Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

Yes, we got out-coached
but worse, we got out-played

Other than DL, which of the 9 units do you feel won their battle?
If you believe that "It's not the X's and O's, it's the Jimmys and Joes”
we lost 8-1

A 24 yard punt.. missed 2 easy FGs... KO out of bounds... we sucked
We, especially I, need to rethink our "play makers".. cuz they disappeared last night

My rose colored glasses made me filter the issues with:
the middle of the OL
the WRs
the LBs without Shazier
the DBs
VT tore off my glasses and stomped on them
I agree. VT was better at each position except dline. We were exposed in all the areas we thought we might be, and then were exposed in a couple more. When Miller went down I expected 3 losses so I don't guess this is any surprise. But our defense has made very little progress in the time since JT left. Gotta give Ash more time but it's disheartening.

I actually thought the defense looked good when they were able to use their talent. I'm not a fan of zone with the types of athletes we have on defense. IMO we looked good on defense when playing aggressive. When we were passive, especially in the secondary, they converted. Every time.

Offense struggled, mostly because of the line and lack of running game. Play action was WTF worthy. Why? We couldn't run, so why would they fall for play action? Oh they didn't? Let's keep trying anyways. Did we do power I one time? Slants seemed successful when ran. Where was Devin Smith in this gameplan? They were begging us to go deep, and we did, but we did to Corey Smith, who had at least two HUGE drops. One was a TD.

Special teams were a nightmare. Kicking games should be a problem for small schools without the recruiting power that OSU has. We actually even have a history of strong ST play, with a kicker being an NFL team's top draft pick one year (lol, but still). Missing field goals under 45 yards should be a rarity. Maybe I'm expecting too much. But that doesn't even acknowledge the horrible punt that directly resulted in a TD.

A bad game for all except the d-line. JT was not to blame. Ball should have come out faster at times, sure. But he was the watermelon in VaTech's Gallagher skit. For shame.

Grats VT. Well played. The better team and coaching staff won.

VT simply out coached Ohio State last night.

Defense looked better than last year, but still don't understand soft coverage on 3rd and longs giving them the First Down line as a target.

Offense was managed horribly by the coaches. Never once did we throw a power formation in just to keep them guessing. OLine is mediocre, but there are plays to counter that, like slants and quick outs, just didn't see it last night. Dropped passes hurt, especially in the endzone. Missed FGs, bad punts and KOs.

I really didn't follow the team this year like I had in the past during the summer and fall workouts. Reading some of the stuff here on BP, it seems like this team is starting to come together. I don't see it. There are still huge issues along the OL and in the defensive secondary. The O line situation has to do with inexperience. The secondary situation has been a problem for a while.

I believe I said after the last game, I see three or four losses with his team. I still stand by that. I do think this team will get better as the year goes on. I just don't see this team being as great as a lot of people thought they were going to be.

There is a silver lining. The loss is on me fellas! Buckeyes are still undefeated this year in games I watch!! Been w/o power since Friday and a flooded basement...just too much to deal with to get out and watch the game plus I had to work yesterday.

Stayed in the bubble until this morning and read thru most of the game thread...the ups and downs wow! Even in a loss it feels like a win but I didn't actually see it so tifwiw this "feels" like the 2004 season all over again. Lots of questions but in the end it's still a one game season.

We get those weasel bastards in Cbus!!

Fuck m*ch*g*n!

To be honest I feel great. I obviously don't WANT to lose but I personally feel liberated. This is not a top 5, a top 10, or maybe not a top 15 team so there's no way we can bull shit our way into a 4 team playoff by beating MSU then storming through the rest of our shit conference. I'm liberated because at the end of the day our line, our young qb, and our kicking game (well hell our team) just straight up isn't good enough. I now know this season is about rebuilding and tooling up its not about winning championships

We really needed this win, but were in a lose lose situation regardless. We beat Vs Tech and we should've beaten an unranked, average ACC team, but lose and it furthers the nations long standing perception of OSU not winning big games, especially OOC. We simply got manhandled. I feel bad for JT, as his WRs and O line did nothing to help him. All of the talk of these elite prospects, where are they? Braxton being out there would've helped but it further showed how important he was to games like this where no one else was making plays. But one man shouldn't make a team or unit, unfortunately the loss of 3 guys: Miller, Hyde and Shazier left a gashing wound on our team that a band aid like Barrett can't heal by himself. The only player I could say gave it to the Hokies was Mike Thomas. He stepped up major for us, if not for him this game would've been a lot worse

  • Defensive coaches wish they had an easier team than Virginia Tech after preparing for Navy. Having to re-teach the pass defensive, "but that's the way it is".

Mix this in with some of his quotes earlier in the week. I should read into Coach Meyer's quotes a lot more than I do. It's like they knew they weren't going to be prepared. :smash:

Honestly I was impressed with JT Barrett, he made some very nice on the money throws that multiple wide receivers dropped. Considering the play calling, he did absolutely as well as anyone could be expected to.

The wide receivers on the other hand looked terrible, for the most part. It's been a theme for the past few seasons, disappointing considering our history as WR U. I think Zach Smith might not have been ready for the jump from being a grad assistant to WR coach at a school like OSU, but that's not my call and I have no specific knowledge of the situation.

Play calling, on the other hand - absolutely atrocious. No short or even intermediate passes. No slants or bubble screens. Long 7 step drops and play action on every play. Simply no excuses for it.

Our offense really hasn't clicked against a decent Defense since Tressel left. I would like to see some sustained, consistent success marching down the field.

That's not true - the offense DID click against Sparty last year. Look at the yards they put up. In the end of the game, an offensive play didn't work out, but the Big Ten CCG last year was clearly a defensive issue.

Now if you wanted to say the defense hasn't stopped anyone of note since Tressel left, I think you wouldn't find a single person that would disagree with you.

Yup - this year went from trying to hold on with a RS Frosh QB and letting the rest of the pieces come into play to building quality depth for the next few seasons (think 2004). And in taking the 2004 example, the program built the depth and program that year to be in the MNC hunt basically every year from 2005 through 2010 and it likely would have extended, if certain things hadn't happened, into 2011.

I can live with that. Honestly, this was where Ohio State was going to be next year anyway if Braxton was playing this year, so maybe it's a case of soonest begun, soonest done.

This is the type of year a coach earns his paycheck.

The morning after,

I'm sitting back watching what Urban does, we all know he's pissed. does he revert to UF Urban and take over and run offense? Does he make subtle change or does he go with something more demonstrative? If Urban says we need to see more of someone, chef comes to mind,...why doesn't he make that happen?

I think the D is coming along, DBs are young, LB aren't perfect but seem improved from last year, DL is good, will be better with Spence back.

I'm not sure what to make of the O... QB I think JT will be fine. OLine looks like a hot mess, but with 4 new starters I'm not sure what I expected. WR I can't evaluate them, all I know is none are above average right now. RB our deepest position, out side of Samuel none have impressed but that might simply be the oline or the scheme. TE well they are just extra oline men right now, feel bad for this group historically underutilized.

We got our butts kicked last night time to evaluate, make smart changes move on and get better...

Grats to VaTech they were truly the better team.
