OSU does do a pretty good job with strategic calls in the transfer portal. So recruiting losses aren't necessarily a closed book, as much as a closed chapter. That's the issue

How has that not been the case forever in CFB and collegiate sports in general? It’s ALWAYS been the haves and have nots. We just happen to root for 1 of the haves. The 12teamCFP has just allowed a few teams like Boise State and SMU and Arizona State to make a cute appearance. But none were ever going to win the NC. And OSU and even ND would’ve curb stomped those teams by multiple TDs.This is all going to go the way of MLB in my opinion. There's going to be the LAs and New Yorks that can just out spend everyone and have the best talent every year. And there's going to be some schools that spend a lot less and have to develop the heck out of their rosters.
Occasionally one of those non spenders is going to hit the jackpot with a couple of players and make a run at it but for the most part, it's going to be the mega rosters in the playoffs every year.
Ohio State has no business ever being in the latter category so they might as well start ponying up and buying the guys they really want every year and be the bleeping Yankees of this thing!
I agree but for the record, Texas was lucky as shit to get past ASU last year. How has that not been the case forever in CFB and collegiate sports in general? It’s ALWAYS been the haves and have nots. Yes, but I expect the class to close with local in state or diamonds in the rough. So there probably won’t be any commits for a while due to further evaluationAre we going to land anyone else or what? Absolutely bizarre cycle. Is this NSD about to be insane?
The "why" is being hidden behind the Oz curtain. And only someone like Bjork or Day can answer that. With the talk a few weeks ago from Bjork after the House said they wouldn't step in, many thought that offers would be increased but it still seems like OSU is one of the only schools still wanting to "follow the rules", when there are essentially none. The NCAA won't and cant enforce a thing and congress says they dont care collegiate sports made their bed. Bjork is finding ways to generate money but is reluctant to spend it. Yet in places like Lubbock and Eugene they're willing to throw a few million at a kid with not a care in the world
Where are you getting your info about underwood? He was literally named the starter. The issue is that it will be very hard to quantify because a kid earning 7 figures as a true frosh will be expected to produce damn near all conference stats from day 1. For instance, the scUM NIL cant be happy that Underwood is starting the year as a backup. And the pressure will only get worse if he's not starting by mid season if not game 3. And in essence, a true frosh QB should be allowed time to learn the playbook and adjust to the speed of the game. But we're setting up these kids to fail because theyre getting paid so much.
Its almost impossible to quantify how much was paid, because everything is a rumor. And Bjork made the biggest blunder by saying OSU had a $20mil roster because that's all talking heads could use as a basis. If he never put that number out, no one would have any base data point to use. He could've even said $50mil and journalists would've ran with it.
At the time it was reported that he was going to be a backup. My fault, you are correct has been named the starter todayWhere are you getting your info about underwood? He was literally named the starter.
I can't see where anyone has actually said this but I think the why in kinda obvious. University presidents, AD's and coaches are worried that big time college sports (football and basketball) brand will become less valuable the more it looks like a minor league for their professional counterparts. When you think about it, when is the brand of AAA baseball ever been considered to be anything close to Major league baseball? That's why they are willing to roll the antitrust dice to implement the House Settlement in hopes of passing antitrust mustard.
Also as ORD has often told us, the presidents would view becoming administrators of minor league sports team is not a core function of their university's mission.
The problem is that more than a few universities are not honoring their commitment to implement the House Settlement or are pushing beyond the limits of the house settlement to test the College Sports Commission's resolve. OSU in not.

I totally agree on your on your first point. The Premier League and the leagues below are a much, much, much better analogy. I just thought baseball would be more relatable for everyone. Also there is no question a franchise that is a perennial Premier League title contender is way more valuable then an English minor league team.Using AAA baseball isn't a good analogy. Different levels of teams in European soccer is more like it I would think. The NFL might be the higher league but there are millions of rabid followers of the lower tier teams.
I don't think the University Presidents are worried about the franchise value being diminished, I think they are looking to keep the money in house and ignoring the very obvious fact that the two missions do not align (Higher Education and Entertainment). Or they are just completely missing the writing on the wall (more likely).
I agree with most of your second point except the last part. I think the university presidents at the Power Four Conferences look at the mess the NCAA has created in Division 1 and they are scared shit-less. Why? It is the money. Sports teams are the lubricant for the largess that the Power Four Members get from governments, their alumni base and their associated business community. Think about it, the $ 22.5M the are paying athletes is peanuts compared what they stand to lose.
Totally agree, I just see it from a different angle. This is why I have been beating the drum that the Universities need to split off this sports entertainment thing some of them have inherited and focus on the business of higher education and research.
It relatively simple to create a league of teams (new co LLC's) that you as say Ohio State, license your own name image and likeness to but keep the two entities legally separate from a risk perspective.
The Ohio State Buckeyes play every Saturday in The 'Shoe just like always. It matters not one bit to the world that Columbus Sports ventures LLC actually owns the team and pays OSU for the rights to use the name, uniforms, logos, stadium etc etc etc
All current problems solved in a short period of time from there
I don't see the Boards and Presidents giving up the control of "sports entertainment" right now.
