THE HURRY-UP: NOTES ON OHIO STATE TARGETS’ CONVERSATIONS WITH BUCKEYE COACHES AS DIRECT COMMUNICATION WITH 2024 RECRUITS BEGINS

Ohio State coaches and class of 2024 recruits alike kept their phones close all day Thursday.
  • Five-star defensive end Eddrick Houston said Larry Johnson, Nick Murphy and Miguel Patrick have all reached out. All three told him they're excited to communicate more frequently since they can reach out directly now and build a stronger relationship. Houston will also be at the game Saturday and said he's “looking to see what they have to offer.”

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound pass rusher was impressed by what he saw at Ohio Stadium during the Buckeyes’ 21-10 victory over Notre Dame. Houston was impressed by how energized the stadium was, mentioning fans were excited throughout the contest.

“It was great just to see the energy and how electric it is when the Buckeyes play,” Houston told Eleven Warriors. “I saw great things from the different types of schemes they run and how they try to utilize their players up front. (I liked) how they can have stand-up guys and four-point guys and still be able to rush the quarterback.”

Before the game, the sidelines were full of celebrities, ranging from Joe Burrow to Justin Fields to LeBron James. But Houston didn’t get starstruck.

“No sir,” Houston said when asked if he was able to meet any of the celebrities while on his visit. “I was more focused on Ohio State and how they were warming up just to see what they go through when they prepare for the game.”

Houston viewed his visit as a business trip and enjoyed speaking with Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson that weekend.

“He was talking about why he recruited me and different things like that and how I’d fit into their scheme,” Houston said. “I’d fit in as an edge rusher. He really wants me if I choose Ohio State to be the best version of myself and not be like all the others that came through here. He’s going to develop me in the way that he knows best, and that will be good for me. He really told me he liked my leadership and how I’m always there to help the younger players and coach them up. The little things he saw about my character and on the field to the younger kids (impressed him).”

2024 LB, Sammy Brown from GA.
He will be an extremely hard pull from UGA(or the SEC in general), but he’s the real deal. He’s, IMO what many thought Tacket Curtis would be: a hard nosed, lunch pail LB, who hits like a Mack truck, is athletic enough to fly sideline to sideline, and make us all think of Laurintis and Hawk.

“It was really more of a shock than anything,” Brown told Eleven Warriors of receiving an offer from Ohio State. “My brother was a big Ohio State fan growing up, so it was a shock to him too. He was really excited. Ohio State is one of those major schools that you always dream about, even going to just watch a game. It was really cool.”

“I think that the biggest thing was the family feel that Ohio State has,” Brown said of his main takeaway from his visit. “You could just tell that by looking at the alumni that were there. Joe Burrow was there, and he didn’t even finish his college career at Ohio State. I think that shows how much of a family Ohio State is. All those people were there at some point and still feel a family connection.”

Of all the celebrities in attendance that night, Brown, who roots for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was most excited to meet former Ohio State and Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier.

“Growing up, I watched him a lot,” Brown said. “I got a picture with him. It was really cool to meet him.”

While he enjoyed seeing a who’s who cast of characters on the sidelines, Brown was paying close attention to how he’d potentially fit into Ohio State’s revamped scheme under Jim Knowles. Brown said Ohio State is recruiting him primarily as an inside linebacker but praised the scheme for allowing that unit to play freely defensively.

“I was able to focus on those two backers,” Brown said. “The seats are semi-high up, so you’re able to see the play develop and whatnot. I just visualized where I would be (if I came here)."
