I won't sugar coat it...

I'M worried about the defense.

We have no commits on defense and Tre Williams from DC (who was 100% CB'd to OSU) just committed to Clemson.

Here's my worry.. that we have the reputation that we are an offensive school like OU that plays no defense.

We will not win without defense and I don't quite know what it will take but we need to make a splash this year.

We have got to get back to top 10-20 defense that we are known for.

Clemson/Alabama cleans up on defense and we need to start doing the same.

What a difference 1 year makes...

Relax friend. We’ll be fine.

I won’t sugar coat it. Your post is hardly surprising.

Relax
For all of the talk of OU playing not defense, they've made 2 straight CFP appeareances, and they're 2019 class includes 4 stars from the following position: CB(2), S(2), DE(3) and the top DE from OK who's a 3 star.
Bama didn't exactly play a murder's row of a schedule, and OU still dropped 34pts on them, not really defensive dominance, and Clemson poured 44pts on them(and could've had over 50 if Dabo wasn't being so nice to his Alma Mater).
And for the talk of the defensive dominance of Clemson, #1, they played in arguably the worst conference in CFB. They were literally the only team with any relevance, and still barely beat Syracuse, Texas A&M and fake USC(spare me on the rivalry game BS, Clemson had 2nd string guys with more talent). They beat a very overrated ND team in the CFP, and honestly OSU would've beaten them just as bad. Clemson is the hottest team in CFB, I laugh to think that you're shocked that they got Williams, did you see what they did to Bama? That's on the minds of the countrys teenagers.
OSU's reputation is as strong as Bama or Clemson, we'll get top kids who want to be Buckeyes, 1 kid(or 5) won't make or break our program. There are a number of guys over the years who were favored to OSU early in the recruiting process and chose someone else, and OSU still had fine seasons(guys like: Richard LeCounte, Bubba Bolden, Darnay Holmes, Dexter Lawrence, Porter Gustin, Josh Sweat, Malik McDowell, etc). We are known for winning games and championships, no one plays elite defense anymore unless your conference sucks or you schedule nobodies. Football is now designed to favor the offense, even being a top 10-20 defense doesn't guarantee you much(hello #1 ranked scUM defense). We need to get back to playing sound, fundamental defense, and known of the cute, complex scheme BS that Schiano wanted to run. Simplify the defense, and let the kids use their athleticism. This is why Bama and Clemson are so good, they set up simplified schemes and let their players make plays in favorable positions. And if certain things don't work, they acknowledge that and change things up. Our problem last year is that Schiano was so stubborn and kept wanting to keep the LBs at the line, even though fans and other opposing coaches saw this weakness and exploited it time and time again. No way if Schiano gets back to fundamental and changes the scheme last year, do we have so many close games, or even lose to Purdue IMO. But you're also dealing with kids who are teenagers and see the new team on top, and want to be a part of that. Remember when OSU was in the NC and got 2 commits in the same night? That's what kids see. Keep winning, and showing them rings and trophies, teenage boys are just like women, show them shiny things and they come running

I agree with 98% of your post with the exception of Clemson running a simple scheme. I have seen Venebals talk about his defense. He has over 30 variations of zone coverages in the secondary, far far far from simple. That is the difference though, Clemson can dial up 30 different coverages, Schiano stuck to two, and ran one most of the time. Made it too predictable and easy for opposing coaches to scheme against.

Completely agree and we hinted at/touched on the subject many times during the 2018 season but never really got down to it.

A good offense is going to hurt a good defense more often than not in modern college football. That is why I believe 100% that Urban Meyer's overall philosophy of lead with the offense is the correct approach and happy to see an offensive minded guy like Day take over.

Obviously you still need to play as fundamentally sound and aggressive of defensive football as you can but fans expecting Tressel era defensive numbers are going to be disappointed(or freaking out, depending on the fan), especially against the good teams.

I think football schemes are like pendulums too, they swing from offense to defense and back etc as each figure out how to stop or beat the other. Right now we are obviously watching an offensive swing. Just like you see defenses evolve from 4-3 to now most are running 3-4's, except we have been a 4-3 team at OSU. The rules seem to favor the offense. However I would argue that PI is now giving the defender so much more than they used to get away with. Just like Olinemen are now allowed to hold much more than decades past. Dlinemen were just destroying Olinmen at one time when they couldn't hold at all, now as long as they keep their hands inside they can grab what ever they get their hands on. DBs seem to be able to bludgeon hack and assault on a regular basis now. IE the Rams lol.
