2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Local article (i.e. Columbus Dispatch) this AM:

'Pound for pound, it's one of the best': Ohio State's 2022 recruiting full of twists, but still elite

When the letters-of-intent arrive on Wednesday, Ohio State will have assembled another top-5 recruiting class.

That has been the norm since Urban Meyer arrived a decade ago, and Ryan Day has continued the success. Ohio State has 19 commitments heading into the early signing period and hopes to add at least a couple more blue-chippers. The Buckeyes rank fourth in the 247Sports.com composite team rankings behind Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&M.

"Pound for pound, it's one of the best recruiting classes in the country,' said Steve Wiltfong, director of recruiting for 247Sports.

Not that they have anything new; but the Dispatch does have an update on the commitments link:

Seems to me that the joy and even the importance of following recruiting so closely will be diminished going forward. Sure, the majority of verbal commits will sign and that will still be a great indicator of future performance on the field. It’s just less of an indicator than it used to be due to NIL feee agency, the ease and importance of the portal, etc.

What will still matter is on field success and the ability of a school to develop talent and get them to the league.

There are just a lot more distractions and noise that will cloud that for some recruits and it will be best to sift through that. As others have said, landing quality transfers will be more important than ever.

If I was a coach in this environment, I would just double down my focus internally. Be the best on Saturdays and everything will take care of itself.

Yeah I agree, as we go forward it will be interesting to see some stats of the % of 4 and 5 star recruits that finish their college career at a different school than the one that they originally signed with coming out of high school. Most of the top recruits aren't willing to sit on the bench and wait 2 or 3 years for "their turn" anymore. Especially with the amount of NIL money being available, it's a play me now or "I'm outa here" mentality. Getting the quality transfers (especially to fill a definite need) will continue to be bigger factor in a team's success than years past.

And Lord help us with tampering. Cause you know booster's are going to pass word to 4-5 stars sitting on teams benches about how much NIL money they will get to transfer to their school

Here are some thoughts questions as the ink drys on signing day.

Want to also get thoughts of some of the experts on here.

Will we really have to wait until January to find out about Kanu, Abor and Miller. And Hinzman.

I really want Harrison and Sevyn to return.
Lord knows we have room and need.

We need to bang the portal hard.
We could use help in a number of spots.
Problem is I don’t know that we can promise a starting role. That’s why I don’t think we will land the FIU tackle.

But a case could be made for help on the OL, TE, certainly LB and in the secondary.

We need to organize and mobilize our NIL efforts poste haste.
There is no reason with our alumni base and fan base we can’t be near the top of the NIL frontier.

What is the consensus on which coaches are leaving.
I’d be in favor of replacing Stud but the talk of Frye is absurd as he is also OC at UCLA.
Will LJ retire?
Who leaves to make room for Knowles.

I just see it as they're all adults who choose a company. Some choose to stay at that company, and some choose to quit and go to another company. These guys are still all young adults, who have HS classmates who will enter the work force instead of attending college. I don't see this as any different as them having a job. The same distractions have always been there, money, girls, family, etc. Just now, the bagmen are out in the open

The days of quality depth are over..actual teaching weight training will be crucial. Your bench will need to be committed to that role..quality people. People with unrealistically expectations will be playing musical chairs with the portal.

This or… everyone take a deep breath, walk away, and check back in about 3-5 years to see how all this NIL/Portal stuff actually plays out… its total Chaos right now.. but it will settle down and come to some sort of normalization …. which I’d wager we all don’t know what it looks like.

The main issue is the threat of tampering. They need to do something so boosters don't try to buy people on other teams benches that aren't even in the transfer portal. How they solve that I have no clue.
