2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Is there already an indication that OSU won't land a big time 5 star this go around?
I don’t see OSU landing a 5star DT. DE is a different story

Follow up to previous post: if OSU fails to land a 5 star DE this season, he is most likely retiring after this year, correct?
I wouldn’t say retirement, LJsr is still one of the top DL coaches. And if he can figure out a better rotation, as well as figure out who and if the JACK position will be utilized then there’s no reason to worry about LJsr’s job. He has to suceed at more than just recruiting.
But I think he/OSUleads for and will land Eddrick Houston. He’s a freak athletic DL who can play inside as well as outside and dominate. And though they’re not 5star guys, OSU also leads for Marquise Lightfoot and Jayden Jackson who are very good players in their own right. Problem is, there are few realistic DT position that OSU is in on, and that’s what Kirks is. He’d be a project, but at least he’d provide depth. And of course, there will always be the Portal

I definitely know that OSU has some delusional fans(message boards and Twitter tend to bring out some of the worst minority and delusion of fan bases), but my god do fans of has been programs take it up a notch in their delusion.

Ah yes, Carr outperformed Noland according to *checks notes* absolutely no one who was actually at the elite 11 event watching them both in person, but I guess people on ND’s message boards thinks so? That checks out.

The trick to being a Miami insider is to hype up that kids, shockingly, really enjoy official visits to South Beach and receiving money, while heavily downplaying that elite players also really aren’t that interested in going to underperforming programs that lose a lot and don’t even develop players into top draft picks while losing.

When the NCAA was set to expand the number of coaches allowed the plan was for him to soft retire and bring in guys to get trained on the job and eventually replace LJ Sr. That rule remains up in the air and I’m not sure what the current plan is other than maybe hoping the NCAA decides to move forward with that change soon so they can go back to that plan.

He is 71 years old and aging out. It will happen sooner than later, because I don't see him being able to keep up with having to coach then fly all over the country to visit coaches. He is a awesome coach, but everybody's coaching career has to come to an end or slow down.

I think if he fails to land a 5 star this year, it will give him the excuse to retire that he needs, because nobody came because of him.

We shall see.

Yes, he is 71 but being a position coach isn’t as stressful as being the HC. But he’s definitely in the twilight of his career. But he can go out on his own terms. And don’t worry, he’ll land a 5star DL. But the worry about him, imo is the on field coaching adjustments.

That is a really good assessment. LJ is still one of the best DL coaches in the country and still has the energy and motivation to be a great coach for the DL unit, at least at the present moment and likely for another couple years. The problem is recruiting because recruits from the '24 - '26 classes know LJ won't likely be their coach by the time they graduate/declare for the draft. We can still get some great DL recruits because of past success and just being OSU, but uncertainty on a position coach is a tough one to overcome for the elite guys in many instances.

I do think we brought in another DL coach that was supposed to be groomed to replace LJ as he prepared to retire, or at least go part time? Not sure if that happened, but ideally we could get his replacement announced and LJ could primarily focus on helping with the actual coaching and visiting with recruits when they come into Columbus. I think that would be a really good fit for both parties...OSU can introduce the new DL coach of the future to recruits and LJ can still coach and make the transition smooth. Not sure about how that works with NCAA rule as @Buckeye86 pointed out, but hopefully that is an arrangement that could work.

Who doesn't love everything LJSR has done for tOSU. Now is the time for us to full court press his protégé to come on board and there are 3 young fellas that fit the bill (Randall Joyner, Kenny Anunike, Vince O). Do it while he's still here and we should bridge the gap without having a couple bad recruiting years.
OSU is a major program, with a lot of money. They may just choose to get a big well established name, who can come in and make a impact just for who they are and not the tutelage of LJ. I have a feeling that is more likely.

As the folks at Buckeye Talk said, there was alot of buzz about Anunike a couple years ago being the heir to LJ, however, he is still at the same position and still in a lower program, and that they would expect at least some upward movement by now.

I adopted their belief that OSU will most likely go out and get a splashy hire to take over for LJ.

I’m starting to question any of those 3 names. But I think the NCAA’s coaching rule limit will also affect how long LJsr remains. But I agree with @osuvictory1 that OSU will get a splashy hire. And I don’t worry about who Day will hire. But I think it’ll be name we won’t know, similar to Eliano and Walton
