plays. Standing and screaming on third down seemed like we were cheering for VA Tech with all of the success they had.

Personally I think the defense is making progress. They stepped up a lot in the 2nd half and got off the field on 3rd downs. I thought the D played at the high level we expect in the second half holding VTech to 7 points on a drive that required trickeration and adjustments.
The first half was god awful, especially that TD drive at the end of the half. I count that among the things that lost this game (and there's a lot of those.)

It's still Jekyll and Hyde ... but last year it was all Dr. Jekyll. Now Mr. Hyde comes out to reign terror on the opponent for several extended series at a time... and that is a definite improvement. Still need to see more of it, but for the 2nd game of the year... it's coming along.
