Game Thread tOSU @ Virginia Tech, Sep 7 2015 @ 8pm ET, ESPN

Wisconsin (#4 total defense) and Alabama (#12 total defense) had "legit" defenses as well, and Ohio State scored 59 and 42 on them, respectively. Yes, each game had a defensive TD, but that's still a Hell of a lot of offensive production against two defenses that were supposed to be elite.
Not to mention 558 and 537 total yards respectively.

Been to many Blacksburg games including multiple night games and I know just how loud Lane can get. However, you're talking about a team that plays in front of 108k most saturdays and when we play away in the B1G play in front of 80k (MSU), 108k (PSU) and 110k (scum) and then you add in having just played through the playoffs in the super dome in Nola' with a pro Alabama crowd and in Dallas for the NCG (100K) I assure you noise, crowd, and stage will not be a problem for this team.

What I can see happening is the hokies being the team that comes out too fired up, making mistakes, taking penalties such as personal foul late hits, and blowing assignments. If there is one team that needs to worry about the stage and the energy it is with the home school not our buckeyes. Go through and read my posts in this thread I give tech more credit than anyone on this board (particularly the defense) but my message is I'm tired of the Hokie players and fans acting like OSU is talking trash because there hasn't been one shot fired from Columbus, Oh. If saying " you better be grinding because we're grinding" is considered trash talk then clearly tech is reaching for motivation because quite simply they know OSU has far more motivation in this match up than the hokies.

I do not expect 40 points but I wouldn't be shocked either if we were to accomplish it and if we do reach 40+ again I assure you we can do so without the help of special teams or turnovers. We worked Wisconsin/MSU/scUM/Alabama without special teams playing a role and turnovers (all of those defenses finished ahead of tech). Infact if not for 4 TO's in the NCG and horrendous field position against bama' it could've (should've) been a lot worse. We won big inspite of losing the turnover battle and field position battle.

I expect a lower scoring affair with our buckeyes proving too much and contrary to many buckeye fans here I expect our defense to control your offense and to set up great field position due to our punting advantage. I'll stick with 34-24
Agree on every pointe cent the score. I think it ends up more like 28-10 or 31-14.

Just adding again the Buckeyes missed (2) field goals against VT last year and judging by Ohio State's last two games don't think field goal is part of Urban Meyer's vocabulary anymore. Repeating my Oregon before game post ~ No turnovers and the Buckeyes win.

Obviously last year's game was the high point for VT and in their defense, they had a lot of key injuries the rest of the season.

Can they catch lightning in the bottle twice? Rhetorical question. Hopefully the Buckeyes are a little more focused 10,638,201 - 0 than some of the posters in this thread.

Having watched every VT game in full last year (often an extremely painful endeavor), I can assure you that the PPG allowed statistic is heavily skewed. I can't tell you how many times the offense turned the ball over deep in their own territory, put up several consecutive 3 and outs, etc. The defense would do an amazing job of holding the other team to FG attempts, but ultimately they would wear down and give up some points.

Now of course, points on the board count the same no matter where they come from. But make no mistake about it, the defense is legit and carried the team every week.

First of all, every team in this history of sports finds any motivation possible to get hyped up and focused on a big game. Second of all, if you even spend 5 minutes scrolling through this thread the majority of the discussion is based on if OSU will score "only" 30 points, or if they'll still put up 45+ with some starters missing. I can promise you that points will not come easily, and if tOSU actually does break 40 then they will have played one hell of a game and most likely scored a few TDs on D/ST. While I realize that tOSU has come a long way since last September, this time around it's in Blacksburg and I really hope that Urban has them practicing silent counts because they won't be able to hear [Mark May].

Meh, reminds me of hearing about Texas Heat all off-season.
Strangely, Ohio State seems to do better in the away part of their major home-and-away matchups. Not worried about the atmosphere.
The counts got fixed after playing Cult State last year, so not worried about that either. I don't want to take anything away from you guys... but do you really think nobody can draw 65,000+ seats in our conference? Like the crowd noise of 60,000 people is going to be something new to JT, Cardale, or Brax? More than a few schools have 100k stadiums. Even MSU has a bigger stadium... and that was an epic matchup last year.
Besides, Ohio State is used to being everyone's super bowl.

Anyway, not trying to pick a fight... but... "meh". Looking forward to this game all the same. I'd wish you good luck... but I saw what you guys can do with a little luck last year and don't want a repeat of that

Yeah, I added the total and the rushing yardage...probably shouldn't post at 4:30 am right after waking up. Congrats. Your defense still allowed scores on seven drives.

Keep in mind that not only did we play you right after we played Navy, we still had the second greenest OL in the country and Barrett was only in his second start since the middle of his high school year (he also redshirted his first year at Ohio State). Despite at least one dropped TD pass, we still put up 327 yards and 21 points. If you think your defense is going to have the same success as last year, I suggest you ask the defenses of Wisconsin, Alabama, and Oregon.

Trust me, I get it. VT came into Columbus last year and played the game of their lives against a young offense that probably underestimated them. I know enough about Urban Meyer to know there's no shot in hell that will happen again. I've also re-watched the Wiscy/Bama/Oregon games multiple times and that tOSU team on the field at the end of the season was playing near-perfect football. For the record, I've been a lifelong Buckeye fan and couldn't have been more thrilled with how last season turned out. I was there in Glendale for the 2007 NC game, in Columbus for the disaster against Illinois also in 2007, and in West Lafayette for the Purdue game in 2009 so I've been through my share of devastating losses. Last year was redemption in a big way, as all of you know.

I don't really expect the final score of this game to be that close, but I do expect VT's defense to show up and fight like hell. Our offense is absolutely going to struggle but I think we have enough playmakers to put up some points and make it interesting. I also realize that tOSU will not be intimidated by the spotlight or road atmosphere but VT is at least going to have the advantage of the home crowd's energy and noise so that can't be discounted. And hey, it's still August, so a guy can hope, right?

Were you there in Glendale with family members of a starting offensive player?

Are there any [free] VT sites that talk about what they expect from the O this year? I know Shai is out for this game, but I don't know anything about the rest of the squad except for the return of the QB who played out his lucky ass last year.

I too was in Zona for the NC. Ted Gin taking it to the house on the kickoff... the place was rocking. After that, we got whipped up and down the field. Was a tough day to be a Buckeye!

Just a quick ?
What's the general feel about Frank Beamer? No doubt a great coach and has had 13 double digit wins at VTech, been to a bowl game ever year since '93. But never had played for a National Championship. Is that a blemish on his legacy or not really a concern for Hokie fans?

Thanks and look forward to a fun game, football can't get here quick enough!

VT played Florida State for the NC in 1999 and lost 46-29. Have a vivid memory of that game 'cause FSU chased Michael Vick non-stop until he was totally exhausted at the end of the game. VT actually led after 3 quarters, but FSU just had too much talent.

Just watched the navy game. Will watch vt game next. The team at the beginning of last year was slow, didn't tackle well, and the back 7 were almost never in the right position to make a play. Offense didn't have nearly the grit, the line couldn't produce an opening and they seemed afraid to throw downfield most of the time.

One thing I see overlooked for our defense last year was that the VT game was essentially the very first game under the new defensive scheme that Ash implemented. We didn't run it vs navy obviously. I think scheme wise (or more precisely the players executing the scheme) they will look completely different than last year's game. Closer to where they were at the end of the season.
