2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

The game has changed.
3-4yrs of mediocre on field product still means 3-4yrs of making a 5-6 figure salary. Make the NFL or not, being a collegiate athlete can be a real investment. I'm not saying that every kid who commits/signs to a P5 school doesn't expect to go to the NFL. And tbh, there are a lot of people in East TX and South FL willing to throw their hard earned money at collectives just to say they helped bring in a top recruit, whether he makes the NFL or not.
I won't judge a 17-18 year old for taking the money, plus I don't know what his personal situation is.

That said, the real money is still in the NFL and a top 100 recruit should absolutely be making decisions that provide the best path there. And taking a bag and going to Georgia or Alabama like the guys last year is different than taking a bag at the last minute to go to Miami. You can make 5-6 figures for 3-4 years playing in the Pinstripe Bowl, or you can make 5-6 figures playing for titles.

Either Miami made him a Godfather offer, or his priorities might not actually line up with the programs. Either way, he made the best decision for him and I hope it works out for the best.

Thinking you’ve got something two years old “figured out” should be a little scary itself.
Ohio State's approach to anything new is:

1. Take the Big Ten approach of being too good for [new thing] because change is bad.

2. Realize that approach has put Ohio State at a competitive disadvantage.

3. Decide to embrace [new thing] fully with winning results.

Just off the top of my head in recent memory, we did that with paying assistant coaches, moving to the spread offense, and embracing the pass. It's no surprise we did the same with NIL. I'm just pleasantly surprised it only took 2 years for us to figure it out.

I fully agree with you. BUT, stepping away from Lightfoot for a moment, if a teenager(or say it's your son) were offered a deal at say Tennessee. The deal is for $250,000 for 4yrs, with $100,000 upon signing. And he's also provided a new car from a local dealership, his housing is paid form and I'll leave it at those perks. That's some REAL money for not only the kid, but his family. You've just told a family that not only will their kid not have to pay for his education, but you're paying a kid close $50k after taxes, and he's probably driving a very nice car(say a new Mustang), doesn't pay for housing, and I'm sure most of his food is free even off campus. I can easily see how a kid would choose that, if a program like OSU or Bama offer you $250,000 over 4yrs, but no up front money at signing, and that $250,000 is on a pay scale, where you make more the longer you stay. So your 1st year you may get $35k, 2nd year $50k, 3rd year $70k and 4th year $95k. But the latter 2 programs also provide additional deals through their collectives and the kid now is able to earn an extra $10-20k/yr. They still will have their housing covered, and their car from the local dealership is able to be renewed yearly based on performance.

Now I'm not 100% sure this is how it goes, but from what I've read on various sites, its quite close. But I have no problem being corrected

True but you gotta start somewhere and they have clearly picked themselves up off the mat and not only landing some punches but landed a haymaker in Scott.

When you are knocked out in the first round, that’s about the best you can expect to start the 2nd.

We also have zero idea what went on behind the scenes with Scott or any other kid that has committed. I’m sure this all plays both ways, and for guys like Scott, the program was willing to invest a little more up front. With NIL it’s all about value exchange. It goes both ways — the sellers and the buyers have to arrive at a deal that makes sense or there’s no deal. No deal? No big deal… move on.

I think we will all be smiling soon with some big booms coming our way. Biscuits are almost ready to put in the oven and the sausage gravy will follow shortly after.
We will get some momentum back over July. Scott was a big pickup obviously and not sure what even happened on Lightfoot. If we can somehow land Baker, Stewart and Scott (far from certain, I know), I think we will be more than happy. But July is going to be a battle on many fronts...said this before but two high quality DEs, an elite OT, and another great CB...to me that's the priority and we are on track to do that imo.
