2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Stolen from another forum (from an Alabama poster) and it's 100% accurate.

Doesn't explain why new money and deep pockets are having no effect on moving the BAMAs, Buckeyes, and dawgs, off the top of the hill.

No, it's more like players still want to go where the coolest coaches reside. The ones playing for NCs, getting developed, and getting drafted into the NFL.

We should all get on the same page for what Ohio State is doing in the NIL realm, because we’re still not competing with Miami (FL), TAMU, or Oregon (most prominently) directly.

I think it’s clear Ohio State isn’t throwing out huge dollars up front like the above teams, and it shows when players talk about having interest in Ohio State for months but never make it to campus—those are the kids waiting for the up front offer/payment and never receiving it.

I think they’re laying out a path (the three-year plan Scott mentioned, although I’m sure it’s not just about NIL) with modest initial numbers and then throwing out what guys like JTT are making in year three, which I think very few programs can compete with.

I may have said it before, but I’m an old man now so I’ll repeat myself because I think it’s important to push back on the stupidity of tdfbia complaints and excuses about NIL and what Ohio State is doing.
Yeah, I heard on a podcast that the strategy the coaches at OSU are taking is showing how much that the players can make over their years at OSU. And compare and contrasting that with the schools that would give them up front money but not find them many marketing deals, or networks with fortune 500 companies. So while an incoming frosh at OSU may not make as much as a true frosh at aTm, but in their 3rd I could definitely see the OSU player making more, and having a list of marketing deals with various companies

To piggyback @Bill Lucas , NIL was never going to level the playing field all that much, because the best teams already had a massive headstart being good. And even the schools with massive endowments, they have most of it allocated to research and the academic side and not sports. Hence why we don't see ND, Stanford and scUM throwing money at recruits. And schools like Ok St, Indiana, Arizona don't have the money to give big deals to more than a few players a year

Dylan Stewart, Jayden Jackson, Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, and/or the entire list of scheduled announcements.

July 3 - Marquise Lightfoot
July 6 - Miles Lockhart
July 30 - Aaron Scott
August 5 - KJ Bolden
August 22 - Eddrick Houston
Lots of booms this summer, only appropriate to begin right around the 4th of July.

So with the West commitment and likely Scott commitment coming up, the defensive side of the '24 class is coming along nicely. We have what I would imagine to be 2/3 of our LB class full with Stover and Pierce , and half or more of our DB class with West, McClain and (presumably) Scott. Obviously some more work to be done (particularly on DL obviously) but those are some really nice pieces to start with for sure.

So with that said, here is my best present guess on this class:

QB: Air Noland
RB: James People
RB: Jordan Lyle
RB: SWD (could be listed as an ATH)
WR: Jeremiah Smith
WR: Mylan Graham

WR: Jeremiah McLellan (IN if he's got the greenlight imo)
WR: Elijah Moore (same as McLellan, he would commit if the staff wants him to)

TE: Max LeBlanc
TE: Demarion Witten
OL: Ian Moore
OL: Marc Nave
OL: Armstrong twins

OL: Brandon Baker (not super optimistic, but we have a real shot...Lambert I am thinking is a very low chance)
DE: Eddrick Houston (looking really good at the moment, but kind of a believe it when I see it with a Buford kid)
DE: Marquise Lightfoot (feel good on landing him)
DE: Booker Pickett Jr. (I think we need 3 DE's and the rest on the target list don't seem likely to me...Rushing is a longshot, but we will pursue)
DT: Jayden Jackson (seems like a high chance to land him at the moment)
DT: Justin Scott (pipedream in all reality, just not sure who the other DT will be...I think we need two in this class)

LB: Peyton Pierce
LB: Garrett Stover

LB: Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa (really like where we sit here and would predict him to be in this class)
CB: Bryce West (huge pickup this weekend
CB: Aaron Scott (still very confident he ends up in this class and soon, had a great visit to OSU this weekend)
CB: Miles Lockhart (also pretty high confidence on landing him and we need 3 CB's...other targets here seem very unlikely to me)

S: Jaylen McClain
S: KJ Bolden (reason to have some faith here, but I wouldn't hold my breath...I hope there is a contingency plan)

- Summary: We've gotta land the DE's we have prioritized or some combination of them. At DT, I wish we had more targets with offers, that position but it could be that the staff only sees 1 DT in this class after McDonald, Moore and Smith Jr. last year....kind of doubt that though, I think you want 2 DT's in about every class, position where depth is really important. Need a stud OL to add to what I think is a promising OL class thus far, maybe 2 more total. Pretty darn good start to the class though.
I somehow predicted Scott to the good guys even though it was with a huge spoon of skepticism. But I'm confident that played a huge role in his commitment

Lightfoot drifting away because of Stewart and Houston? or did Miami just hit a home run with their NIL Pitch?
Feels like the latter to me, but that's just me.
Feels like Lightfoot tried to start an NIL bidding war last minute and Ohio State said “no thank you.”

This is just how things are gonna go sometimes now a days.

Can't fault kids for wanting to get money, but in the end I wonder how long the Miami and Texas A&M types can keep succeeding with this strategy if they don't start turning it into real on the field success.. Upfront money is nice, but is it worth 3-4 years of playing for a mediocre on the field product? Especially when you can get better development elsewhere and succeed in college at the same time?

The game has changed.
3-4yrs of mediocre on field product still means 3-4yrs of making a 5-6 figure salary. Make the NFL or not, being a collegiate athlete can be a real investment. I'm not saying that every kid who commits/signs to a P5 school doesn't expect to go to the NFL. And tbh, there are a lot of people in East TX and South FL willing to throw their hard earned money at collectives just to say they helped bring in a top recruit, whether he makes the NFL or not.

Yup, being the high bidder on everything is no way to build a portfolio.
